Bernard - Brazilian Wonderkid

So, I didn't see a topic so I created one. Love this kid. Fast, agile, intelligent and a great shot. Plays mostly on the wings at Atletico Mineiro (with Ronaldinho, Jô, Rever), and last year easily outshone them, imo.

Was heavily linked to Dortmund, and I reckon he would do great there. He will be a brilliant winger.

Obligatory Youtube Compilation:

Might be coming on today against Italy, even with Lucas ahead in the pecking order. Fingers crossed.

Looks we need to sign the buck toothed bloke with the pony tail instead.

Damnit, I want a new exciting Brazilian.

Patience...

The funny thing about both the links is that GloboEsporte say that according to L'Equipe whereas L'Equipe say that according to their sources in Brazil. I don't think Arsenal have signed him yet.

:lol:Fair point, I hadn't noticed Globo specifically quoting L'équipe! But I suppose brazilian sources doesn't necessarily mean an article on some other website, and could actually be a proper source. I find L'équipe are usually pretty decent at only declaring these deals when they're fairly certain.

Some ITK Porto fans were pretty convinced he was coming to Porto, I still have some hope, though these guys have been quiet lately.

The trouble for Arsenal is that Bernard's pass is co-owned by an investment bank (BMG) who may not be interested in selling their share to Arsenal, and according to Premiership rules that would prevent the deal. BMG may very well believe they can make more money and faster if he has a stop-gap at Porto. Though Atlético Mineiro seems more interested in selling him to Arsenal, they don't stand to make that much money from his sale either way. I doubt we know the resolution to this stalemate until the second leg of the Libertadores final is played next Wednesday (Mineiro are playing home to overcome a 2-0 loss in the first leg, and I suspect they'll ask to keep him until the World Club Cup in case they win).

Looked like he's good enough to be the best signing any PL team will make this summer from the little bit we saw of him for Brazil. Really impressive.

These kind of transfers are usually highly complex and I would be amazed if Arsenal pull it off. Not to mention the fact that he looks like a really good talent - surely there would be competition for his signature.

Have you seen any more of him, Brwned, than just what we've seen him do in national colours? I trust you more than Youtube.

The only other Bernard I can think of was when McMananammanamamnaman took the piss out of Fowler's middle name during the post-match Sky interview after he got his MOTM award.

Without the descriptive accumen of Brwned I can tell you that Porto fans who follow the Brazilian league closely and who have watched him week in week out (and in Libertadores as well) are extremely enthusiastic about him, to the point that they're sure we "need" to get him even though our squad is pretty balanced already. He really carries a very strong aura already, and helped his team reach the Libertadores final.

Also says something that he's a Brazilian international without ever setting foot on Europe, which is something that doesn't happen often.

Cheers for that. Well if Arsenal don't get him, I hope he goes to Porto instead. It sounds like we don't want another PL club to buy him.

Neymar, Moura and Paulinho from the current national team were all internationals before setting foot in Europe too right?

And they're all great players. It's happening more often now. Brazilian league is getting stronger, and benefitting from the economic growth in the country. They can now demand proper fees for their talents. The past generation of players came to europe commanding fees rarely above 5m or so.

Would certainly be a coup for Arsenal, I have not seen much of him regularly but he definitely has something about him. Would like to see Wenger work with him as he certainly knows how to groom the youth so to speak...

Looks a good player. Is this the new expensive signing Arsenal are linked with, we're told they're signing and then never happens? Watch this space

Thats taking it a bit too far IMO.

Dortmund was interested in him for quite some time (they were not ready to pay the wanted 25Mil €, though), so I took a closer look at him outside his appearances with the national team. I (re)watched around a dozen games in the league and copa and his strengths become clear quite fast. In the technical department, be it passing, shooting or close control he is on a really advanced level for his age. He also has good pace.

However, there is one concern I always had about him joining Dortmund. His physical attributes. This may be an overused argument about "little wizards", but in Bernard´s case it holds some truth. He somewhere between 162 and 165 cm tall and while small height does not say that much (Liverpool´s Cazorla is a good example for that), he is at the same time a true feather weight. The boy does not weigh more than 57 or 58 kg. Consequently, I have seen a lot of scenes, where he simply got bullied off the ball. If he has space and can use his pace then he is deadly, but I don´t think he is suited for more physical leagues like the Bundesliga and especially the PL, yet.

I would personally advise him to join Porto in the near future, at least for a period of transition until he is (physically) ready for one of the top leagues.

Nah, unfortunately not. I'm planning on catching a couple of his games in the Copa Libertadores because he really was that impressive in those cameos for Brazil. Made the same sort of impact that Lucas made v Scotland but he did it against better teams in a more competitive environment. Plus he showed the sort of awareness and vision that Lucas just doesn't have to the same degree. Obviously he doesn't have quite the same searing pace but he's got a lovely burst of acceleration all the same. I'd say he's similar enough to Oxlade-Chamberlain in style and role but he's got that extra bit of genius on top. For a Brazilian attacking midfielder he had really pin-point delivery from wide positions which was perhaps the most impressive thing. Not in the sense that he's an expert crosser or anythig but he just picked out great balls from difficult positions pretty much every time. Dribbling, passing, vision, awareness etc. are the kind of thing you expect from these players but very few have a genuine end product from those kind of areas. That's just me getting carried away on the back of very little info. in truth and I thought Ganso would've been tearing up the Serie A by now so I wouldn't pay much attention to my excitement here, but everyone in the Confederations Cup was instantly impressed too.

I do think Ekeke could be right on this one though. Hope so anyway.

Thanks a lot for that. I know you can't say for certain, but you have given me some insight that I didn't have before. Thanks for taking the time.

Supposedly Spurs pulled out because they were told he'd cost £21 million. Considering Arsenal are supposed to be loosening the purse strings and with the bids for Suarez, I could see this one being more likely than some of those in the past like Mata. But with Arsenal's record of rumoured expensive targets you never know. Would be interesting if its true that Spurs wouldnt pay it and Arsenal pay it instead

Fixed that for you. :)

It happens all the time. Setting foot in Eastern Europe is a death sentence for a place in the Brazilian squad.

Yeah, I acknowledged above that it happens more often now, but a few years ago it was certainly the case that the almost all Brazilian internationals were playing in Europe. And yes, Eastern Europe is a death sentence for any player, not just Brazilians - except for Hulk, who keeps getting caps despite weak performances in the NT. Probably the reason why the likes of Shakthar are frowned upon by Bernard in comparison with Porto.

7 seconds in to youtube video 57kg weight, no way could he handle a cold windy rough Wednesday at the Britannia!

I have decided we must hijack Arsenal's bid. Here are some reasons why:

- I like the name Bernard
- He crossed the ball quite well once during the Confeds Cup and generally impressed me in the three minutes or so I saw of him
- It would really annoy Arsenal fans

Hijacking our bids seem to be quite fashionable of late. I foresee no issues.

Could someone draft a bid letter? £20m and a rasher of bacon should do it.

Well I'm off out to get a United shirt with Bernard on the back anyway, just in case.

Bootiful.

Replace the name Bernard with Fabregas and all those things will still hold true.

Nah, not so keen on 'Fabregas' as a name - 'Bernard' is much better. Plus, I am on record as saying that Fabregas is a little bitch and this remains true unless and until he signs for us.
