Bent to Villa for £18m

Lets also not forget that for the last 2 Summers Fergie has tried to sign an established centre forward, if this happened it'd be a green light for Welbeck to move (in my opinion).

How mich did Villa go to Barcelona for? My mate is telling me it was £27m, surely that cannot be right?

Villa are gunna be immense on FIFA11 now :nervous:

I don't see why Sunderland being in the market for a striker suddenly means we're going to sell Welbeck. Whether or not Sunderland have a vacancy up front their will obviously be other clubs willing to sign a talented young English striker who has proven he can score goals in the Premier League.

Whether or not Welbeck is let go depends on Fergie's transfer plans this summer, the ins and outs at Villa and Sunderland are irrelevant.

Besides, even if we're only discussing Sunderland's options up front, why is everyone forgetting about Frazier Campbell?

True... but it wouldn't surprise me if we had to sell before we could buy.

If we were going to sell I doubt it would be Welbeck. I imagine it would be more likely to be players like PIG (£4m ish?), Wes (£2m?), Gibson (5m?) , De Laet (£2m?), Ajose (£2m?), Diouf (£4m?) and Stewart (£2m).

Most of those players we could arguably do without and have a decent reputation and would allow us to bring in a decent amount of money. I think any money we'd get for Welbeck would be used buying a player for much the same money, on higher wages and who may not even have more potential.

Done deal.

Deets known?

I'd wager a guess and say deets = details.

Anyway, here's the scoop.

VILLA SIGN DARREN BENT IN RECORD DEAL

Aston Villa have smashed their transfer record in signing Sunderland striker Darren Bent in a deal which could eventually be worth £24million.

Villa are splashing out an initial £18million for Bent but additional add-ons mean the final figure could rise by another £6million.

The England player is in line to make his debut in Saturday evening's home Barclays Premier League clash with Manchester City.

The four-and-a-half year deal was completed on Tuesday after Bent agreed personal terms and passed a medical.

Bent's capture surpasses Villa's previous transfer record of £12million which was paid for James Milner (Newcastle) and Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough) respectively.

The 26-year-old moved from Tottenham to the Stadium Of Light 18 months ago and scored 25 goals in his first season for the Black Cats.

Bent has been less prolific during the current campaign but has scored 81 Premier League goals in the last five seasons - a figure only bettered by Didier Drogba and Wayne Rooney on 82 apiece.

Bent began his career with Ipswich a decade ago and also had a spell with Charlton before a £16.5million switch to Tottenham in 2007.

He spent two years at White Hart Lane before moving to Sunderland during the summer of 2009.

In total he has scored 128 league goals in 308 appearances.

Bent has won seven senior England caps and scored his first goal for his country during the Euro qualifier with Switzerland in Basle in September.

His signing will take Villa's potential spending in this transfer window close to the £30million mark after already signing Lyon midfielder Jean Makoun for £6million.

Villa boss Gerard Houllier is also still interested in Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam and is looking to bring in a new left-back.

Bent said: "Aston Villa is a massive football club and as soon as I knew they were interested in signing me I wanted to join.

"The size of the football club and the history of the club are major reasons for me coming here.

"There are some top, top players here too, real quality, and I've been able to speak to the manager and the owner about their ambitions for the club.

"I'm very excited about being a part of what we hope to achieve."

However, Sunderland boss Steve Bruce was not happy to be losing the England striker.

He said: "It's hugely disappointing that Darren has decided that his future lies away from Sunderland and the players, our supporters and the club as a whole have every right to feel massively let down.

"The timing is especially hard to take, given that we are progressing positively and are in a great position to push on.

"Everyone has been nothing but supportive of Darren in his time at Sunderland but it's obvious he's not been himself in training and we've certainly not seen the best of him in games in recent weeks - and we now understand why.

"I've always stated that my aim is to build a talented, young squad for the long-term to help the club achieve sustained success and I want Sunderland fans to know that our ambitions haven't changed on that front."

Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn added: "Darren has now left the club and it's important we move on quickly.

"We've worked hard in the last 36 hours to get what we feel is a fair price for him. Of course it presents us with significant challenges from a football perspective which we didn't envisage, but we'll deal with it and are working hard to find a solution both in the short-term and more importantly the longer term."

it a bit bizzare he chose to leave Sunderland in the middle of the season when they are doing well in the league.

Decent signing for Villa and exactly what they need - someone to put away the chances. The money is crazy but he's certainly up there with the league's finest in terms of goalscoring ability, especially for a team at the level of Villa.

24m (including potential add-ons) is an amazing price for Bent: I can only imagine that Villa's owner is panicking about the prospect of relegation because at this rate they are going to rack up another big accounting loss.

Still, Spurs get 10% of the profit made by Sunderland beyond the 16.5m they paid Spurs for Bent, so I'm not complaining .... every little helps.

Big price - but Bent scores goals. Bet O'Neill's got something to say about Villa spending that much on one player.

Villa need a striker but im shocked if Sunderland are willing to sell the man they have relied on for goals for so long.

That is what I thought too but the fee is around the region of 24m now. So this is a great deal for Sunderland. They have made a profit of around 8m and now have more money to spend in the transfer market.

Indeed. Just imagine how much Harry's wife would be going for!

*Thanks to ACEtheORIGINAL for that lame gag :)

He's only 26, he's a proven scorer - it's a little bit crazy but not totally mental.

Brucey must be doing backflips in his office.

24 fecking million.

feck right off. Jesus.

Nail on the head.

Feck knows why people have decided they can read his mind and he'll be banging on Fergie's door demanding to leave the local club he grew up supporting.

I can only assume they're projecting their own wishes to get rid of homegrown talent and buy in a who's who of muppet transfer targets in mainland Europe.

I suspect you've answered your own question.

That, and people just seem to want change for change's sake. Sell players and get in players of equivalent ability but who are "new".

In the January window two years ago, Tottenham lodged an official bid with Sunderland of £25 million for Kenwye Jones. I remember creating the thread on here and Glastonspur denying it ever happened despite Niall Quinn saying so on the Sunderland website.
This was the same Niall Quinn who claimed - on the official Sunderland site - that the deal for Bent from Spurs was for 10m only, when the Spurs legally-required statement to the Stock Exchange confirmed it was for 16.5m.

Thus he is proven to tell whatever lies he thinks will please the Sunderland fans.

Spurs paid 16.5m for Modric: the notion that Spurs would offer 25m for Kenwynne Jones (FFS!) is completely without credibility.

Yeah, and if they rated him that highly surely they'd have been back in for him at 8 mill when they still could use a striker.

Can't really see why so much of an issue is being made of this transfer.

Bent's exactly what Villa need as they lack a proven goal scorer and whatever you say about Bent he's one of the best in the Premiership for getting goals for the clubs he has been at.

I'm fairly confident Villa will move up the table with him in the side. There's not a vast amount in terms of points between the mid table sides and the relegation contenders.

18m is about the going rate for a Darren Bent at the moment. Look at what City paid for Milner. United are going to have enter the market for an established player we want sooner rather than later and when we finally do so, we will probably being paying over the subjective transfer valuations that come about on the CAF.

You could argue Villa could have forced a better deal as Bent seems to have instigated the transfer but it makes sense for them to conclude the deal ASAP.

The price is 24m, including future potential add-ons.

What are the add ons though? It always annoys me when they are quoted in full for the transfer when they have not been realised. Most of the time it's just the media being lazy.

We had this with Carrick when we only paid 14m upfront and the media quoted the adds on as if they had been paid to the full 18.6m. Same with Rooney. Generally if the add ons have been paid then he has been successful both individually and collectively with the club so the extra would be worth it and in essence the add ons pay for themselves.

Well, mostly the add-ons do get paid eventually - as happened with Carrick, as happened with Bent's sale to Sunderland etc etc.

You can't just ignore add-ons as if they don't exist.

The question then becomes is Bent worth 24m? Personally I think not.

You can't ignore the add ons but what people don't seem to factor in is if the add ons are actually paid the deal tends to reflect good value for the buying club.

United paid 14m upfront for Carrick. That was what we paid in the transfer fee to get the player. Plenty of adds on were attached to the deal in terms of individual appearances, success for the club and such like which could see it rise to 18.6m. I can't remember them exactly but United's deals always followed a similar line with extras paid for winning titles and the CL as well as based on the number of appearances the player made. If those are paid it tends to mean the player has contributed to what the club actually wanted(i.e. they have signed someone who has featured for them regularly and helped them towards success) so payment of the add ons is precisely what you would want.

What tends to happen is the add ons are added to the fee paid at the beginning when they have not been realised and used as a means of further criticising the value of the deal when the transfer is made because it inflates the fee. It's not the correct way of measuring them and it's fecking annoying when the fees for the likes of Nani, Anderson, Rooney and Carrick are banded about. Club's structure deals like that because they have no problems paying them out and the selling club can get more money on a future basis which makes them more likely to sell. It's sensible.

The fee paid upfront for the player is what the clubs have agreed is how much they value him and how much they are paying to secure his services alone. The add ons should be measured differently.

The one thing with Bent is that Villa could have strung the deal out abit as he had put in a transfer request and secured a lower fee and potentially lower add ons as well but seemed happy to pay what Sunderland wanted immediately. I could get an argument criticising them for this but not one that values Bent at 24m immediately when they have not paid that for him. If people don't think he is worth 18m then fair enough, but I'd say that is about the going rate for a proven English born goalscorer at the moment.

I'd say in the current market a attacking player is worth a minimum of a £1m for every goal they score in the premier league on average a season. Not taking into account age (obviosuly more if they've been doing it consistently at a young age and less if they're coming towards the end of they're careers).

Players are only ever worth what people are prepared to pay for them, If Villa are prepared to pay 24m for Bent he's worth 24m.

tbf to Bent, if Villa win their game in hand they are only 9 points behind Sunderland with arguably a better set of players around him.
