He would be the perfect partner alongside Smalling in my opinion. The pace and reaction on the lad is magnificent from what I've seen. Would even prefer him over Hummels. Having said that, a Hummels - Varane partnership wouldn't be amiss either.

Ya of all the the CB's out there Varane is the one I want the most but he is also probably the least attainable. Personally I'd love a Varane - Laporte combination although the lack of experience would be a bit of a concern.

Would prefer Varane but then again why would he leave Madrid.

Yeah, doubt he leaves Madrid plus he's also been looking fairly dodgy recently for Madrid.

I think we need a experienced CB if we buy one more. Rather than more young talents though all of those mentioned are quite good ones.

His potential alongside an experienced centre-back is exceptional though.

 Joke's on me. But I thought Bilbao only have basque players?

1998 World Cup winning captain Didier Deschamps; and Bixente Lizarazu were also Basque.

People who know feck all say he is limited. As for Stones Im not sure he would be LVG's type and as for Martinez he wont achieve much at Everton.

Why won't he be LVGs type? Stones is great with the ball at his feet for a young age.

Why would we want another right footer when we have Jones and Smalling, one would have to go. Also if Laporte is 29m, what would they want for Stones, young, English, at Everton.

Jones and Smalling two right footers formed a decent partnership. We should firstly look to sign decent defenders rather than what foot they use. That approach last year nearly landed us with Vermaelen and thankfully Wenger intervened.

And I'm not comparing the two. Just think stupid to not go for Stones because he isn't left footed. We should go for the best defenders in the summer.

Is Herrera basque? Does that mean all of Bilbao players have to be from Basque.

Thats pretty cool the fact that they are a good club and doing well despite the fact they cannot and go buy players from anywhere. Is it some sort of law by the clubs name or something?

It is. I think it is just club policy. Sociedad sign outsiders.

He's the CB I want us to sign [no, that would be Hummels] but Laporte can actually stay FIT, because, take it or leave it, stability is the key in defence. That's why I would prefer him to Hummels.

This should end the notion he's slow, great recovery speed on several occassions.

Stones would be my personal choice for a young CB to partner Smalling but despite relenting due to injuries I imagine LvG's anal retentive need to pair right and left footers in CB partnerships makes Laporte a more likely bet.

Seeing as how teams are now setting up against us and playing on the counter, I really hope we sign this lad. As a few on here have said, his recovery speed is superb and his reading of the game is pretty good too.
Hope we get him instead of Hummels.

To be fair, Varane is probably the only one out there who is faster than Smalling. Big Chris has pace, don't you forget it.

Has anywhere remotely credible linked us with this lad?

He's looked great in most of the games I've seen, probably my #1 wanted defender just ahead of Hummels.

Jaysus, he looks good. If I wasn't ardently heterosexual..

He's young, but I'd prefer to sign a brilliant emerging talent like that than take a chance on Hummels. Although Hummels is a very stylish footballer.

Thing is our defense isn't bad as it stands if we could keep everybody fit. It's arguable that a great leader isn't really necessary.

It really is. Bar Smalling (who isn't great anyway), the others are completely unreliable. Add to that, they aren't fit so no point to count on them being fit.

Varane recovery speed is on another planet
Of course. Varane is probably the fastest CB around. I think that Laporte is better though, or at least has outperformed him for the last 2 years. Although, he has been playing in a team which has less pressure, so that might have been an advantage.

Then we have to go for Hummels/Laporte. Aymeric is significantly better at Stones at this point of his career. If however Jones doesn't improve next season, and Stones continue playing well then I am all for signing Stones and selling Jones. 5 years should be enough for Jones to prove that he really can be good for us. So far, he hasn't prove anything more than he can make weird faces.

Laporte is a big talent, I'd be very surprised if he doesn't develop into a world class center back.
He's got technical skill, physicality, mobility and intelligence.
He's very composed for his age, but still relatively inexperienced, which would be my objection to him being our only CB signing.

Because the defense really needs leadership imo.
I have major reservations on Hummels' for injuries(28 and 15 games over last 2 seasons!), but otherwise he fits the profile.

If United could make a second CB signing, Laporte would be fantastic.
