Berbatov

I think 10,000 United fans are trying to get into that Spurs site judging by the length of time it took to come up on my computer!

I really don't see this happening.

I have an idea, how bout we send a contingent of caftards to spurs training ground and ask him directly.

Exactly.
Newcastle look like they're in trouble right now with all their best players out.
If we can't beat them without the Berb then we're in trouble too.

Very true. We should have enough in the tank to swipe the Barcodes aside comfortably.

It would be nice to get Berbatov acclimatised to all things Manchester United A.S.A.P. though.

My concern is that the longer this drags on, the greater the chance of Barcelona or even the cnuts at Madrid coming in with an offer.....

Barcelona already have 4 striker Messi, Eto, Bojan and Henry.

And they can sell none of the ones that could possibly depart as both Henry and Eto'o are already cup-tied, having played against Wisla Krakow on Wednesday. They are really out of question when it comes to signing Berbatov.

Why is he always running past Modric in training photos? Modric is clearly shit-sell him Ramos.

Ramos bullish, Fergie quiet on Berbatov transfer -reports
17:26 Fri 15 Aug 2008 - Alex Bivol

Less than 24 hours before the start of the Premier League season, the possible transfer of Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov away from White Hart Lane continues to dominate newspaper column inches in Britain. While Tottenham manager Juande Ramos is putting on a brave face over the chances of keeping his team's biggest start, his Manchester United counterpart Alex Ferguson, who has pursued the Bulgarian for more than a year now, has gone quiet on the issue.

“Dimitar is a great player and is carrying himself superbly through this and we want him to stay,” Ramos said on August 14, as quoted by The Times. “I have no preference one way or another. You have to go with what is happening.” In private, however, the Spaniard is resigned to losing the striker, the daily said.

Having sold Jermaine Defoe in January and Robbie Keane in July, losing Berbatov would leave Darren Bent as the only proven Premiership striker on Tottenham's books, even though the club has signed a plethora of attacking midfield players this summer, with Luka Modric, Giovanni dos Santos and David Bentley all making the switch to London. Nevertheless, Berbatov's sale will not hinge on the signing of a replacement first, according to Ramos.

"It is nothing to panic about," he said. "We work without rest to look for players and we have always known the deadline day is August 31. We are working calmly in the background on one or two things."

Ramos added a little barb at United, saying that Tottenham prefered "to work with as much discretion as we can." Club officials have been reported to be so incensed with British media trumpeting the transfer as a nearly-done earlier this week, that they upped their asking price to 32 million pounds, although United "expect to complete a deal for approximately 28 million pounds sooner rather than later," The Times said.

Ferguson, at a news conference on August 15 during which he announced that Wayne Rooney would be in the squad for United's match against Newcastle, refused to comment on the drawn-out transfer saga. "I have nothing to say, absolutely nothing at all," he said, as quoted by the Independent.

Even if they lose Berbatov, Spurs can still challenge England's Big Four for a Champions League place, according to The Guardian's interpretation of Ramos' words, but if their valuation of the Bulgarian is not met, the White Hart Lane brass would rather sell the player to a club outside England.

Barcelona, who have failed in their efforts to land Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor earlier this summer, are believed to be closely tracking the negotiations, the Daily Telegraph said. "Barcelona are watching the situation very closely and we know they would love to sign Dimitar," the paper quoted a White Hart Lane insider as saying.

Plus Gudjohnsen, but that wouldn't stop them, if they really wanted Berba - which I doubt. I think there are only 2 viable options. Either he stays with the Spurs and sulks the whole season (or until January) and we go through this saga again or we get him some time next week.

Barcelona were probably interested in Berbatov, as well as Adebayor, when they were trying to offload Eto'o. He was for sale but nobody matched their asking price, I don't even think anyone except Kuruvchi was seriously interested in him. Now that they've kept him they don't need Adebayor nor Berbatov at all. I explain again.

Wayne Rooney in contention but Dimitar Berbatov deal still on ice
Wayne Rooney trains with Manchester United

Manchester United are facing up to frustration in their attempt to beat today's deadline to sign Dimitar Berbatov in time for the player to make his debut against Newcastle United on Sunday, but Wayne Rooney has informed Sir Alex Ferguson that he is fit and available for selection, having made an encouraging recovery from the mystery virus that laid him low after their pre-season trip to Nigeria.

Rooney contracted the virus while in Abuja, where United played a lucrative exhibition match against Portsmouth on July 27, and was unable to train for ten days on the squad's return to Manchester. Ferguson suggested that Rooney had little chance of being fit for the start of the new Barclays Premier League season, but the word from United's Carrington training ground is that the forward has trained fully this week and undertaken additional sessions every afternoon to build up his fitness.

As is his way, Rooney has been pleading with Ferguson to select him against Newcastle at Old Trafford, but the United manager will consult his medical staff before making a final decision. Rooney is firmly expected to be named in the 18-man squad, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Louis Saha injured, but he must wait to learn whether he will join Carlos Tévez in the starting line-up or be named among the substitutes.

United had hoped to sign Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur this week, with a view to playing him against Newcastle if necessary, but Premier League rules stipulate that all the relevant paperwork must be processed and filed to the league's headquarters by noon on Friday for a transferred player to be eligible to represent his new club that weekend. In cases such as this, where international clearance from the Bulgarian FA would be required, that deadline can be extended to 5pm at the league's discretion.

As it is, the paperwork stage remains some way off, with United still to break Tottenham's resistance over a transfer fee and Barcelona lurking in the background.

Tottenham, who were irked this week by premature reports that a deal had been struck, were eager to make clear that they have not received a formal bid for Berbatov since rejecting United's opening £20.5 million offer last month, but negotiations are continuing through intermediaries, including Emil Dantchev, the player's agent. Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, wants £32 million for Berbatov, but United expect to complete a deal for approximately £28 million sooner rather than later.

Berbatov trained with his Tottenham team-mates yesterday and Juande Ramos, the head coach, has refused to rule out the forward playing away to Middlesbrough tomorrow. “I will wait until the final training session and see how he is,” Ramos said. “He's an excellent professional and he has been getting on with things in training.”

Privately, Ramos is resigned to losing Berbatov, but publicly he sounded a different note. “Dimitar is a great player and is carrying himself superbly through this and we want him to stay,” Ramos said yesterday. “I have no preference one way or another. You have to go with what is happening.”

With Robbie Keane having joined Liverpool for £20.3 million, Berbatov's departure would leave Darren Bent as the only senior centre forward at White Hart Lane, but Ramos said: “It is nothing to panic about. We work without rest to look for players and we have always known the deadline day is August 31. We are working calmly in the background on one or two things. We prefer to work with as much discretion as we can.”

Edwin van der Sar, the United goalkeeper, has followed Ryan Giggs by indicating that this season could be his last as a player. The goalkeeper, who will face competition this season from Ben Foster and Tomasz Kuszczak, will wait until December, by which time he will be 38, to decide whether to retire when his contract expires next June.

Berbatov's 'sulking' will see Spurs give Liverpool a run for their money.

He's a professional footaballer, a good one. But none the less professional.

Publicly, Juande Ramos is a human. Privately, he's a horse.

Hopefully Fergie has other options. Should have gone for another striker probably, just after the Euros

Well Henry is already tied in Europe. Eto'o too. Santa Cruz seems unlikely since they turned down a bid for him already. Huntelaar, maybe..

I'm not sure, but isn't Crespo a free agent at the moment? Not that I want him, but the worst-case scenario could be that he's the only viable option in the end.

Crespo is at Inter Milan and I couldn't see him coming anyway.

Have patience with Berbatov. Just because it won't happen today, doesn't mean it won't happen eventually.

The Arshavin deal is probably holding it up.
