Australian Open 2013

Murray is getting to the Djokovic level of consistency now, even though they are the same age it's just taken him a bit longer to reach the top level, been in each of the last 3 GS finals now, that is some record. In fact, his record since the AO of 2011 is absolutely stellar. Been in at least the SF of every single slam entered since 2011, bar the French 2012 where he reached the QF.

It's going to be some match, but in a way Murray has put another demon to rest in this tournament, he's beaten Federer on the biggest of stages. Another ghost is laid to rest and pressure is off in a way. He's achieved something great here already. He knows he can beat the very best over 5 sets, and even if he loses to Djokovic this time there will still be many more opportunities in the next few years to win more Slams.

Excited for Sunday!

I followed the game over a website that provided me live scores. I didn't think federer would win but I'm glad he fought hard and took it to 5. From the sound of things he seemed to have kept himself in it through sheer persistence and perseverance.

Like I've said before I think he possibly isn't over with gs wins but he has to be at his peak form (relative to his age ) to win another one. He can't play fairly well/okay at his age and beat 25 year olds in their prime over 4 or 5 sets.

He should target Wimbledon this year big time and then maybe the us open.

As for the final, ill be hoping Djokovic wins.

Shows how immense Federer is that at 31 he can still take the second best player in the world in his peak to five sets. Right player went through, Djokovic will win it I think.

Yeah I don't think federer can be too disappointed. He was one good set set away from being very close to another grand slam.

Yep, Azarenka wins the Australian Open, as most people predicted at the start. In an era with a frightening lack of consistency from women players, she is about the most consistent I've seen in a long time.

It's frightening how shit the women's game is if Azarenka's the best they can offer. I remember the days when the women's game was just as good as the men's game.

True and it looks even worse because of the golden age in mens tennis.

Azarenka and Li Na are both decent, but would get hammered by some of the past female slam winners. It's pretty shit right now definitely, didn't even bother watching the final, just have no interest in women's tennis at the moment unless Robson's playing.

Fair point but in the days of Graf, the Martinas etc. the women's game was genuinely compelling. Now it's got so little going for it. That isn't a sexist thing it's just a reflection on the level of quality and competition. If the Williams sisters were fit and committed they'd contest the majority of Grand Slam finals.

I think the greatest tragedy is that this bunch of nobodies are getting the same money as the men for about half as much work at a far inferior level.

Yeah it is really, though I doubt it bothers the top male players too much, they are in it to have Slams next to their name rather than the prize money in their bank account.

Been an entertaining match so far. I think Djokovic will win this.

Murray is showing some real mental toughness here, saving all these break points. I think this one will go to the wire.

same mate!

crucial murray gets this first set, djokovic has one of the all time great records after winning the first.

Murray played extremely well, especially in that tie break! Great stuff so far!

Murray will lose this. He is getting alot of free points because of Djokovic's unforced errors, but you can see that he forces Murray to play alot more for his points on his first serve than vs Federer, his returning will eventually be the breakthrough. He will keep his unforced errors down as the match progresses.

Why were the BBC commentators writing Djokovic off at 1-0 down 40-0 love down in the second set? Piss poor commentatory.

It's foolish to write Djokovic off at match point down and 2 sets down, nevermind this early in a final. He'll start firing soon.

If Djokovic carries this on I can see Murray winning in 3 sets

I don't think you're giving Murray the credit he deserves. He's making it incredibly tough for Djokovic right now.

Anyone know who Vuc is supporting btw?

Don't get my wrong I think Murray is playing exceptionally well, I just feel Djokovic hasn't quite reached his top level yet, he's made a few unforced errors which I didn't expect.

Djokovic hasn't, Murray has played very well but he certainly hasn't reached his highest level yet.

Djokovic needs to go into 'beast' mode before we can see if Murray can raise his game as well.

Will be very interesting to see how Murray reacts if/when Djokovic raises his game!
