Barcelona: Charged with corruption .... again!

You used to be a Barca fan, but since the club has become so despicable, you changed to … PSG?

He probably means he admired the institution. Doesn't mean he was a hardcore Barca fan.

You can be a United fan but still look up to clubs like Real and Bayern.

Barca used to be likeable and people used to idealize their way of playing. Now Barca is in the news for all the wrong reasons.

I don't think you can just terminate sponsoring deals like that, sounds like bs to me.
They may be able to if they're in breach of contract. They could have deals that depend on Barcelona reaching the latter stages of the CL, which is where advertisers want to be and where the big money is.

That would be hilariously terrible management by Barca. So might be true after all

Bonus payments for certain success might be possible, doesn't sound unlikely to me. It would only be bad management if Barca relied on that. They won't be that stupid.

Oh well, of course they would?!

Yeah sure, bonus payments or penalties to sponsorship deals are perfectly normal. But allowing sponsors to pull funding over failed sporting achievements and having your budget rely on them to the point of financial collapse if not met would be stupidity only Barca in their hubris are possible of

Not sure how true considering it comes from a Madrid based journo.

As a number of members have already mention, sponsors can’t just pull the plug and walk away from a legal document, unless they have broken the terms and conditions of the contract - I very much doubt Barca not making it past the group stages of cl is part of those conditions

This might be what they meant when it was said they budgeted to get to the 1/4 finals?
Perhaps some of the sponsorship deals were very closely tied with performance, way more closely than would be usual.
Remember Barca were desperate at the time.

They're only 3 points behind Real in La Liga, having won 9 games, drawing 1 and losing 1. Really poor CL campaign yet again but, though I'm not sure I watched even 1 of their games under Xavi, results wise they've improved since he came in. Had strong finish to last season as well if I remember correctly.
I haven't followed La Liga too much but I am astounded they have won 9 matches in La Liga. The team I saw in the CL and against Madrid in the league is not even top 6 PL level.

For the first time I'm actually glad the Qatar tournament is happening this winter. The team needs a pause, mental reset and start new in 2023 to compete for the spanish titles as well as the EL.

Just no. Regardless of their current turmoil, Barca remain one of the biggest clubs in the world, with a player pulling power second only to Real Madrid. It makes zero sense for sponsors to drop out IMHO. This is just some Real supporter taking the piss

It could be true as you can put pretty much whatever you want in a contract. You can put a break clause in that says you can nullify the sponsorship if they don't reach the CL knockout stages. They almost certainly haven't all done this as its highly irregular/unheard of and the chances of 3-4 sponsors all doing the same is....well its just not true.

Yeah no. As beautiful as it would be, that's pretty wild and certainly not going to happen. On what basis would sponsors even be allowed to 'pull funding'?

Depends if it is baked in to the contract. You must go past the group stage in the champions league, or we can reduce the payments by 50% or something like that. That sort of clause, a team like Barca may look at and think, no problemo, sign it, and now have to live with the repercussions

Most likely, this is sensationalism or wishful thinking in that MZ tweet. I fail to see huge companies wanting to withdraw sponsorhips completely over something like this. However, I feel it is plausible that they may have clauses in their contracts which reduce payment if there is less sporting success. After all, Barca not playing in the latter stages of the CL means the sponsors get less exposure.

I remember reading that part of their budget problems was that they kept on making budgets were they were in the quarters of the CL as a minimum. I assume that Laporta changed that, but then again, maybe not.

Just another example how clueless most people are. The hatred between culers and uefa has it's history since uefa banned the Estelada flag. Catalans are proud people. They love their signs and symbols. Since Uefa banned their flag as a political symbol and started to fine the club for this, the hatred started and since then, the Camp Nou whistles the cl anthem every time.
With that background, any controversial decision against barca in an uefa competition is met with such chants and whistles. It has nothing to do with the club's board asking uefa for the cl tv money in advance.

It's bad isn't it. First they wont appear on eFootball and then Spotify wont sponsor them anymore. On top of it all they have no insurance. Doesnt seem like a club worth supporting.

There is a reason people have called you guys uefalona for many years. Uefa have been busy sucking up to you for years. Most barca fans arent catalans and dont give a feck about the flag.
Reality is you are a extremely deluded and fickle bunch and your club is a shadow of its former self. Barca used to be a remarkable club. Now its a joke.

Alonso at CB, Bellerin at RB and Busquets still starts.

Bonkers club

They are actually really good, spanish teams still shit themselves in their music hall, and they are built to smash lesser spanish opponents, stylistically. Against Inter were also just shit happens games, and they missed 5 sitters in munich in the first half. They aren't at the level of the elite sides like City obviously, but yesterday was the first time they were outright outplayed and beaten this season, and it came on the heels of CL elimination...

I'm quite surprised Barcelona failed to make it past the group stages, tbh. It's a genuinely terrible result. They're going to end up with the same record (2W1D3L) as last season after investing quite a bit of money.

Since Xavi took over their attack has generally been good. They've scored 3-4 goals in lots of matches. But their defense is a bit suspicious.

Barca and Juventus both out of europes Premier competition yet both think they have a divine right to never be excluded from a European Super League.
