Berbatov

Spurs fans in wannabe shocker.

Face it lilies, you're our feeder club and your chairman hasn't a clue what he's doing.

Well said Redlambs, I like how they think they keep getting better when actually the opposite is happening

Fergie: “Berbatov On His Way? No Idea!” Manutdblogger: “Pull The Other One!”

August 28, 2008

Much of the ill-feeling generated by the Dimitar Berbatov transfer saga this summer revolved around one key incident just prior to United’s pre-season trip to South Africa.
Ferguson, you will recall, gave an interview to a Norwegian fanzine shortly before United departed, in which he allegedly mentioned Dimitar Berbatov by name as United’s number one transfer target.
The Norwegian site ran the story and sure it enough it was splashed across the red tops’ online pages by morning.
Cue Daniel Levy fury.
The Spurs chairman riled by the impending loss of Robbie Keane and the pursuit of Berbatov, took it upon himself to despatch his dossier to the FA citing the misdemeanours of certain clubs - particularly United.
The cornerstone of Levy’s criticisms, the intended piece of key, damning evidence if you like, was the quote attributed to Ferguson about United’s plan to sign Berbatov.
Now, as you probably recall, there was only one problem with that line of attack - Fergie flatly denied ever having made those comments.
Steinar Madsen, the webmaster of the Norweign fan site explained the misunderstanding to the Aftonposten newspaper:
“A feather has become 35 hens here. It might seem like we are to blame for what has happened. We are to the blame in the sense how the interview was presented. Ferguson didn’t mention the name Berbatov when he was interviewed by us. I would call it a misunderstanding. It was tricky conditions for the interview. As journalists, you have probably experienced this yourself, how it is to listen to the tape afterwards.”
Whether or not that was a piece of generous ass-covering by the clever Norwegian or genuinely an example of setting the record straight, is a matter of speculation.
Either way, Levy’s case appeared to be instantly weakened and the FA declared the dossier inconclusive.
Levy may well have been left will egg on his face by that turn of events and that partly explains his indignation and the desire to put one over on United, but Ferguson learned an important lesson too.
That lesson was that if United were to get anything from the Berbatov pursuit they had to tread as cautiously as possible with Spurs when speaking to the media, and had to reveal as little as possible even when there were developments - hence the succession of blandishments from Ferguson since then.
Whether or not this ‘blanking’ policy makes any difference to the media’s insatiable appetite for the tiniest crumbs of novelty in this story, is moot. Like a bored child on a long car journey, the press boys just can’t stop asking: “Are we there yet?”, even though they’ve been answered a dozen times already.
It’s with that knowledge in mind that we should probably interpret Ferguson’s latest pronouncements on the Berbatov issue:
“I’m less optimistic so we’ll carry on. I’ve no idea what’s going on. It’s very hard to get communication with some people in life.”
Doubtless, communication between the clubs is less than cordial, but we’d be surprised if Ferguson didn’t know precisely what is happening with the negotiations - he simply doesn’t want the press to know - yet.

i hope that means he's quietly confident and doesn't want to ruffle feathers rather than him trying to play down expectations

So, simple question now...there's not long to go in the transfer window, and from all the reports, Fergie isn't confident, Spurs don't want to sell without first securing Arshavin or someone else - the question is, are we going to get Berbatov now?

Personally, I'm not very confident at all - Spurs continuing to play hard ball, and our seeming regard to not want to pay 30m, seems to be the stumbling blocks. I just think we've taken all summer and we're only this far through negotiations, so what on earth do we expect to happen in 2-3 days at the end of the window?

What say you?

If we don't sign Berbatov, someone on here will suffer for it.

I say get the Donger back and play him with manucho.:o

Honestly I could careless if he comes now or not. This team was good enough to win the double last year and it is a little improved. Chelsea will be a challenge but if BerbaHunteZema comes or not they are the biggest threat.

The chelsea fan in the pub tonight was a smug little urchin, telling me with robinho and the rest in their squad theyll be the team winning the lot.
try as i might i couldnt convince him otherwise.
If we had berbatov however it wouldve been easier to wipe the smile off his cnut face.

(What with bosingwa, deco and robinho now at chelsea, they have easily the strongest squad in the world!)

I'm choosing to view Dong's release as a sign that SAF knows he can let one top class striker go, as he has another on the way in.

Spurs appear to have backed themselves into a corner. If they don't sell then he stays, generally complaining and trying his best to engineer a move at Christmas. Having a player like that can damage morale at a club - not to mention the obvious problem that unhappy and problematic players at a club command a much lower fee.

Spurs have made a mistake in over valuing Berbatov from the start. If he were only 22 then a fee in the region of the £35 million they were asking for would be fair. Why not let him go earlier in the summer - they could have replaced him and had a settled squad before the season started.

It will be interesting to see if Big Phil can keep them all happy though. That's a hell of a lot of talent in the midfield. Who the feck sits? Fat Frank? Deco? Cole? Essien? Mikel? Ballack? Robinho? Malouda? Kalou? At least they shipped off SWP.

EDIT: Berbafeckov

I know, it's hopeless. We're doomed. It must be such a good time to be a Chelsea fan.

The truth of the matter is we've made it to transfer deadline without needing him and IF we are going to pay what they want, Sir Alex will do it at the very last minute to piss the Lilyshites off.

Agree with that tactic? No.

Laugh when it happens? You bet I fecking will.

We havent score many so far though and dropped points against newcastle.

I was really impressed with our play against pompey though and still think we play the best football in europe.
Basically i think we'll be alright without berbatov.
But with him, I know we will be.
