Blaise Matuidi

Reminds me of Ramirez for Chelsea. Works extremely hard but not a lot else.

Is Le Parisien reliable?

They're reliable, but we know here in France that Matuidi has a lot of friends in the media and he's trying to renew his contract with PSG recently so I don't really think that he'll come here.

Also the fact that Mino is his agent makes the link stronger, but I don't really think that we should trust this story.

Yeah that's what the article suggested as well, in that Matuidi is unhappy with the previous contract offer he received.

As a squad player I really would appreciate having him here. He has a lot of experience and the body to compete in the PL. As he's kind of similar to Pogba we may would be able to rest him a bit more next season and don't overplay him like this one..

I would much rather have him as a back-up option in CM as Fellaini.

Was used to be an absolute engine and would have helped us alot if we signed him up 1-2 years ago. Personally I always liked him and even though he is supposed to be past his peak he could still do a job for us in the short term. However, needs to lower his wages - otherwise no thanks!!

Players like this are important, though.

They allow others to shine. He could be our version of Fernandinho for two seasons.

A very useful player in tactical battles.

This would be great short term but no more than 15m. If he would play for us I see him in Herrera's role since he is good at chasing down, running a lot and has a great engine. From what I've seen at Psg he used to make a lot of runs forward as well. Although I think Herrera is better technically.

What about Pogba/Matuidi/Herrera? Two hard workers who are good defensively could free up Pogba more. But then again I'd rather have a passer/creative player to run things from deep to replace Carrick.

We need a holding midfielder which he clearly isn't. There is zero chance we'd be buying him this summer.

I think a move is imminent (whether to us or not needs to be seen). He has a year left on his contract and with Rabiot already developing well, it's unlikely that he would stay beyond this summer. Maybe @Downcast or @JPRouve can clarify more

He is 30 so even a move, it will likely be a short term one

I think a move is possible.

What does @BBRBB think? :)

Said in the summer I'd hate to see us sign him and would prefer Fellaini over him. I still stand by that. Hope theres nothing in this.

Agree. Matuidi is not better than Herrera. If we are going to sign someone in the b2b role, I'd prefer Naby Keita.

Sorry, I meant Naby Keita. Major brain fart there. Edited.
:D Keita would be good. Seems like Klopp has the horn for him, and I see why - bundles of energy and can provide a solid goal threat...

I'm sure once we show interest, he'll pick us over Klopp. All that is needed is a phone call from Jose ;). He has 8 goals and 8 assists in Bundesliga which is an excellent return for a CM. With our lack of goal threat, it would be great to have someone like him in our team.

He wanted to leave last summer and recently said he was thinking about an extension offer (with pay cut).

I think PSG can afford to let him go this summer, he's not one of the first names put on the team sheet anymore.

I don't see the point. I'd rather give Pereira a chance.

Everyone I've spoken to that has seen Keita play on a regular basis has said he is nothing special and generally isn't a great player, honestly probably just a work horse or something.

I have to admit my knowledge of him is pretty much based on YouTube videos, stats and other comments. Most on here seem to think he's a great prospect. He does have 8 goals and 8 assists so far in Bundesliga so he must be doing something right.

You could be on to something here (obvious play on the erroneous Mendy mention aside). Marcelo is not going to retain his agility out wide forever, and his stamina + fairly advanced technique level + squat frame could be used in a left sided box-to-box role. A bit like how Tuchel deploys Guerreiro, or the Alaba experiment for Austria/Bayern, or some other wingbacks from the past who excelled in box-to-box midfield positions. Maybe some manager will Schweinsteiger him.

On the topic of Matuidi, the prospect of signing a former high level midfielder is enticing. But I'd rather United signed a younger player to deputize for Ander, and eventually emerge as his successor; or someone who can give the next 5+ peak years to United. There's a sense that Matuidi will decline in the near future (a lot of box-to-box midfielders struggle when their engine declines and they have to rely on technique and tactical appreciation). Plus, we need to deflate Raiola's influence in the squad - the more players he has at United, the more stunts he'll pull, and he'll try to leverage those deals into more deals - which won't always be in the best interest of the club.

I can't see what's the point of splashing money on Matuidi. Yea available cheap but he's already 30 years old, not a world class or top class midfielder and we already have someone who can provide what he offers.

I know this is clichè but He simply isn't what we need. We need a DM who can read the game and bring the the ball forward.
He's not as good as he used to be anyway.

What? He is fantastic although I think he should stay in Leipzig for now. Will probably move to Bayern in 2018 though.

Hey I'm just the messenger I thought he was awesome too, but apparently speaking with frequent Leipzig viewers he isn't anything special.

I'd prefer to keep playing Fellaini than sign Matuidi.
I'm warming towards Bakayoko actually. He looks better every time I see him.
Midfield options: Pogba, Herrera, Bakayoko, Keita, Fellaini (+Carrick).
For the desired 3 man midfield that is plenty.

If he's available for €10-15m, I would be surprised if United aren't in for him. I'm not a huge fan but he would give lots of options in midfield. Left footer, can play in a 2 or 3 and most importantly he is athletic. Currently when Herrera doesn't play the United midfield is slow and pedestrian.
