Except you have no idea what the budget is, or financial considerations forthcoming which could affect it.

Uhm, how often do we have a net spend of 100m+? Vary rare, so it's safe to assume that it's around that mark, in which case fans have a vested interest in seeing unknown players be purchased for reasonable sums.

It isn't rocket science, so not sure why you don't get it.

United need to learn to walk away from such ridiculous deals. Look at City on how they hold firm on a valuation.
City can afford to do that with a massively expensive squad already assembled and coming from a position of strength. We can't. We need these players and other clubs know that and make unrealistic demands.

Martial had a bad season when Lukaku came, and another after Ronaldo came, so it seems kinda fair.
He had a bad season when Zlatan came too. He had a bad season when Fred came too. Hey, seems like he had only 2 decent to good seasons in 7 seasons.

If the CAF was in charge of negotiations we'd either pay way over the odds "Just pay the money" Sancho Era or we'd walk away from every single deal.

Funny how the CAF complains about worrying that the club signing no one but they'd also in another breath, walk away from A LOT of potential deals instead of negotiating.

Funnily enough, it's the two seasons where he was the main man at 9.

This guy probably will demand playing time and won't be ready to warm bench or play u23. It would be interesting how ETH will convince him to join.

He needs to be the main man at no 9. United are not supposed to sign anyone else. People should not hurt his feelings.
Manager should not shout at him. No one should talk about him in public. His wife/girlfriend should not fight with him.

Looks like a long list of conditions that need to get satisfied.

What I don't get is fans who don't care how much we spend. History suggests we don't have an unlimited budget, with many holes to fill we should obviously spend wisely. Nothing good can come from spending stupid money on an average player.

That fee is crazy, Bayern got the best French striker prospect since Benzema for 25m less and PSG signed another heralded French prospect for 20m less

EPL teams and especially us aren’t Bayern. Also, a lot depends on who we are bidding against. Bayern faced little competition for Tel’s signature.

You are spot on. Some players require special man management and Ole was able to get the very best out of him. Then he made the fatal mistake of acquiring Cavani the next season, who completely alpha'd him.

The Lukaku bit is absolute nonsense. Not least because Martial wasn't played consistently as a 9 until Ole arrived (had a few games as a 9 when he first joined until LVG moved him out wide as Depay wasn't up to scratch), so he was never in direct competition with Lukaku.

Rashford was his competition that year at LW, who he ended up benching and starting ahead of.

Well admittedly I just wrote that post from my very vague memories of stuff.

It does seem like Martial has only performed well when in a highly mobile attack (or counter-attack), and if the Lukaku thing was wrong, what I distinctly remember was thinking that Lukaku needs to leave because our attack is better without him, and the Martial-Rashford combination worked better without him. And I have exactly the same thoughts about Ronaldo now. Ronaldo is amazing, but our team is not better with him in it.

They did really well to negotiate to get Grealish for £100m. Would have cost £200m if they didn’t hold firm.

It isn’t. It’s a lazy headline. The detail in the reality was Lukaku signed and he was immediately dropped. Rashford was favoured as first choice left winger, with Martial getting substitute cameos. I think that reasonably consitutes as ‘competition’. However, Martial came off the bench week after week to score goals and perform very well. Of course, his detractors on the caf declared that it was because Rashford had ‘made defenders tired’ so it was easy for him. There was a campaign by many to get him in the team. Whatever the position - it was clear he didn’t shrink in the face of competition. He just wasn’t fancied by his manager.

The following season, he found himself in the same position. And instead of falling apart, we had the ‘funny how Martial and Pogba are the ones keeping Mourinho in a job’ consensus on here after he again delivered despite the clear lack of full confidence from his manager.

And his form went to shit as soon as Alexis signed, although that wasn't only Martial

Perhaps because he was again, immediately singled out by Mourinho as soon as Alexis signed and moved to the right to accommodate him before being dropped, despite his excellent form before Alexis arrived and despite the fact that Alexis did not come in and perform better than the man he replaced.

Clearly, Mourinho did not like him, yet he still stood up on many occasions when the chips were down for him.

What if the table itself is made of concrete geebs?

Tell me this isn't true

When Lukaku came Martial was mainly playing as a winger, he also started that season behind rashford in the pecking order for the left wing. He thrived from the competition and dislodged rashford also play in a 2 striker system where he and Lukaku formed a decent partnership.

or you know he had one wc to good season in the 8 or 9 he has ever played...

I don't think this kid is ready to make an impact in the PL yet so I hope we don't pay crazy money for him.

Interestingly Martial detractors have an easy way to criticize him without talking through their backsides. When Martial is trusted for a sustained period of time he either injures himself or decline.

Why the feck is everyone in here battering on about Martial? He is just a poor mans Anelka, a very poor mans Anelka, he's had 2 maybe 3 good seasons in 7. The only thing he's proven at Utd and at home is that he just can't be trusted.

I've not seen much of this Sesko kid, but if he's good enough and the fee isn't outrageous, there's is at least some sense to it.
