Australian Open 2011

WHAT A MATCH! Longest women's Slam match ever. Schiavone wins 16-14 atlast. Pheew. Crazy crazy match.

And her reward for the performance? A match against Woziacki

And Kuznetsova breaks back again!

11-11

And now holds for 12-11. Immense game that. The quality of tennis has been phenomenal. And it's been going on for more than 4 hours 15 mins. Almost unheard of for a women's match

Caught a bit of the game. I can't watch women's match and I don't care if it makes me sexist. It's pedestrian-like pace.

I hate womens tennis as well but trust me this was extremely high quality tennis. It helps that two manly females were playing this match but it was sublime tennis. Not seen this high quality tennis on the women's side since the days of Henin vs Cjisters.

Petkovic beat Sharapova. She's a brilliant person to listen to.

"If you want to do well in life do exactly the opposite of what your parents tell you"

"Everybody, if things are not going your way, you should start to dance"

"Wawrinka has never won a set against A-Rod but leads the head-to-head 2-1!"

This Wawinka serve is unbelievable. Fed will have some problems against it.

Stan the man 2 sets to love up on Roddick. 47 winners in 2 sets

Schiavone is the worst shouter I've heard. Someone needs to have a word, how the feck is she allowed to go on like that?

Ahhhhh heeeeeeee.

I just watch on mute when she's playing. She and Kuznetsova were high on the decibel charts

But it's not the longest women's match ever - that record is held by Vicki Nelson and Jean Hepner, with Nelson winning 6-4 7-6 (13-11) in six hours and 31 minutes. One of their (mostly moon-ball) rallies lasted 29 minutes and 643 shots, which sounds far-fetched but is actually true.

Bloooody hell. Half hour for ONE rally

Not as good as he was playing two years back but he's improved this tournament and beat Isner in 5 tough sets today. He certainly has the game to beat Rafa on his day. It'll be a tough match.

And Federer as usual yet again will not play a seed in the 4th round

Well at least Federer had a decent draw so far. Simon played really well and won a tournament prior to the AO. Malisse is experienced player tho can cause problems on his day, Robredo took a set off him and beat Fish.

Nadal on the other hand had to play an injured Daniel, a qualifier out of the top 100 and a teenage kid that got a WC.

Now he plays an off form Cilic(being off form since the AO last year) who just played a tough five setter.

Again excuses with the draws, it's getting tedious..

Well no excuses and I've had Fed as favorite before the tournament, kind draw or not.

This "off form" Cilic has played very well in this tournament and is atleast a seeded player which can't really be said about Fed's top quality non seeded opponents till now. And Tomic was quality. Against most other players he would have won yesterday. He's the first person to reach the 3rd Round of the AO at 18 since Rafa in 2004.

And Simon was in good form in one tournament  Big deal. This guy was set aside in 3 simple sets by Rafa in the USO and he's no where close to his 2008 form.

Though to be fair all of the top 4 have had a pretty easy time with their draws till now.

I wonder how much Wawrinka can upset Federer, and how much Cilic can upset Nadal

Well Wawrinka has been playing great tennis this tournament and Fed has been struggling a bit but can't see Stan beating his country man. Fed in 4 sets.

As for Cilic, he's been playing very well this tournament. A bit like the Cilic of old and Nadal was quite poor in his last game. It could go either way but hopefully Nadal in 3 or 4

was a quality match today. is there anywhere we can see highlights

Haven't watched much tennis in recent years but I was fecking impressed with Wawrinka. Superb backhand, and he's got a lovely precision serve that he nails down the line. I think he's my new favourite player.

This Dolgopolov kid is going to be special. He's giving Soderling a right thumping.

What a serve he has.

EDIT: Just realised he's 22. Where has he been?

BBC are seriously annoying. Every time Murray wins a match they go all "Magical Murray dances past opponent", "Super duper Murray/Unbelievable Murray/Out of this world Murray" etc etc. And when he loses "Unlucky/Brave/Sublime Murray exits after masterful performance".
I know he's British and all but they really could get a little less biased. If Fed/Nadal/Djoko produce a masterclass to go through all they'll write is "XYZ powers into the next round".

Anyway that being said Murray has been very very good this tournament. He and Djokovic have been quite easily the best players till now. And with Soderling out as well I think Murray will get past Dolgopolov and into the semis where unfortunately I can see him beating Rafa (if he gets there).

This really could be a non Nadal and Fed final for once

He's been very good over the last 6-7 months or so with a couple of impressive results. He really could be a great player. Hopefully though he does not fade away like the Tsonga's and Baghdatis'

I reason I don't like Nadal is the amount of time he takes to serve when he is behind in a game. It looks like cheating to me. Karma has to win one of these days against Nadal

Cheating? Are you a R.Fed fan?

Anyway Karma won't beat him but if he plays this way Murray most certainly will.

Nadal's been chucking away break points all match. Just 3 of 10 now. He's developed this habit since that USO final. He'll play really attacking stuff to get to the break points and as soon as he gets the break point he goes super defensive and hits short and lobbed which gets smashed away. Just did the same thing again.

Well Nadal through 6-2 6-4 6-3 to face Ferrer in the quarters. Won't be an easy game. Ferrer won at Auckland and has now lost a game this year and has already beaten Rafa in a HC Slam before at the USO

Are these comments all reverse jinxes? Because you seem to think that Rafa will be beaten by everyone he plays. When in reality he's the overwhelming favourite to win the whole thing.

A bit of a reverse jinx true but if Nadal does not come across Murray I think he can win it but considering Murray's form in this tournament and his record against Nadal in hard court Slams I'm not too confident. Nadal has not been anywhere close to his best in this tournament. He's been hitting very short and straight to the opponent, something he admitted himself as well in his post match interview after beating Tomic.

In the USO he was playing harder and flatter which is why he did so well. Ferrer will be hard but he should win, however Murray I'm just never confident about in any Hard Court match.

Man Utd and England defender Rio Ferdinand on Twitter: "Andy Murray, I'm looking to see you deal with Rafa Nadal in the Australian Open semi final, the time is NOW for a major title. U da maaaaan!"

:nono:

Absolute rubbish. If anything Murray gets an overly harsh press in the UK, the BBC included. You can't blame the Beeb for being enthusiastic & patriotic, especially when their man has just beaten 2 world class guys 6-3 6-1 6-1 in a 3rd & 4th round at a Major. Even for Nadal or Federer standards that's pretty impressive!

In fact, with exception of football, British (quality) press is actually on the whole pretty objective when it comes to their sporters, certainly far more objective than over here in Holland for example.

Must be just me then but whenever I see a BBC headline after a Murray win (no matter what tournament/round) their over enthusiastic but I guess being British it's to be expected.

But I agree, Murray has been really impressive this time so maybe the BBC are even justified in their headlines :p

Murray has been awesome past two rounds, best I've seen him strike the ball in quite a while.. that forehand is finally packing some punch behind it and his movement round the court is sharper than usual.

I reckon it'll be between Nadal and Murray for this tournement, but the tie against Dolgopolov will be very dangerous, a relatively unknown opponent and he was top notch against Soderling, outclassed him.

Yeah Murray's been brilliant. He's playing even better than he was at the Aussie Open last year and Fed's playing worse. If he gets past Nadal, which I think he will, he should win this. Fed has looked off color.

Anyway as for Dolgopolov I think Murray will face a test but will get through anyway. Soderling would have probably challenged more since he's a blind big hitter. But yeah the winner of Nadal Murray (provided they both make it) should win this. However I would not rule out Novak who along with Murray have been the best players so far. He has looked very very strong and he has the experience of winning a Slam here as well. Reckon it could be a Murray Novak final. Ofcourse I hope it's Nadal in there though :p

It's Murray's serving which is the big difference, he's serving as well as he has ever done. Whether it will be enough to beat Nadal (if Murray wins his next match of course..) remains to be seen though.
The same goes for Djokovic, I reckon he'll beat Fed as he's been as impressive as Murray. The serving remark goes for him as well, he's serving as well as he has ever done. Murray & Djokovic are mates... been practising their serve together maybe?

Hehe. Just went to the BBC to see the headlines :

The brilliant :
Magic Murray powers into quarters

And the ordinary headline :p
Nadal wins to set up Ferrer clash

And the even more disinterested
Clijsters through to last eight
