Gaming Bloodborne (PS4)

How long is the load screen?
Depends, going back to the home area is less then 30 seconds but when you die its 30seconds to a minute usually.. Doesn't bother me all that much as I just go on my phone during that time but I can see why people would be annoyed.

Its not like just levelling up like most games, you have like 7-8 attributes that are all at a different level, and you pick which one to increase.

A bit like Rogue Legacy?

In that there are different things you can choose to upgrade like health, mana, attack, gold gain etc. You use the gold for the upgrades and when you die and restart, you have to spend the coins then or lose between half and all when you re-enter the castle.

You get a certain amount of blood echoes when you kill an enemy, and and as you go through a level you get more and more. To level up you need to go back to the hone area, talk to the lady there and you level up there or spend them on weapons or upgrading weapons. Its not like just levelling up like most games, you have like 7-8 attributes that are all at a different level, and you pick which one to increase. My overall level is about 23 right now, but I mostly work on my strength and skill while leaving some things untouched.

Every time you level up, the amount of souls/echoes it takes to level up goes up. If you die without using your echoes, you have one chance to go and get them back from the spot you died or kill the enemy who picked them up (they're glowing) but if you don't then youre out of luck. There's certain items you can use to go back to the home base and keep all your souls, so if you die on the boss with 15k souls, you sprint in the boss area and teleport out and use then instead of fighting him over and over again as its a big risk to lose them.
How long does it usually take to get back to the hone area? Is it possible for me to fight enemies short way from that area, then come back repeatedly and improve my character?

The more I read about this game the more I like it. There's a big chance that I'll find it extremely annoying, but then there's also a chance that I'll love the challenge and feel extremely satisfied with any progress I can make.

Yeah kind of, never played it but its pretty much like that. You use the currency you gain only at the home area and if you don't use them and die, you go down to 0 (but you have a chance to gain them all back, though that's easier said then done as all the enemies respawn when you die).

Its possible but usually pretty tedious as by the time you get enough souls/echoes you're pretty far in and you don't know when the next lamp will be so most people just use the item to go back with all your echoes. Also running back to it has the chance of you getting killed if you skipped people and then your just out a big amount of souls unless you manage to get them. The time just depends on how far you've gone really.

Item to get back? So it's possible to just teleport to the area where you can use echoes?

Kind of the opposite. You keep your money when you die on Rogue Legacy, when you die in a Souls game you have to get back to where you died pick your souls back up. If you die on the way back you lose everything.

Yeah, though its a consumable so you have to find them first, you can't use it an infinite amount of times. They aren't that rare though and you can buy them if you need more.

Can anyone tell me what the item on the top right of the screen is? The one below your healing vials shaped like a white horn.

Edit: Nevermind, I was being stupid.

Thanks.

It really does sound like the sort of game I could get into. I didn't play Demon's Souls or Dark Souls because the scenery didn't appeal to me that much, it's completely different here - Victorian style, weird looking cowboy zombies, carriages, everything looks in place. I like the look of it so much. I'm probably going to buy it, even if I fail to complete it where's the harm? It's not plot heavy from what I've heard, the main fun comes from difficulty and how it compensates your effort.

I can see why people might find this game annoying then since checkpoints are supposed to be extremely scarce. I can also tell what's going to be most annoying for me too, not the fact that I'd die repeatedly but the fact that inevitably the time will come when I'm in the middle of a chapter and I get a call I need to answer, my girlfriend walks into the room and asks me something or I need to go to the bathroom or something, but cannot pause since the game won't allow me to, and I predictably lose everything because I die. People will hurt when I play it.
Losing a huge stash of souls is what prompted my rage quit and the trade in immediately following with Dark Souls. I was quite a ways in too.

Any indication of this coming to the PS3 in the future?

It won't happen. It's a PS4 exclusive for a reason, to get people to buy the console and boost it's library. It's not impossible I guess, but I highly doubt it.

Gotten up to the first boss and I can already tell this is going to suck me in just like the Souls games. Part of me just wishes they made this Dark Souls 3 though. Seems unnecessarily confusing to have so many identical features and items but use different names.

I'm not at all impressed technically though. The load times get annoying when you want to travel to and fro (meaning double load screens) and the frame rate isn't as smooth as I would have expected for a next gen game.

From software have never been the most proficient technically so the faults don't surprise me.

Just read they going to try and fix it. But that's just stupid on a game you going to die a lot in.

Its definitely annoying, but if we have to put up with it for the improved visuals (especially after the upcoming patch that will improve the framerate to hopefully a constant 30fps) then I'll put up with it. The worst thing would have been if they decided to downgrade the visuals so the loading is a lot faster and it ended up looking not much better than DS2

Its not DS 3 because its made exclusively for Playstation with Sony's help.

Its more like Demon's Souls 2 which was also playstation exclusive and its success led to being able to make a multiplatform game like Dark Souls

Dark Souls 3 will almost certainly be another multiplatform game so nobody will cry over it, but maybe there will be a Bloodborne 2 and PS owners might get double the amount of Soul-like games

I'm starting to get the hang of the game play a little bit now but I still don't really know what's going. I can't get past the central Yharnam checkpoint, any time I get close the mob burning whatever it is they're burning I get killed pretty much immediately.

But basically, I get currency by killing people/monsters and I can take that to the hunters dream to buy things or upgrade my weapons/stats?

Instead of working for the next 3 hours I'm going to read up on this instead.

I think it varies for different users but

Watch some playthroughs of the first part on YouTube. I think that's always a good way to get to grips with a game.

Stand on the ledges and lure people in one by one... Or just sprint to the other side and go through the gate and ignore everyone and if you run far enough they'll stop chasing you

I've got so many games to play and a shit load of other stuff on including fnishing uni in the next 6 weeks that I feel I should really leave buying this for a while. But I feel like I'd be missing out by playing it later on when secrets are discovered and everyone is miles ahead. It's one of those games that talking about as you go through seems to be a big part of the enjoyment.

When do you finish uni mate? It's like 2nd week of May for me :nervous:

Same mate. Exams finish 12th May or something like that. Crazy.

Haven't put any work in at all so I'm pretty fecked.

Just stay out of this thread and do a media blackout.

Better off playing it after you finished Uni. Plus they'd most likely fixed the loading times and other bugs by then.

Ah, i see. I don't have any exams luckily. Just have to hand in my dissertation on 28th April and then a 3000 word assignment first week of May and a 2500 word one on the second week of May. Think i should be able to blitz my dissertation over Easter though so i'm sure i'll be alright.

It's with the Cafe too tho.. I imagine the next month or so will be good fun with loads going through it, finding different things, seeking strategy advice etc.

But aye you're right.

Good luck Swagman. I should have picked modules that were assignments not exams.

Use pebbles to lure people one by one and molotovs if you find yourself in a bad situation. You're basically dead if you're facing more than two enemies at once so if that ever happens, just run away and try and separate them.

Yeah you use your blood currency or whatever it's called to upgrade your stats at the Hunters Dream by talking to the woman there. She doesn't become active immediately though and I can't remember why now. At the start especially, if you have a lot of currency, try spending it as soon as you can instead of dying and losing it all. Once your key stats become better, the game becomes easier.

I've not played the game but read something about needing one insight or something? Which can either be gained from the first boss or by going in the sewers

Yep that's it.

Noooo the weapon (Burial Blade) I wanted to play through with is from the last boss. Why couldnt you make 13 weapons and a different one on the boss? :(

Guess I'll have to run through the game with the same couple of weapons everyone else is using, not very individual

Why's there no pause button? I genuinely don't understand what kind of sadist doesn't put a pause feature in a game.

Sounds like a brutal game.

There are plenty of less hardcore games where you cant pause. Its to drive the action, you just need to find somewhere safe (an area you cleared of enemies for example) or learn to navigate the menus fast. Some people even do it whilst running away from bosses, definitely something you can work around

Say you press the Playstation Home button, does the game still just run in the background?

Would this sort of game be enjoyable to a more casual gamer?

Also I'm seeing a few more weapons pop up on the wikis, 16 mainhand/trick weapons last I saw. So maybe there are more they are taking a while to be found or to do with covenants etc. Happy about that
