Bernard - Brazilian Wonderkid

Arsene seems to be banking on Suarez much like we are banking on Fabregas. Don't think either deals will happen.

Signed for Shakhtar apparently, €25 million... Arruda, how come Porto didn't make their move?

I guess Porto could not match the fee - No doubt Shakthar's offer was in cash because of the Mkhityran deal, where as Porto would of been in clauses and installments.

There's no way we can match Shakthar's offer, both to the player or to the selling club, even with the help of the third-party.

Shakhtar has a good team, CL football, gives him as good a chance to reach the National Squad, etc... With the money difference, he was always going to Shakthar, it's not like they're Anzhi...

Porto is not on the business of paying +20m for players anyway, this would be an exception. I feel sorry this didn't materialize, I think we really needed a player like him. We've lost Hulk and James in two consecutive seasons and have yet to find another productive winger. Unless Iturbe and Kelvin develop very well this season we will be very short on those positions.

Shakhtar are bulding something great. They were already impressive in Champions League last season and won UEFA Cup in 2009, they seem to have a good squad and are financed by an extremely rich man.

Crap call by the 3rd party. Bernard would be much better off in Porto (or even Arsenal) and they'd make more money in the long run. Player is being fecked about.

A couple of months ago I would have agreed with you. They had a good side build around a strong spine consisting of Mkhitaryan, Fernandinho, Willian and Srna. The problem is that three of them are now gone. Especially the first two are absolute pressing mashines, which helped them in the CL with their counter attacking style. They have reinvested the money in a couple of highly talented Brazilian youngsters like Wellington, Fred or the before mentioned Bernard, but I have my doubts if they can recapture their success of their last years CL campaign. They will still run the league with ease, though.

It wasn't the 3rd party fault, the decision is still up to the player and the selling club (as it should be).

Porto is probably to "blame" as well, we just felt that the share of the player we were going to keep (50%) didn't warrant more than 8-9m from our part, i.e., we think that at 25m he's overpriced.

I remember a bygone era when Brazilian players had proper Brazilian names. Bernard indeed. What next? Fred?

Seems a bit odd unless it's 'jam today'. I'm sure Bernard would find it easier to introduce himself to European football and lifestyle at Porto and that would set him up for a 'jam tomorrow' move.

Wasn't there a Norbert?

Wagner Love remains my favourite name.

It's like he was born to be a pornstar.

The fact that there are videos on the net of him baging a Brazilian pornstar named Pamela Butt just makes it better,

There is no such thing as a name that doesn't sound Brazilian. Anything can be a Brazilian name, worldwide famous cities, famous people, objects, random assortment of words, or puns (Alex Sandro - Alecsandro).

I particularly like this fellow, he passed away a few years ago (not sure if I posted it before), police director at Goiás.

Anyone watch this lad regularly? There's talk of him wanting a move. Looking at qualifying highlights he might be one to watch at the World Cup as a super sub. From the little I've seen he looks a tricky little player that could play across the three behind the striker. A decent option for us?

He got in the squad ahead of Lucas Moura i think. Tim Vickery i think called lucas one dimensional, or something to that effect

Klopp wanted him to come to BVB so he can't be that bad. ;) He came on as a sub in some Confed Cup matches and always had one or two really good actions. At Donetsk, he didn't play an awful lot so it's hard to tell if he has developed any further.

One of my favourite players of a national team at present. Scolari doesn't start him though, he uses him off the bench as a impact player. The boy is agile, fast and has an excellent footballing brain as well. For the national team he used his qualities to exploit already tired defences and that is why Scolari plays him only in the last 30 minutes or so in a match.

However, if you want to seek his true class, then look no further than his exploits at Atletico last year, where he proved that he can be much more effective than an impact sub. He played a vital role in Atlético Mineiro's Copa Libertadores (their first ever) triumph last year. He was a starter for that side and was pivotal in their success. This year Atletico have failed to live up to those heights, as they've crashed out of the Libertadores at the first hurdle and are playing poorly in the league. The side still boasts the likes of Ronaldinho and Jo who were also part of last year triumph, but without Bernard, they look a much less fluid outfit.

Personally, I think he is a fantastic footballer and would love it if he came to United, but I don't think there is even a slight chance of that happening.

Answered your own question there. Mata, Kagawa, Januzaj...

I have a feeling he is going to be move after this WC to Europe. He is talented and his price will shoot up after this WC.

Clearly the guy has a very good relationship with Scolari and the manager believes in him. He had a dreadful season, was basically useless for most of the time in Donetsk. But that could well be first year blues. Shakhtar is actually can be called "famous" for developing talent, especially brazilian. But it's not like they hit it off in the first season. Also Lucescu is a great manager, but also a real hard-ass, it takes some time to get adjusted.

But i have to say, from what i've seen of him in 13-14, it's a very big gamble to take him ahead of Lucas Moura.

He already is in Europe, he plays for Shakhtar.
Actually his is on the market probably, there is a lot speculation the guy would not be returning to Ukraine at all. He might go on loan to increase his selling value, because Donetsk will struggle to get what they paid for him and he signed only last year.

Speaking of Shakhtar, little Fernando has always impressed in CL matches. Very similar to Fernandinho in style of play, whom he replaced. Reckon he'll end up at a big club sooner rather than later for big money. One to keep an eye on surely.

Rumour has it he's scared to go back to Ukraine with the turmoil and possible civil war going on there.

Liverpool were linked with him last summer, would be an alternative to Lallana but they would prob want to get him before the World Cup.
