Would you be happy to see Jose Mourinho become next United manager?

So with Van Gaal now completely undermined for the rest of the season, are we going to make this happen post haste rather than risking our top 4 status?

I don't mind his ego or his personality, I don't mind that he pushes buttons and boundaries and I don't mind that he had a tough year at Chelsea. I think he's the best coach in the world at the moment along with Pep and it's the sensible appointment. I am concerned about:

a) His playing style. He needs to adapt to the way Manchester United expect to play football. Football by numbers isn't going to cut it and he'll to really invest into an attacking mindset. I think he recognises that and will adapt. I hope so.

b) His record with youth. This one is up to the club to put structures in place to provide him with young players of the right ability. That said, there are talents like Shaw, Martial, and Pereira who he'll need to show he can turn into top class players.

I'm excited about it if he does come in - I think it's a great time to get him. His image has taken a knock and he'll feel he has to prove himself all over again. It's clear this is the job he's coveted for years and I can see him wanting it to be his iconic role. In his mind he'll want to prove Chelsea wrong, prove he's better than Pep and prove he can match up to Fergie.

My thoughts too. The timing is the only thing that's wrong about this.

I have said many times I did not want Jose.

At this point not sure what options we have: Klopp at Pool, Pep at City, Ancelotti at Bayern.

Blanc or Simeone would be interesting... ? Pochettino? Anyone I miss?

Woodward has made a mess of this :(.

Yeah its great. Next season we will have some pretty intense rivalries again...Mourinho and United vs Liverpool, Mourinho vs Guardiola, Mourinho vs Wenger, Mourinho vs Chelsea. Exciting

Mourinho vs the World, basically.

I have said in this thread that while I'm not happy I will accept him as manager if it happens.

Understandable. Everyone has their own ideals! I think in the current environment, with City having Pep, Liverpool with Klopp, Tottenham looking strong...we need to make this appointment. Who knows if it will be good long term but I think we need to put that thinking aside for a short while since we've sunk badly after Fergie left.

I was against him under the proviso we could get Pep but now, as a strategic decision, I think he's the right guy.

Mourinho already basically hates all of United's rivals and title challengers apart from Chelsea so it's pretty much a perfect job for him. A club with money to spend, has the "big club status", he can be the one to bring us back to the top as it always seemed like it had to be, and a club where the board doesn't really intervene in the football side of things (so much so that many would probably want them to be more decisive on things like sackings).

Can you even imagine the hate they would have for us, there isnt a measurement invented for it. Jose Mourinho is the manager of Manchester United

Im no native English speaker but am I the only one to find these two sentences contradicting?
I assume we either hire Mourinho or Giggs but Giggs don't want to be Jose's assistant

Wanted him when Fergie left, thought he could be the man to bury "five times" as well as move beyond 20. Now, I'm scared and excited at prospect, but I hope he's not damaged goods.

Hadn't even thought of that yet! Will be brilliant to have Arsene and his band of merry disappointments hating us again. There was something almost sad and pathetic about the last decade, where Wenger had pretty much just cowed to Fergie's obvious superiority and didn't bother fighting anymore.

I see someone mentioning Klopp as someone we should have been after before going for José. Wtf. Klopp over José is crazy talking and just plain stupid. José is the better manager and one of the best in the world.

You're gonna miss his little blog aren't you?

Yes but more so for his influence on the Spanish speaking clique and especially on De Gea.

I don't think the squad would be any weaker losing Mata to be honest.

So, what? We agree with Jose before the end of the month say, and he's then working on transfer targets/plans for next season whilst LVG just focuses on the games?

would you want Giggs around knowing he wants your job?
It would start looking a bit bizarre if he stays as number 2 again. Moyes, LVG, Mourinho....you can't be number 2 forever like Gill said

Holy shit yeh.

Tell you what I'd relish being the most hated club again. United vs Liverpool doesn't need much encouragement to get heated but throw in Mourinho..

Similar situation with City, the renewal of a Mourinho vs Guardiola rivalry in the same city has the potential to be epic entertainment.

It'd be great to reclaim our mental dominance over Arsenal again, no one better for getting one over Wenger.

And of course the Chelsea games will be some atmosphere as well.

If we're winning whilst it's all kicking off I'm gunna be stoked.

Mata is the obvious one, though he might not be sold right away because a general lack of quality and depth in the attack. Lingard probably won't play much either but he's pretty average anyways so no big deal there. Think he'd go for a center back and quality in attack mainly, possibly a midfielder as well. Lineup wise it'll probably be kind of similar to what Van Gaal picks, just with Blind rotating with Shaw at left back and an actual center back next to Smalling. Schneiderlin/Schweinsteiger/Herrera all seem exactly like the type he would like, and he's always liked Rooney and was interested in Martial last summer so those 2 will probably still have important roles. Not sure what he'd do with Memphis. Possibly keep him as a squad option and give him a chance, as he can be a very effective player like Mou likes, but then again, he could just send him out on loan or something. Januzaj needs to show he has it in him to be a top talent again, otherwise I fear for his future regardless of who is in charge. Pereira seems like an Oscar type player, and Mourinho loved Oscar. Darmian and Shaw are already basically Mourinho type right backs, being very defensively solid.

In terms of incomings, he was interested in Griezmann and Stones for Chelsea for a while, and both would be perfect signings for us, so those could be potential targets. No idea who else though. Maybe Ibrahimovic in as his contract I think is out in the summer, to be a stop gap? Pretty sure he had a good relationship with Mourinho.
Thanks.

Not to mention the potential fireworks if we face Real or Barca in the CL. Amazing to think one guy could instantly make us one of the most hated teams in Europe....

What's the appeal? I genuinely don't understand why anyone would want to be a supporter of the most hated club.

Before the red carpet is rolled out to welcome Manchester United's new manager, a word of warning.

Talks should not be interpreted as an agreement, as an offer, or even the promise of one. None of that has happened.

Neither should we assume Ryan Giggs is out of the running, nor that the merits of Laurent Blanc and Mauricio Pochettino, the two other realistic candidates for the job, have been discarded.

The fact is, given the pressure Louis van Gaal has been under recently, United's hierarchy simply would not be doing their jobs properly if they did not at least get some idea of the thinking behind the major candidates.

Di Marzio joining in now saying it's very possible that it'll happen and we're talking. Also I saw that apparently United refused to comment on the rumours which is as good as admitting it's true.

I'm not saying it's a good thing, just that it's inevitable. I'd prefer someone who wasn't so tediously antagonistic but such is life...

Though by caf logic outright denying it would also be as good as admitting it's true.

Jose speaking Portugeese will really help Neymar adapt to England next year.
Waiting until the day of Neymars birthday to set the wheels in motion as Neymar wouldnt be classed as young anymore so he is now immune to Joses youth phobia.
Well played.

Yeah but many outlets abroad seem to think it is close.

I can understand people being nervous about this. I am too, I still don't really like him and in an ideal world we'd have got Pep or Klopp in my opinion.

But the state we're in now with the options available, it really is a no brainer. If the options are Mourinho or Giggs or fecking hell another year of Van Gaal than I'm sorry but it has to be Mourinho.

Might have already been covered, but where are the BBC getting this from?

They don't usually post things until someone official-ish somewhere has said it outright, but the article mentions nothing about where the story comes from.

Hope its done sooner rather than later, dont see the point of waiting till the summer at all.

I'm delighted with this news.

I just HOPE we let him bring in his own backroom staff and not force Giggs upon him.

Giggs needs to get off his high horse and go and manage a division or two down. There's no way we should let him lurk around just because he's a 'legend'.

We will succeed if we give Mourinho full control over transfers and the workings of the club - something Chelsea failed to do.
