I think Fergie's reason for not buying another central defender has alot to do with the emergence of John O'Shea.
In O'Shea Fergie see the perfect partner for Rio. And we still have Wes Brown that could step in as well.
But O'Shea is still a raw talent, he still needs at least a season as the 'introduction' to top flight football.
Now if Fergie got another top class central defender, that would automatically lessen the playing opportunity for O'Shea and Brown.
And what top class central defender would want to sign for us if he would only be playing for a season or two?,

We don't need another bloody centerhalf. We have Rio, Wes and O'Shea, all 23 and under, all tremendous talents. And we have Blanc to complete them this season.

Tony Adams is on a free

thats settled then chaps. blanc and adams the dream partnership for next season. with wes and o'sheedy as backup of course.

With all Manutd's commitments 3 central backs are simply not enough. expecially when Brown has the duty to cover the right back if neccessary.

Judgment on our team

1 silvestre a Wonderful player but i c him more cut for the left back where his speed and technique ARE majorly exploited

2 R Ferdinand currently Manutd best defender. two thumbs up

3 OShea Manutd's future but he needs more experience

4 W Brown a great defender who occasionaly suffer from lapses of concentration. An injury prone too

5 G Neville We cannot afford to pull him from the right ( do you want p neville as a first teamer?!!!)

My conclusion we need another experienced central back to lead us when

1 R Ferdinand get injured
2 Injuries start to spark

IC Ayala as PERFECT. Argentina's captian, with more than 60 caps in his belt and at the best of his years ( 29 yrs). Price? NEXT YEAR FREE

As we were and still are interested in Escude and Burdissu, I think you can forget about us signing centerhalves. Especially ones who will cost big money (in wages if not fees). I'd take my chances with O'Shea's inexperience.

Amir my friend how are you?

Havent you just said that a full back cannot do a central back's job?

In your Insane thinking, then neither Burdisso nor Escude can cover the central back's role

(Joking)

Let us be serious now. You have noticed that I am one of those who believe in youths. But i am also afriad that O Shea would suffer the same backlash that W Brown had suffered last year. Being a first teamer in the Manutd's backline holds in it an enormous responsability and we have seen a countless number of players failing in that task.

That is why I suggested that O Shea anb Brown should be sent in the pitch now as first teamers. With Blanc still at OT ( hes old but can be useful on short spells)Fergie can evaluate OSheas talent and see whether in the long run he is capable to command a first team place.

just to remind you, we only have 3 natural centerbacks in the treble season : Stam, Johnsen, Berg. Gary plays there ocassionally, especially when we play Liverpool that season to counter Owen pace. May only play in the last premiership games.
Centerbacks aren't the position to be mess around with the rotation system. The position needs a great understanding between the players and that comes by playing together continuously.

The last thing we need is another centre back, thats a ridiculous suggestion.OShea has been outstanding so far, probably the best Utd player so far this year,he is only going to get better, and should be played now,he is more than ready, all of this easing him in business is well past its sell by date

Stam, Berg and Johnsen were different. They were three confirmed and experienced defenders used to lead any defense.

Remember that

Stam was a column in the Dutch and Psv Eindoven team

Johnsen was Norwegian's captian with more than 20 caps in his belt

Berg was Blackburn's and Norway's rock at the back
The regular companion of Johnsen with Norway

With Rio, John and Wes things are different. Apart Rio no one has the experience and the influence to permanantely take the reins of our defense.

+ remember that Wes Brown is a very unfortunate player regarding injuries

btw the championship tie against the Olimpiakos had proofed that

1 Blanc's lack of pace is damaging our performances.

2 (Despite having Laurent Blanc )There IS NO Leadership and organisation at the back

3 Despite his talent O Shea needs more experience

4 Rio had improved our defense yet it is still far from reaching Manutd's standards

5 Forlan should be selling hotdogs and not playing football

As you can see both Rio and Wes are injured, so we've got no choice but to play blanc. Any debate on his playing at this time is quite academic.
