31 years old in August? Hmm... He's better than what we have, comfortably. I'm not a huge fan of signing stop-gap players though.

I'd prefer we go for Gundogan, Pogba, Vidal, or Schneiderlin - ideally any two of the aforementioned.

I hope the englisch media does not speak German and try to translate the interview Bastian and Müller had in the Aktuellen Sportstudio about United...:D

We could sign him and one of your favorite.

Or Xhaka. If we get Schweinsteiger, Bayern most likely sign Xhaka. I know who gets the better deal there.

What did they say?

If a half drunk Müller overtakes the talk and starts telling that from now on he is Bastian's manager... it tells everything.

Munich Postpalace - official Champion celebration with a lot of guests. The German TV show has nearly 3 hours after the beginning an interview scheduled outside with Lahm, Bastian and Thomas - and then you start to ask investigative stupid questions... (you know this question you will anyway not get an answer to).

No wonder that they start to fool around. I cannot translate it until I see it again. But it was funny.

i agree with not signing stop gap players but i think we can take a gamble on this one. We have a young team. If Rvp and falcao leave it will be even younger. Carrick will be the eldest player followed by wayne rooney. We could do with more experience and big personalities. Its good to have a mix. We have some young players coming through that aren't ready yet so a signing like this could really help see them have a smooth transition and even learn a thing or two. If signing him means winning a trophy next season but he will be less used 2 seasons after that im ok with this. Similar to RvP signing.

That's cryptic.

I've read this 3 times but am still none the wiser.

So are they both signing?!

I really, really want us to get this guy, I think he would be perfect for what we need just now, a nice bit of German steel. We could easily get a good 3-4 years out of him.

It'd be nice to get a younger midfielder too.

I've always wanted him to sign for us. Less so now, but even at this stage of his career he would add plenty to our team, not least his experience. Losing all that experience last summer was a complete hammer blow and has surely contributed to our ills this year. I'm firmly in the Carrick or Schweinsteiger camp and would still prefer us to continue searching for another midfielder.

Just out of interest, what are the reported fees being touted for Schweinsteiger?

FFs! Someone translate this first.

We lack experience and characters in that dressing room having lost some high profile players last season. Someone of his experience and calibre would be fantastic for the youngsters to have around. He can rotate with Carrick perfectly. Blind has not yet convinced in that role.

Totally agree with this. We need some players of character. Too many of our players wilted under pressure this season.

I show you the video - I do not know if you can see it without proxy as it is a youtube video by German public TV. I hope you can see the video and look at the persons and how they talk - because when I translate you the text and you read only this it is misleading...

(I start to translate at 1:07)
KMH (the reporter lady): You all probably need a rest. And there will be one. But there will still be a lot topics to write or talk about.... Lately the club Manchester United often seems to appear. Have you heard about that to...
(holds the microphone into Müller's face)
Thomas: Yes, I have heard that there are talks. But naturally I cannot reveal anything. That are internas... (look at Lahm's face when he talks that around 1:24)...
KMH: There are headlines about Bastian Schweinsteiger, too.
(holds the micro into Bastian's face)
Schweinsteiger: ...same answer. Naturally how Thomas...
Thomas (falls in): I am his new manager. Robert Schneider (Bastian's real agent), sorry, (laughs loud)
Bastian: Yes, go on...
Thomas: I am now your manager - and about that topic we better should not say anything, Basti. I have got to save you.
KMH: Phillip Lahm has said in an interview that he does not want to have a radical change in the team. With this team you still could reach a lot targets. Guardiola says he plans with Bastian Schweinsteiger. Does the captain do that, too?
Phillip: No.
Bastian: Is that the main topic now. We won the Championship and have the bowl here.
KMH: We want to know how it will go on....
Phillip: I can promise I am in the club until 2018.
Thomas: I do not promise anything.
KMH: (did not even ask him) Bastian Schweinsteiger does not either.

And than they talked a little about the party, Thomas talked about Bastian's outfit, she asked who will be the "Feierbiest" (Thomas asked if the Feierbiest isn't in Manchester), who will stay till the end...

As I told you - do not look onto the words so much but to the faces and laughs...

@Hubal posted this in the newbs.

The video is now here twice...
The English press probably will make it to this: (like the twittertext of the sportstudio to the video)

I do not promise anything! Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester. Philipp Lahm atleast plans the future without him. Even Thomas Müller says: "I do not promise anything"...

He'll do nicely!! Question though; he's definitely faster than Blind right?

From the translation above by @Blackwidow I understand we are signing Bastian and Muller but Lahm will be difficult. Might need to pay premium or wait till next year

What would you have said to signing Pirlo when Milan let him go?

Schweinsteiger easily has three or four seasons in him, possibly more if you look at some of the players who have been plying their trade in a similar position in recent years (Scholes, Pirlo, Alonso, Carrick). The #6 does not require a lot of legwork, especially if you have energetic runners at #8 and #10. We already have one of those in Herrera, we need another in place of Fellaini, or hope that Van Gaal manages to coax Di Maria's Madrid form out of him.

Those guys were surrounded by runners. We already have a #6 in his 30s in our first 11.

I am stressing the need to have runners there. Runners are needed no matter who you play in the #6. You can have the sprightly Coquelin in the #6 and you still have the likes of Ramsey, Cazorla and Ozil running their socks off game after game. Same with Matic, who has Fabregas and Ramires doing the legwork alongside.

31 =/=34.

Look at it this way. Schweinsteiger lets us search for Carrick's replacement on our own terms. We can take our sweet time searching for a replacement in multiple transfer windows waiting for the right target to come at the right price. As it is, selling clubs know that Carrick is on his way out, and can bend us over the barrel as soon as we come asking for a #6.

This would make alot of sense, perfect short-term replacement/rotation for Carrick, right now there isn't any player available who can do what they do. Would give us some time to search for the new long term option.

Thanks mate!

I watched it too yesterday. Müller will be staying i think, but Schweini looked a bit suspicious to me, especially the Feier beast part.

Age isn't too bad. He won't be flying around like a mad man. Himself and Carrick could help prolong each others career. If they keep fit, who knows how long they can play for? They have to have a desire for that. People talk about long term planning, but we have good young midfielders coming through and all they may need is time. They get the benefit of learning from another experienced player. It's the Depays of this world, that provide the spark and pace. So I think he would be a good buy. Who is to say he couldn't be a good player like Scholes and Giggs were in their mid to late thirties. In LVGs system, he might play a role that is quite comfortable.

Nainggolain will be the other runner I assume.

I think schewinsteiger would be an unbelievable signing, age is of no concern! You are not just getting a brilliant midfielder with a wealth of experience but you are also obtaining a natural leader which is something we have lacked in our starting 11 for sometime! Hopefully there is truth in this and we pick up gundogan alongside him

If you have followed Schweinsteiger in the last few months then I am pretty sure you wouldn't think he has 3 or 4 more years in him. It can be, but right now I wouldn't be shocked if Bastian doesn't have more than 2 seasons on the highest level. I don't know when he was the last time really fit, he was basically injured all season and when he played you could also see that he is still a good step away. Rumors about a transfer to MLS usually arrive when a player is past it on the highest level. Doesn't mean it will happen of course, he still can be quality, when you just look at his age it shouldn't be a problem, but I can also see him ending up as a crock at United and do feck all for our team.

The fee shouldn't be that high and if we can agree on acceptable wages too, it's worth the risk. But like with Gündogan he shouldn't be our only signing if we add him to our squad.

I'll be honest, I haven't seen him since the World Cup, except for the odd Champions League game, and he looked like a beast in the former. I just think that the position he plays in wouldn't require a lot of pace, so aging should not be an issue. If he can keep reasonably clear of injuries, he should be able to switch in with Carrick just fine.

I don't think anyone here is suggesting that he should be the only midfield signing in the summer. Almost everyone agrees that more reinforcement is needed further ahead, in the positions where Herrera and Fellaini are lining up. But with the sort of numbers being bandied about, we should definitely take him. He can do a job for us for a few years just like Ballack did at Chelsea.

I do not think like this. He looked good prior to the winter break when he came back after the injury. After the winter break the problem started with partnering him with Alonso. He looked good when only one of them played. And even if he has shot goals or assisted - he did not really look well in the more offensive role. And I think the big flu he had in March and being thrown into competition so fast again because Bayern did not have a chance did not make it better. He just is not dynamic enough for that role - he is not really a runner and that you must be if your job is to be present near the box but be back in defense later on. And it does not make it better when a half fit Lahm works next to him. I haven't seen Lahm in the shape of the last weeks before either. He hangs behind his form even more than Schweinsteiger did after his long injury.
