Awesome United pics

Bobby Charlton with Sheffield United skipper, Tony Currie ( a player I thought we should have signed). Was this the game in which Best scored an absolute blinder of a goal?

I finally found it! A terrific image of an airborne Bobby Charlton hammering home a right footed volley against Southampton at The Dell.

A rare shot of Garth Crooks in a United shirt, pictured here with Arthur Graham. I actually saw him score for us at Portman Road in a 2-0 win.

The first trophy after Munich. Noel Cantwell, United's skipper, hangs the FA Cup out of a train window at Euston after the 3-1 win over Leicester.

1968. Gornik away in the second leg of the quarter final of the European Cup. United staff and players inspect the pitch. You'd think it would have been called off but the game went ahead with the home side winning 1-0 but going out 1-2 on aggregate.

United drew Hibernians (Malta) in the first round of the 1967-68 European Cup. United won the first leg at home 4-0 and drew the second 0-0 in Malta. David Sadler, Alex Stepney, Nobby Stiles, and John Aston relax at the team's hotel.

United have always had strong support in Malta. Here, the Maltese Reds welcome the lads on arrival for the 2nd leg of their European Cup tie with Hibernians (Malta).

November 1963 and and stony-faced Denis Law takes a long walk to the dressing room after being sent off during a league match at Aston Villa. To make matters worse, United lost 0-4.

George Best shakes hands with a local dignitary (Irish fans might be able to name him) before United's match against Waterford at a packed Lansdowne Road in Dublin. United began their defence of the European Cup with a 3-1 win, courtesy of a Denis Law hat-trick. United won the return match 7-1 and Law bagged four more.

Something's going on in the crowd. United players look behind the goal as an unidentified player lies on the ground. I've no idea what the weird-looking object is behind Shay Brennan's head.

Wasn't there an incident with Corrigan or some goalie and the area around the goal in the Stretty was cleared?

There were a few. The AC Milan goalie, Cudicini, was clobbered by a missile in the European Cup semi in 1969. I remember Corrigan getting hit by something on his leg; probably a sharpened penny, and the game getting stopped. Doyle shook his fist at the Stetty and got bombarded for his trouble.

Bird's eye view of the action at Elland Road on September 6th, 1969. United and Leeds fought out a 2-2 draw with Best scoring twice. His second that Saturday was a great solo effort ending with a thumping shot past Gary Sprake. The sheer panache of Best had Jack Charlton and Sprake screaming at each other for allowing him the space to shoot.

Bobby Charlton's last game for United in *ahem* Europe came in the Anglo-Italian Cup in early 1973. We played Fiorentina (1-1), Lazio (0-0) Bari (3-1) and Verona (4-1). I can't identify which game this is from but if it was the Verona game, Bobby scored twice: his only goals in the competition.

Love this!

Looks like an away game so Lazio or Verona...

I posted that photo earlier in the thread, but haven't been able to identify it is against Lazio or Verona. Or find any other Anglo Italian Cup images.

I'm travelling right now but if you remind me when I get home I have some stuff on the Anglo Italian Cup and should be able to identify the actual game.

Bestie turned out for a few clubs following his retirement from United. Here he's seen playing for Dunstable against his old club in a friendly.

A pre-season friendly in 1978. United played Schalke and here Martin Buchan exchanges pennants with Klaus Fischer. The game ended 1-1 with Fischer scoring for Schalke and Gordon McQueen for United.
