54m Euros seems a normal fee to me.

It's 2017. If you think the fees for him and Silva are out of the norm, you are in for a shock this summer I think.
Not for a full back, world record money I think. Probably not accurate though, if Silva only went for £43m.

we should be able to beat city for this signing.
If we have indeed offered the same amount as them, and we both have champs league football...It's difficult to see why he would choose them.

Edit....from what I reading here, it looks like the offered way more, is this true?

This thinking is outdated.

It is quite funny when people read rumours and decide we're definitely in for them and they're definitely the priority. Just a way to bash the manager or Woodward.

extremely

its not 2009. And they aren't Liverpool. For younger players especially foreign players we offer very little more than city will for them. They have the money, they have superstars, they have great facilities and a word class coach. They will never have our history or our fanbase, but that doesn't count as much these days. It's going to take proper negotiations if we are both in for the same player.

We don't need a LB. Darmian deserves his chance, Blind is a solid backup, and we can all hope that Shaw can step up and make the position his own next year.

We need somebody who can attack and support his winger. Shaw is the only one that can do it and he's never fit.

It's fun to have the ball. I could see an attacking fullback much preferring to play under Guardiola than Mourinho. CBs who like to defend more than pass should choose us, and 9s and wingers who like to play on the counter, and anyone who prefers defending overall.

More on topic, Mendy seems like a great idea. Excellent crosser and athlete and presumably will improve defensively under Mourinho.

Surely playing for United is more appealing for a player than City?

We've won more trophies last season, are in the CL, have a world class manager and have two French players to boot.

For a player like Bernardo Silva playing for a possession-based Pep side is more appealing than chasing around after the ball for Mourinho.

It's not even that. Looking at the two teams right now, if I were a young lad choosing between United and City, their team looks so much more exciting. I'd want to be a part of that (if I weren't a United fan)

I suspect that might be an issue for us, I don't see attacking players accepting this "humble pragmatist" garbage or wanting to play as auxillary fullbacks because we are too scared to attack a half decent team.

Young can also do it Tbf. Blind aswel but generally our LB.... especially when Valencia plays doesn't go forward due to how far up Valencia plays.

I really hope we are in for them....he's perhaps the best crosser of a ball I have seen from a left-back in my life he's that good and accurate

He's like a Baines that can actually run

Amazing going forward, his crossing is so accurate and he links well with the midfield. However, I don't rate his defensive skills that highly, albeit have only watched him about 8 times.
He is good enough defensively, he does rely on his physical attributes to get him out of trouble. But JM is the perfect coach to sort him defensively. He will be a beast in our defence with Valencia and Bailly.

It's not ideal. I expect he'll sign a good defensive midfielder which should give the wing backs more licence to attack. It's needed in the modern game where much of the width comes from full backs.

Man city's defence is their biggest problem yet they are going for a left back with suspect defence. Funny.

More than happy with Luke Shaw, lad just needs a full pre-season and some faith placed in him and we'll see the benefits.

fecking City, we can't wait for Shaw, he's missed nearly 2 full years of football and is clealry injury prone.

He's unreliable though. There was a good player in Jack Wilshere at one stage too.
True but he's only 21, whereas Jack is 25 now so they're at different stages of their career. It's all in the noise anyway as I don't see United selling Shaw to City, but I don't think it's a disaster for United if they don't pick up a left back.

Have people seen Mendy defend? Ok he might improve but at the moment he's got just as much potential to be a liability there

Shaw's injury granted him one last chance as we won't be able to move him on this summer.

How I feel too. He's talented, sure, but so is Phil Jones. We need someone who can play, not someone who we've been waiting around on for season upon season now.

If we miss out I wouldn't care, we have options at LB and that position is probably the last one in which we should invest.

It's way too much money for a full back when Shaw remains on our books. City can have him.

That's very harsh assestment of shaw. Many Wingers and Full backs have struggled to cope with mourinho's high physical demands in the philosophy in the position.

Players being solid defensively under Jose is the least of our problems. Look at the transformation to our defence this season. Rojo has looked like Maldini, when last season he couldn't even make toast.

I was referencing more those who are worried about him going to City

That's not my only issue with him. If it was just tactical I'd be more open to giving him more of a chance, but he's not reliable from a fitness pov either. He came in for a few games and then was injured for the rest of the season again. We already have Phil Jones for that role in the squad.

Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't sell Shaw, I'd keep him around as competition to see if he can get his shite together but if we were to sign another LB and he made that position his own, I wouldn't be complaining either.

Mendy is more than good enough defensively.

And Shaw is almost certainly done at United. He ended up as fourth choice last season. I think he will ask for a move to try and get his career back on track.

Shaw will prove himself with some degree of patience. He was destined to take some time after the injury, and then mourinho stopped playing him at all.

Yep, like Jones he can compete for a spot but shouldn't be catered to.

It's one of our weakest positions, we don't have a single quality option there, just a bunch of mediocre options that we rotate week after week as none of them are good enough to be a starter consistently. Shaw is a crock, Blind is too slow and Darmian is basically just a CB, he's impotent if he crosses the halfway line which leaves our LW stuck 2 on 1 all of the time, and even Jose openly said Rojo is an awful LB.

The player i really wanted, more than Silva. One of our most pressing needs is LB and there arent many good options available. With this signings, people will see what a huge difference it makes. Its like watching Anderson, Cleverley, Gibson, Fletcher, Schneiderlin, Fellani in centre midfield passing backwards and sideways with no abilities to beat players with any creativity for many years, then suddenly seeing Pogba in the first few games for us. We get this and Fabinho, we will finish above City. Personally, i think its the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea for the league for the next few years and i can't see many people coming close given the wealth and managerial issues being sorted out. Transfer battles outcomes will most definitely determine successes on the pitch.

If Shaw will be fit him and Blind are more than good enough options. Don't get me wrong, if we can get Mendy or some other LB great but we have other positions which are more urgent in which we must buy new players.

While you know what Real madrid will be getting theo hernandez from their main rivals for a mediocre 30 m euros with already having marcelo.
