Dimitar Berbatov's move from Tottenham to United is closer to completion
Manchester United are expected to sign Dimitar Berbatov before the midnight transfer deadline, with the Premier League champions likely to satisfy Tottenham's demands for a British record fee by structuring a performance-related deal that could see it rise to £30 million.

It has also been suggested that United forward Fraizer Campbell could go to Tottenham as part of the Berbatov deal, though Sir Alex Ferguson would be reluctant to lose another striker after selling Louis Saha to Everton.

Berbatov was conspicuous by his absence from the Tottenham squad that drew 1-1 with Chelsea and manager Juande Ramos admitted he had no idea of the Bulgarian's whereabouts.

Ramos is still hoping to sign Andrei Arshavin from Zenit St Petersburg and Manchester City's Vedran Corluka and, while he admitted that it was possible for Berbatov to play for Tottenham again, he appears increasingly resigned to losing the 27-year-old. "I don't know where he was –he just wasn't in the right state to play," he said. "If Berbatov is in the squad he may play again; if not, he won't. But we need to focus on the football. We never blamed Berbatov for the last two results because he didn't play. It was only the players on the pitch who deserve the credit for the performance against Chelsea. Let's hope this can ignite our season."

Tottenham, who are also understood to be trying to complete deals for Sergio Garcia and Diego Milito from Real Zaragoza, completed the signing of Roman Pavlyuchenko from Spartak Moscow on Saturday and Ramos said that the Russia forward would provide much needed support to Darren Bent.

"Bent has had to work very hard up front on his own and we've not had any options," said Ramos. "Pavlyuchenko will bring a lot of quality to the side. We hope that he will settle in quickly."

Ramos said that Tottenham had shown Chelsea too much respect and were possibly "overawed" in the first half, but had deserved their point.

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari also declared himself happy with a draw, yet felt his players had used too many long balls during the second half. "We have to work more with the ball," he said.

The possible deals concerning Berbatov and Robinho, who Chelsea are trying to prise from Real Madrid, are the most eagerly awaited ahead of the closure of the transfer window , although a flurry of other signings will be completed.

Scolari even admitted that he rejected an approach from Arsenal earlier in the summer for Salomon Kalou. "Arsene Wenger wanted Kalou as a centre-forward – a No 9 and Arsene is an intelligent man," he said. "Before he wanted Kalou, not now. We started some negotiations about some players. You don't know which player I wanted but now you know which player they wanted. I said, 'No.' I don't sell Kalou."

It is understood that Chelsea had once been interested in Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor.

Even if big-money deals involving Berbatov and Robinho are completed, it is predicted that the overall transfer spend by Premier League clubs will be down on last year.

It's strange but I don't think Serbian and Polish are that much alike, while what I see above is basically a text written in Polish. Not only can I understand every word, but it also makes perfect sense. Are you sure it's Serbian?

That's definitely not Serbian, they don't have those ls with the line through. Only place I've seen that is in Poland.

Dimitar Berbatov is expected to conclude one of the summer's longest running saga's by signing for Manchester United ahead of the midnight transfer deadline.

The Bulgaria international has made no secret of his desire to leave Tottenham and United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants the 27-year-old in his squad.

However, the deal has been halted by Spurs' refusal to bend on a £30million fee and their annoyance at United's pursuit of the former Bayer Leverkusen player.

For their part, United do not want to go beyond their own £25million valuation and have laughed off repeated attempts by Tottenham to hold them to ransom, not least by pushing interest from Barcelona, which was always sketchy at best.

The Old Trafford outfit have been tailing other targets, just in case the Berbatov deal did not go through. But now it seems their focus is solely on the sleek forward, who would provide the bulk and finesse required now injury-prone Louis Saha has left for Everton.

A deal would make sense for all parties. Aside from Berbatov getting the move he craves, the Champions League winners would get a player their early-season performances suggests they need, while Tottenham would get the troublesome star off their books.

Berbatov has won few friends at White Hart Lane for the way he has appeared to sulk during the last few weeks of the charade.

Once again he was deemed not to be in the right frame of mind to play in yesterday's draw at Chelsea.

Confirmation Spurs have signed Roman Pavlyuchenko from Spartak Moscow means the London outfit have the extra forward they wanted, while on-going pursuits of Vedran Corluka from Manchester City, plus Sergio Garcia and Diego Milito from Real Zaragoza, could see them committed to more spending, so Berbatov's departure would bring in funds to help balance the books.

Although no-one is prepared to say exactly if and how talks with United are progressing, it is thought contact was made in Monaco around the European draws and Super Cup encounter between the Red Devils and Zenit St Petersburg.

Certainly more optimistic opinions are coming from Old Trafford than they have for most of the summer, although the club remain cautious given the speed with which the whole deal must be processed once agreement is reached.

So what's new?.Some of you need to get some fresh air.

What do you do if you're Man Utd this morning? You've got authority from Glazer to spend up to £28M, you've got the legal team to draw up all the paper work and be on standby for any last minute changes, you've got Gill on hand to sign off, you've got Ferguson on hand to make a call on any player swap options. You tell yourself you would like to do the deal but you don't have to do it. You wait.

Berbatov to beat deadline

DIMITAR Berbatov is likely to be a United player by midnight tonight to end the drawn out saga.

It is 62 days since the summer transfer window officially opened and the Reds have had the 27-year-old Bulgarian striker on top of their list from day one.

Indeed Sir Alex Ferguson had hoped to snap up Berbatov from Tottenham in the last window in January but was turned down.

Spurs' £30m valuation and United's initial £19m bid has now been bridged and the player was expected in Manchester today to undergo a medical.

Once the medics give the green light all the i's and t's will be dotted and crossed on a four-year Old Trafford contract and the protracted switch will finally be pushed through before the transfer window closes tonight.

Berbatov wasn't at Stamford Bridge yesterday for Tottenham's 1-1 draw with Chelsea and coach Gus Poyet, when asked after the game if the forward had made his last appearance for the club, said: "You will know tomorrow."

Loggerheads

The White Hart Lane club have been at loggerheads with United over the way the Reds have chased their target.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy reported United to the Premier League over their conduct in mid-July.

However, Old Trafford chief executive David Gill met with Spurs officials in Monaco last week.

United were in the Principality for the Champions League draw and the Super Cup and Tottenham were also on the French Riviera for the UEFA Cup draw.

The two parties appear to have smoothed over their differences and with Spurs having finally nailed down the £14m signing of Spartak Moscow forward Roman Pavlyuchenko it paved the way for Berbatov to make the `dream' move he's been hankering after.

Sufficient

Tottenham, though, were not convinced a Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent forward line would be sufficient and were still chasing last minute targets.

Berbatov and United will now be sweating on any last minute hitches scuppering the deal.

If the transfer goes through, as expected, Berbatov could be set for a baptism of fire with a potential United debut coming at Anfield in the heavyweight showdown with Liverpool on September 13 when the European Champions and title winners are next in action.

He could come face-to-face with his ex-White Hart Lane front partner Robbie Keane. The pair helped Spurs to last season's Carling Cup and the Irishman moved to Anfield for £18m this summer.

United's reserve team striker Fraizer Campbell, who made his Premier League debut for the Reds on the opening day of the season, was reported to be a £7m makeweight in the deal.

But Hull City were hoping that wouldn't be the case and Berbatov's arrival at Old Trafford would open the door for them to secure Campbell.

The Tigers, who had the 20-year-old Yorkshireman on loan last season, are believed to have made a £7m bid and manager Phil Brown says: "Hopefully we'll get the thumbs up and be able to move on Fraizer."

So have anyone spotted Berba on his way to Manchester yet? :D hehe

He will sign, I feel so confident about that.
