Aymeric Laporte | Txiki doesn't forgive (except for when he does)

If i was Pep seeing the injuries I'd have thrown about £30m to Madrid for Kroos, test the water. Far better than Gundogan and less injury prone. For CB, I think i would have gone for Godin

Oh well, not really bothered.

He's not guaranteed to adapt to the PL, plus it's a very high fee.

Godin does not really fit the Pep philosophy.

I wonder if Benatia could be a option for us. He was highly rated at Roma and I know he has not done well at Bayern.

Would people not really relish seeing Ter Stegan, Stones and Laporte on the pitch together?

Sure they'd be great if you wanted to play keep-away but good luck defending corners against Robert Huth and Andy Carroll.

I've said for a while, we just need to focus on ourselves this summer. Not worry about City or anyone else.

With Jose I'm much more confident in us doing the right things this summer.

Whoscored say that Laporte's only weakness is being caught in possession, so him and Stones might be a bit scary. I actually think him and Otamendi might be better. I don't rate Ter Stegan at all.

As long as he hasn't been fooled by LvG saying how great our defence is.

So why would he be an option for us?

Because just like Gotze he could do a job for another club.

He was highly rated before he went there and a whole host of clubs wanted him.

Mourinho wanted him when he was at Marseille.

Stones hasn't been great for Everton. That hasn't stopped other clubs being after him.

Yeah I've also wanted Gundogan and Laporte over the years.

Though Gundogan less so now with his injuries. Let's see how Laporte recovers from his leg injury and adapts to the premier league.

He seems to be perpetually injured.

I am fine with City signing Laporte, even though I think we should have signed him last year. I am fine with them signing Gundogan, even though I think we should have signed him as well. But I really hope City don't sign Sané.

Yeah.

Not amazing CBs out there compared to 10 years ago. If they are then they playing for top clubs. We need to find the next Vidic.

It's Lucas Hernandez and he has a "cheap" close.

This the Kroos that's played almost every match for Madrid & alongside Modric seems undroppable in midfield? The same one who when taken off against Atletico turned the game to Atletico dominance?

From what I gather City have indeed been after Kroos, but there's no chance Madrid will sell him, especially not for £30m, we'd be talking british transfer record money easily & even then he'd probably still be a Madrid player next season. Gundogan represents as good a value for money signing as you'll get this window if he recovers as expected from the freak injury.

Anyway Laporte seems very likely to be a City player next season & is already back up and running so you'd think he'd be ready for pre-season, seems we're after all the young ball-playing CB's, guessing this means Mangala will be off, which is a shame as he could be a bit of a monster in the correct system.

That is a pity, Ive wanted both of those players at OT for awhile.
And both are out til probably November.
Rudiger was on loan at Roma, I think they have signed him permanently in the last few days.
1) Roma have signed Rüdiger for 9m only because they can now sell him for the double price.
2) Rüdiger is average.

I'd give Godin a go instead. He might not be young. But he's the best CB in the world for me. The only classic CB left.

He's far superior to that waste of space Otamendi. Athletico's defence in general is stunning.

He has always been a top defender under rated for years. As for the next big thing defensively, I think Athletico have him as well, totally different defender but the young Uruguayan they have is a beast, still needs to improve on things but I see him as a Vidic type player in the next year or so.

Jimenez?

I think we have as much a chance of Godin this year as we did Ramos last year.

So why would he be an option for us?

Because Bayern are a few levels above us currently and even players that aren't outstanding at their level may well be outstanding at our level. Schweinsteiger was on their bench yet we made him our 2nd highest paid player for a reason.

Strangely enough, I have always found Gimenez more similar to Vidic.

He also has a reasonable clause considering how good he is (definitely a top 10 CB).

The reactions here would be much much different if we were signing two players worth 60m pounds who'll be out for first three months of the season.

Let's see how he plays here, all the hype over Otamendi last season and he turned out to be average.
It wouldn't, considering that half of Caf has been screaming for these 2 players in the last couple of years.

Yeah but he is, I believe, more difficult to target. Gimenez is in the rotation with Savic while Lucas is clearly a substitute. United should be opportunistic and target Lucas like Barcelona targeted Piqué.

Both of them haven't been out for first three months of the season whenever we were linked with them, so I'm not sure what is the relevance to our previous interest in them. But okay, if you say so.

Yeah, but we can offer him much more money, and make him the main man in our defense.

I also think that he starts, though no idea what happened in the final. On the other matches, he usually started when available.

Half of posters here wanted always us to sign these two players. They are also quite young, so I doubt that we would have cared that much that they will miss 2-3 months, when they would be here for 5+ years.

What system? A video game, maybe. I could see it if someone thought for him and controlled him. (A little hyperbole there.)

He has absolutely awful defensive instinct and discipline. Athleticism and injuries are the only reason he's seen the pitch as much as he has for City. Physically he is head and shoulders above most center halves in the league, but he's so poor with his decision making and positioning that no club of ambition could afford to count on him. He's shocked me almost every time I've see him play.

City would do well to move him on. It wouldn't take much of a player to replace him.

50m for a young player coming off a league break into an even tougher/physical league is a massive risk.

I really can see him failing to adjust too, he's a good reader of the game but I can see him struggling. Really not fussed about this at all.

Haha. A system that protects him more, and not with Kolarov next to him. Whoever plays at LCB for City with Kolarov next to them has an impossible job, I think people don't appreciate quite how poor Kolarov really is defensively!

Mangala is actually very good against certain types of players, essentially big strong physical strikers. He's always good against players like Costa, Lukaku, Ibra & the likes, yet struggles significantly with the smaller more skillful players (where I feel Otamendi is much better against). Like you said though he has his flaws, namely concentration for me, he can have a good game for 85 minutes then throw in a howler from nowhere. He has the physicality & if he can get his mentality sorted I can see him being a good defender, maybe not at the top level, but at a decent enough level.

Like I said though, I expect we'll sign Laporte & potentially Stones, meaning Mangala will be on the way out.

So, if we sign Varane, Marquinhos, Manolas, Koulibaly or Mustafi, do you think they are going to struggle?

IMO Laporte is one of the best young CBs. Well, I prefer him over Stones. He is also good scoring goals, I think he scored 5 this season.

Bit like Sakho they have the tools to be a very dominant centre back but seem prone to lapses of concentration leading to mistakes.

I can see why we were competing with City for Mangala though, even if it hasn't worked out great for him.
