The thing with Laporte is that he's a left footer, which means he would be competing with Rojo rather than partnering him, which would be a shame as Rojo has looked promising.

hummels or godin plus laporte. going to cost 60 million++ and then time to offload evans and one of smalling or jones. rojo can be our first choice deputy CB and fight with shaw for the LB position.

get back to playing with a back 4.

Seems Louis may have a partnership of Laporte and Hummels in mind long term. Can't argue with that to be fair.

He also has a top 4 finish in mind and if he doesn't achieve that he will have more to worry about then bringing in players who might be put off with no CL football, especially if they have other offers on the table from top team with CL football!

Would LvG play Laporte with Rojo considering both are left footed

From what he's said and done so far I very much doubt it.

Agreed. As much as I rate Laporte, I don't see it happening for this reason. LvG clearly rates Rojo, and rightfully so. Rojo has been very good for us, and will only improve.

That is why I think Hummels is the most likely of any CB, he's too footed and that will be a huge advantage as the rest compete to partner him.

Laporte is better than Rojo though (despite being a few years younger). If we sign him (which will be for 30+m, then I guess it will be for his to be as a first choice defender). Anyway, commpetition is a good thing and we need two left footed CB.

Hummels-Laporte as our main CB partnership with Rojo-Smalling/Jones as deputy/rotation/subs would be a very good thing to have.

Jackson is a terrible reporter.

Apparently Marcos Rojo is a figment of our imagination. Then he offers next to no proper explanation in regards to the Spanish buy out clause and how extracting the player is carried out.

Whether or not his sources are legit you just want to ignore his nonsense altogether.

Please make it true. Laporte and a great RCB would be fantastic. The RCB can be anyone from Hummels (yes, I know that he's on bad form, but so is the entire BVB team), Godin and Marquinhos.

So you're not happy spending £36m on Otamendi, but you're happy spending £30m on Laporte, a centre back who has had a worse season than the former?

Yes. I would be happy if United spend 30m on arguably the best young CB in the world (and undoubdetly, on top 3 young CB).

I would be equally happy if we sign Varane for those money eventhough he is having a worse season than Laporte. Age matters.

He did said that the player is the one who has to pay the clause.

Of course. It's a bit of a no-brainer to be fair. Doubt many would want Otamendi over Laporte.

Otamendi is not even a upgrade on Rojo to be honest. Rather have Garay, who is more suited to playing in the premier league.

Laporte wouldn't be a bad signing. But I think we need to sign someone with experience.

Maybe he wants an experienced one and a young one. There might be more changes at the back than even we imagined.

He's miles better than Rojo. A defence led by him would never be top 3 in la liga

Mendes is now his agent which adds to the speculation that we'd be favourites to land him, of course Madrid are well in with Mendes as well.

Laporte would be a great signing, no doubt, although we would still need a seasoned leader in the back - i.e. Hummels.

A defensive constituency of Smalling, Rojo, Jones, McNair, Hummels, and Laporte for next season would be very solid.

Complete overkill imo.

If ww sign both Laporte and Hummels then only one of Smalling and Jones is needed.

Prefer him to Hummels. If your a leader your born with it. Doesn't matter about age.

Anyone know if this guys a leader? :)

I would rather wait another year to see how our current CBs progress and then go for Laporte next year. Problem is Barca or Real could go for him by then.

We only need one CB this summer. Get two will be overkill despite our injury problems. Sell Evans and get in one of Hummels, Laporte or Varane and see how they progress.

Would much rather sign him than Hummels.

People will cite the leadership aspect but one thing to remember is that Hummels grew into leadership in that Dortmund team that won 2 league titles, he didn't get led to it by a more experienced CB. Maybe Smalling can do the same here and partner Laporte.
