First up, From team Tuppet it's the lethal Gerd Muller against the mighty Goron Banks.

Muller steps up, looking confident. takes a deep breath and begins his run.
He takes a strong shot to the right left corner but Banks sees right through it and makes a huge save to give his managers a very bright start to this shootout.

Up next, for team Balu/Crappy it's Ronaldo, whose had a fine game and his dramatic 120's minute goal led to this penalties. Can he score this against Cech, who received a lot of criticism throughout the match and wants to prove a point!

Ohh that won't do any good to Cech's confidence! Ronaldo with a cheeky chip to the middle while Cech dives to his right. Brilliant!

0-1 Balu/Crappy.

I think 4-4-2 plays a big role in these matches. It's just too hard to dominate a midfield with that formation.

Didn't seem to stop Sacchi's AC Milan did it :p. Won't exactly agree with your point but it is definitely much harder to shine with a 4-4-2. However, Balu/crappy more or less have the perfect set-up with just about the perfect individuals to pull it off. A great defense marshalled by Scirea and a complete midfield with the likes of Czibor and Nedved more or less the best in those roles. It's the perfect base for Eusebio and Ronaldo imo. It was that front duo and that set-up overall which tipped it in Balu/crappy's favour for me.

Next, it's Di Stefano up against Banks who seems very confident after his first save.

Di Stefano starts his run from 20 meters behind the ball, confusing Banks who doesn't seem to understand what's going on and jumps to the his right before Alfredo even gets to the ball! Di Stefano arrives to the ball and calmly rolls it to the middle, that has to be one of the easiest goals he ever scored.

1-1!

Up steps Duncan Edwards, his match wasn't easy running around Matthaus and Di Stefano and the fatigue seems to hit him hard as he wanders towards the box. The crowd is electrifying and shouting Edwards' name, while Cech just seems everything to go away.

Edwards takes a weak shot to his right, Cech takes a gamble and goes early and takes it! He's delighted!

1-1

Can Boniek give Team Tuppet the lead for the first time in this penalty shootout? He seems very very nervous going towards the ball.

Boniek makes his run, Banks sends one arm to the right side but stays put in the middle, Boniek doesn't buy the show and blasts it in the upper left corner. What a penalty!

2-1 Team Tuppet

Can Masopoust keep Balu and Crappy in the match? He goes forward nervously against Cech who still seems joyful from his previous save kissing his Team Tuppet Emblem.

Masopoust steps up and takes a strong shot to the right, Cech reads it AGAIN and is able to get to the ball and beat it to the post and out! He's going nuts there shouting "I belong with the top 20 keepers in the world" and giving the middle finger to the rival managers.

2-1 Team Tuppet

Can Jairzinho score here? Banks seems very very eager to prove that he's the better keeper as suggested by most of the fans in the stadium.

Jairzinho goes for a strong ball to the right, Banks goes to the right way but can only touch it as the ball is smashed in! It's looking good for Team Tuppet!

3-1 Team Tuppet!

For those who might think I made a mistake with the save, I didn't. I just spice it up so don't worry.

Eusebio with a chance to salvage something for his team. If he doesn't score here it's all over! He steps up confidently feeling he deserved to shoot earlier, mumbling a Portuguese curse to Cech as he steps forward.

Eusebio takes a big breath, he knows there's a lot on his shoulders and he's expected to deliver. He scored a few today but it won't count if he misses.
He begins his run but as he approaches the ball Cech screams "AHHHH!", Eusebio slips and shoots it way way over the stands!

The players are furious! They clearly feel Cech's scream was against the rules and Eusebio should get another penalty. Balu is holding Crappy back as he's going mad almost punching the 4th official. The refs assemble to give this some thought and decide.

The decision? Not legal! Penalty to be replayed.

Eusebio steps up again, goes to the left corner again and Cech reads it AGAIN and makes the save! What a penalty shootout from the keeper! He almost singlehandedly took Team Tuppet to the semis! Heroic display!

Final Score 3-1 Tuppet.

Thanks for the compliments, I enjoy these idiotic made up stories who can be as wild as anything as this is a fantasy draft. Who knew Cech would end up as the big hero despite his lack of sportsmanship.

Congrats @Tuppet . It's a fair result and I honestly don't mind going out against your team, you built a sensational side and I'd love it if you go all the way and win it.

Just one thing:
Just caught up on the Matthaus debate, thats very interesting and I don't really think I would add anything to it factually, as I have no idea whether he subbed himself or not. Now on the quote that I put there saying he is the most German player ever, I was just recalling one of your quotes on Backenbauer -
I think in terms of style, ability, the way he played the game, Matthäus certainly fits the description of the most German player ever. I really specifically singled out that 'will to win' part in your post and I didn't really expect it to get blown up the way it did. I did praise Matthäus as a player a fair bit during the discussion though, I just don't think he stands out as a German in terms of winning mentality. There are quite a few others I'd pick over him for various reasons in that regard. I stand by that, always have been consistent in my opinion about it.

I stand corrected, I added the will to win part as I was thinking what would be the most German thing ever in the context of a football game, and thought it would probably be breaking the heart of all fancy technical sides by sheer determination(Not that they were not technical brilliant themselves). I was thinking of Hungary 54, Dutch in 74 and France in 82 etc. Also I had no idea of his substitution fiasco and he was really the force behind German 90, so thought it seem like an apt description at that time.

wow, why am I getting stick here:lol:

3-0 is a nice round number and as far as I see about as valid as any other scoreline.

My +3 goals vote was merely to negate the most likely WUM GD vote by Akash in other games. I didn't think that this game would have that much GD, though. And so far, i haven't seen ANY game that could have +3 in GD. At least, not in this draft, where teams have all time players distributed almost evenly.

It did the trick on this game, as on few others, the game went down to goal difference.

This went to penalties, and the winner has won in a fair game.

I don't like the idea that we start balancing votes that we consider most likely wum. It kinda makes the whole idea behind the goaldifference votes pointless. I get what you did, Isotope, but we should stop worrying about other people's votes and just click on the goaldifference/result we personally believe is correct. As annoying as it is to get a 3-0 vote against you early in the game, it's legitimate.

Maybe we really should consider hiding the result till the end of the poll to avoid 'balancing votes'. It's similar to the old habbit of people voting for a draw by voting for the team that was losing, which kinda put their own opinion above the ones of others. It wasn't fair back then either. If 6 people think team B deserves to win, 5 people think team A deserves to win and one voter thinks it should be a draw, then team B should be the winner. Instead we often ended up having penalties because the one person who believes it should be a draw got into the position to decide the game the way he/she wanted to.

The way this game played out and the goal difference votes happened to equal it was pretty much the same story again. It's wrong in my opinion and I'd rather have lost on goal different because of Akash's vote in regular time than see it go to penalties again.

That's my take on the whole thing. I guess many will disagree.

I don't like the idea that we start balancing votes that we consider most likely wum. It kinda makes the whole idea behind the goaldifference votes pointless. I get what you did, Isotope, but we should stop worrying about other people's votes and just click on the goaldifference/result we personally believe is correct. No, agree 100% with it and have said the same multiple times before. 'Voting for a draw' simply has to stop.

Agreed that voting for a draw isagainst the spirit of the game. This should apply for late votes though, which I've never done it.

Yes, maybe the votes should be invisible until the poll closes.

If it's technically possible, I don't see why we shouldn't give it a try. Part of the ongoing experimentation with the format, if you will.

As for voting in order to balance the score (rather than voting for what you genuinely feel would be the outcome) - well, it's like any other aspect of deciding the outcome through voting: You can't force people to adhere to some sort of unwritten rule or code. It doesn't work that way. If people want to vote for whoever has the most mustachioed players on the park, they're free to do so - it's part of the game. The voters aren't obliged to explain why they vote as they do, nor can they be as long as we invite anyone to vote (including scan voters and people who potentially just take the piss in one way or another).

 I would definitely give it a shot in some draft that I am not playing in.

We could introduce it as a new decider, to replace the penalty shootouts:

"In the event of a draw, the team with the most 'taches will be declared the winners. In the event of a 'tache draw, the team with the overall grandest 'tache will be declared the winner of the 'tache-off, and thus, by extension, the match. Fake 'taches are allowed as long as they go undetected."

Agreed. The only issue is making subs and changes. It will be difficult to decide when to do it. Which reminds me of my somewhat ambitious idea of playing the game in two halves of 12 hours (or something similar). You could see the half-time score then make a change for the second half and voting starts again and take an aggregate score. The main problem of this is setting up the new 2nd half thread and managers having the time to make the changes.

To be honest, a manager can try to determine that based on the comments that posters make in the thread. It may not provide the full information regarding the direction of the match, but it's still not a bad way to assess the situation. It will also introduce another challenge for the manager: should they really push for a change, or should they stick with what they've got and hope that it would work out in the end?
