Best way to defend Arsenal’s sh*thouse corners? | Or most other corners

Why don’t the opposition just mark them?

Keep 4 players forward and they will have to retreat, will keep the penalty area more free and less congested.

Zonal marking for some reason seems to be the current in vogue thing.

It probably is the only way for United as we have De Ligt strong in the air (or Maguire but usually only one of the 2 plays) and if you have them marking a big threat, they can easily be taken out of the danger zone.
So zonal means you keep your best aerial player(s) in the highest percentage area of the pitch.
But for teams with a few good aerial players, it makes more sense to specifically target their key men.

Our team weren't even giants midweek. Our defence was made up of Timber, Saliba, Kiwior and Zinchenko. 2 of those are under 6 ft, and Kiwior and Saliba aren't exactly known for being aerially dominant.

Rice is tall but he is 1 of the main set pieces takers. Partey is just over 6 feet, and Havertz is tall but you wouldn't say he's an aggressive powerful header of a ball.

Actually just checked. I think Utd were actually taller in defence.

Onana is 1.9m > Raya 1.83m.
Maguire 1.94m > Saliba 1.93m
De Ligt 1.9m > Kiwior 1.89m
Mazraoui 1.83m > Timber 1.79m
Dalot 1.84m > Zinchenko 1.75m.

I just think Utd didn't defend the corners well at all. Teams like Newcastle and Inter showed that they can defend the corners well, and we had guys like Gabriel playing those games.

This.

I find it bafflingly dumb. THey all stand outside of the zones and then the defending team marks the zones with no players in it. Its odd. Like footballers have had so many routines drummed into them they're completely incapable of adapting to anything or using initiative.

Match the attacking team's runs or standing areas and the advantage is gone. Might not be able to defend the situation perfectly but its better than just doing the exact thing the attacking team want you to do over and over.

Also in United's case maybe just, you know, try defending corners in any way at all. Maybe start by having someone take your corners who doesn't hit the first man every single time so you can actually practice defending anything other than heading the ball away at the near post.

Yep

Can someone explain to me the thinking behind the modern trend of bringing everyone back to defend corner?

Every team has at least one pacy shortarse whos crap at heading and defending. Surely they do more good keeping 1-2 opposition players occupied on halfway than clogging up your own box.

And why not stick the no.10 halfway between the box and the halfway line in case the defence can pass rather than hoof it ?

Mark up.

Keeper come out.

pre VAR: Stamp on toes. Pull Shirts. Elbow. Dig knuckles into opponents ribs. Spit etc

Put the man near the corner and force attacking team to put only high balls. And make sure keeper catch it. It could be lot easier in my opinion.

This is what Monaco did, kept 3 upfront.
Over to Everton.

They also barely gave us corners. Had they given us a corner every 6 minutes like United (actual average in the match) I am sure we'd scored.

I'm sure the only corners we got was when Rice was off the park as well, and he's the best deliverer of the set pieces.

We were stupid at times and gave away more than necessary but you were playing for them too. You found a way to threaten us and stuck with it and got your reward.

I believe the best approach is a mixture of man marking and zonal marking or even pure man marking(very risky). If you were to use pure man marking against Arsenal, you would need exceptional focus and concentration to deal with their players. My suggestion is to position 3-4 players at the near post, prioritizing big, physical players to block runners attempting to score. Additionally, some players should track Arsenal’s movements at the far post. One or two players must stay highly focused on those sneaky runners looking to shoot or head the ball.

Monaco’s tactics are particularly intriguing, as they force Arsenal’s big-bodied defenders to drop back and defend, reducing the number of bodies available during corners. However, Arsenal is a very very adaptable team when it comes to corner kick tactics. They are so skilled at making adjustments and improvising effectively.
