Well a lot of them if not most start declining in form.

Humans are at their physical peak when they are 23-27 years old (take or give year). This physical peak usually coincides with a players best period. That is not to say those players become useless when they reach the 30 year mark but they do start to decline. Some players can decline very fast very sudden with others it can be a long gradual process. It is hard to say which one you'll be in for with a 30 year old player but what you do know is they won't be at their best anymore and they have no future resale value. Often the physical decline can also increase the likelihood of injuries.

Which makes investing a lot of money in these players quite risky. And when we are talking about investing money it isn't just the transfer price is also the wages.

If you compare that a player of 25 years old the wages are usually significantly lower. There is most likely a substantial resale value at the end of his contract (or the possibility for another couple of years without needing to pay a transfer fee). And you have more chance of having a high performant player because they are at the peak of their ability.

Looking at the investment for Schweinsteiger:
Transfer price + Wages/year * years in the contract + Resale value we won't have (opportunity cost)

I'll make an hyphotecial example for Schweini

£10m transfer fee + £10m/year * 4 years + £20m resale value = £70m investment to have in our midfield for the next 4 years and that isn't the schweinsteiger from 4 years ago but the 30+ year old one that is having injury problems and will lose speed and energy and decline in form every year a little more.

Compare that to signing somebody like Gündogan

£25m + £5m/year * 4 years = £45m investment That is for a player at the peak of his ability.

Summary:

No 30+ doesn't mean they are useless but they are on the decline and the high wages + lack of resale value often makes the investment for such a declining player quite high even if the involved transfer fee to bring the here in the first place is on the low side (imagine such transfers with high transfer fee and they definitely wouldn't be worth it unless the quality of the player is truly exceptional).

Firstly there's no way you'd get Gundogen in for half what Bastian is asking. Not when Barcelona and Arsenal are also linked.

Secondly, what's this £20m resale value you lumped on his fee?

The BBC have expanded on their story a little, basically giving context to how we want our summer transfer dealings to go. Mention the possible interest of signing Harry Kane, and our earlier interest in Dani Alves. Nothing new to most of us.

Don't agree with this at all

So you'd say this schweinsteiger is better than the one from 2 or 3 years ago ?

No I wouldn't, I would say most of the top CMs in the world at present are in that age group, I could be wrong mind you.
Schweinsteiger is likely more the exception, however there does come a transition period when CMs get to that sort of age.

Right my annual 'if we sign him i will do x thing in x place' post...

If we sign Schweini i will bring a ghetto blaster to work and i will run across to piccadilly train station in the nude with Du Hast by Rammstein booming out of said Ghetto Blaster.

Schweinsteiger would be a terrific signing if we can keep him fit. Very injury prone but ticks the right boxes in midfield. Can play on the wing too where he began if I remember.

Hes not the long term solution, but superb addition to the squad. A real winner this guy.

You can't run to a song like that. A strong march would be more apt.

It is a hyphotetical resale value

If you buy a younger player at the end of his contract they are still young enough to either to sell to another club for a good fee or to sign up on another contract (which means you don't have to find a replacement and also saves a transfer fee). The £20m is a hyphotetical value obviously.

The thing is when we sign Schweinsteiger up for a 4 year contract at the end of that contract he'll be worthless and we won't get a penny for him and he'll likely won't be good enough anymore for us either meaning we'll be needing to look for a replacement.

Sign a younger player (for example Gündogan) and you know at the end of his contract he'll be good enough for another contract of meaning we won't need a replacement but can just renew. And if we don't renew than atleast we can sell him and make some of our money back.

It is the same with RVP he was worth the transfer fee 3 years ago, now he is at the end of his contract there is hardly any resale value and not good enough that anybody would want us to renew with him for the next 3-4 years. So we end up needing to find a replacement. Had we signed a player 5 years younger we wouldn't have to do that.

Obviously the resale value is always higher the younger you sign a player. But it something a lot of people tend to forget especially when it concerns these 30 year old players.

Naturally you need to compare the cost of the investment to the benefits. It may you think Schweinsteiger for 4 years it worth it.

Make it happen.

For feck sake just buy Schneiderlin. Younger, cheaper version.

If the reported fees are correct, we could have both for 32-33million.
Schneiderlin is good. Imagine how good he could be if he spent 2 years training alongside Scweinsteiger every day!

He can play on the wing but it was LvG himself who moved him to the DM position so we shouldn't expect that versatility.

Probably the best option. Plenty of pace, trickery, and variety. Obviously Mata will routinely swap out with Herrera and Di Maria since no one is likely to stay injury free all year.

It's actually hard-pressed to find players that are more of a winner than those two. Both have won it all, their experience is invaluable.

Very true. Both have recently won WCs and CLs so it wouldn't get any better in terms of experience. If all this is true, and I'm still a bit skeptical, then excellent (attempted) moves from LvG. We would have top class experience (Rooney, Schweini, Ramos, Valdes) at every part of the pitch.

So no room left for easily our best midfielder of the last season or pretty much any of the last 6 or so seasons?

When BBC reports something, it's happening
BBC are only reporting that we are interested - not that we are likely to get them. Ramos will be very difficult and, as I broke a few days ago, Schweinsteiger is unlikely to leave Bayern

Who, Carrick ?

When are people going to realise it is done, over, basta, finito for Michael Carrick here at United ?

He is more injurred than not. He is turning 34 this season. Van Gaal explicitly said his nr1 priority this season is finding a replacement for Carrick.

No sir there is no place for Michael Carrick to be a starter next season. Even if there was he won't be starting because he won't be fit to play 75% of the time !

People that sill have Carrick in their lign ups for next season need a reality check !

I totally disagree.

Are we behind on getting a replacment in on time, and managing the transition? Yes, absolutely. By now we should have a replacement getting bedded in, and Carrick's game-time should be managed accordingly.

But on the basis of how he's been playing, should he be in our first XI right now? Absolutely. At some point before too long he won't be able to do it anymore, but as of right now he's still our best midfielder.

Carrick, Schwei and Schnei can cover 2 positions easily. one of the first two will be injured at least part of the season. no biggie.

Obviously because Blind is better as a leftback and Fellaini and Herrera are better as attacking midfielders.

So not much competition for that position. That is why we need to bring in a replacement like Schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger. And when we do they will play and not Carrick and rightly so.

I don't think it is about 2 positions i think it is about 1 position.

The other position on the midfield will be going to Herrera

And the other will go to Di Maria/Rooney/Fellaini

I don't see him...
He'll play plenty of football next year. Seeing out matches with his composure and experience will be key, as well as stronger European ties.

I really hope we get both. The more midfielders, the better! As long as they are of a good enough quality for the first team, we should be trying to get some depth for Carrick's position and for the box to box.

He's had two injuries... Two.

He played 18 league games, its a worry but hopefully next season he is around more often.
Hes turning 34, need to start thinking about life after Carrick

FYP

Yea and Falcao and Valdes had one but both been a year out of rotation and Strootman had 2 also been a year out of rotation.

Carrick had two serious injurrys and he has hardly played for us in the last 2 years turning 34 now. It is over him, get to grips with it !

For someone who's played 40+ games a season for the last 8 seasons, one season with a couple of injuries is pretty much par for the course. Paul Scholes had a similar season 05/06 and afterwards went on to produce 3-4 of his best seasons yet.

I'm not saying we shouldn't be looking for his replacement, but to say he's finished because of 2 injuries is ridiculous.

The last 2 years? He played 40 games for us 13/14. He's had one season interrupted by 2 injuries and in between these 2 injuries has shown nothing that illustrates his legs have gone or are going (ala Falcao).

In fact if you were to ask everyone our best midfielder of the season per minute played I'm quite sure Carrick would win conclusively. I'm just glad people on here don't run the club - Scholes would've been consigned to the scrapheap at 30 after 1 injury plagued year.
