Awesome United pics

A rare shot of Wilf McGuinness and Jack Crompton together in the dugout during a home game with Tottenham in 1970.

Two number 10s, Denis Law and Martin Peters rise for a high ball. Spurs won 0-2 which was United's seventh (yes seventh) defeat in a row. In an awful period, United did not win a match between December 4th, 1971-a 3-2 home win against Forest, and March 11, 1972- a 2-0 home win against Huddersfield.

Denis Law rounds Everton goalie, Gordon West, in a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in March 1972. It was one of a handful of points we picked up during that peiord.

I'm pretty sure this was taken at the 1971-72 season opener at the Baseball Ground. The match ended 2-2 with Gowling and Law scoring for us.

Arnie Muhren and Robbo-clutching his winner's medal, lift the FA Cup after the 4-0 demolition of Brighton in 1983. Robbo scored twice and Muhren scored United's fourth from the spot. Norman Whiteside bagged the other. United finished third in the league that season one point behind Watford and twelve behind Liverpool. Brighton took four points from us winning 1-0 at the Goldstone Ground and drawinh 1-1 at Old Trafford.

April 16th, 1983. Norman Whiteside hammers an unstoppable shot in to score United's winner against Arsenal in the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park.

So how often did managers have young kids/their children with them on the bench? I've seen pictures of Clough and his two sons along the sidelines, but was it common?

To be honest, I've no idea who those kids are. I don't remember seeing kids sitting in the dugout. Disabled kids in wheelchairs would often sit near the tunnel but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

1990 and United draw legendary giant-killers Hereford United away in the 4th round of the FA Cup. United won 1-0 with a Clayton Blackmore goal a few minutes from he end. Here, Choccy tussles with a Hereford defender.

United players celebrate Blackmore's winner as a dejected Hereford defender (Mike Pejic?) looks dejected.

More action from that game. United were drawn away in the 3rd Round (Forest), 4th Round (Hereford), 5th Round (Newcastle), and the 6th Round (Sheffield United). How many teams have won the FA Cup without playing a tie at home (including replays)? Answers on the back of a tenner please.

Sparky, surrounded by four Southampton players, on a snow-covered pitch at the Dell in January 1987.
For those of us who attended matches in the snow, the bracing icy atmosphere on the terraces is amongst the most vivid of football memories.

Indeed. I remember going to Derby for what turned out to be Wilf McGuinness's last match in charge. The pitch was like a skating rink and players were slipping and sliding all over the place. The match ended 4-4 in what was a comedy of errors.

McMahon scores for Villa to give them a 2-1 (4-3 aggregate) win in the 1970-71 League Cup semi final.

Pictured for United: Fitzpatrick, Sadler, Ure and Morgan. Lochead pictured for Villa. He scored the first goal. Kidd scored for United.

United draw 0-0 at Vancouver Whitecaps after the end of the #75-'76 season. Pretty sure this is David McCreery for United.

What a team....even better had it been big Pete rather than Barthez but looking back that crazy bugger was good but often expensive fun...

Keegan and Steve James from the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in September 1973. Chris Lawlor and George Graham watch on.
