Ashes I - 2013 - In England

I thought it was up to the batsmen whether they went off for light. It's not that dark is it?

EDIT: apparently the rules have changed - it's umpires call now.

You get the feeling now that Clarke will just carry on until they are all out and thus avoid defeat. He's probably just desperate not to lose yet another match.

Considering a total higher than the Aussie lead has only been chased 6 times in Test Cricket history I'd say they are pretty safe as it is.

Bad light stops play.

Australia should have declared when they had 300 runs.

Yeah Aussies are definitely safe as was always the case unless they collapsed for under 100. England are happy to run off for bad light right now.

Dickie should go out and slap some sense into these umpires. The light can't be that bad yet?

People are quick to call Cook negative on here however we have a situation here where Australia need to win, have a 330 lead, are running out of time yet Clarke still seems to want to carry on batting????

Yeah not a great piece of captaincy by Clarke there.

Australia should declare right about now. Can't see England making above 300 on the last day.

Laws have been changed. Its the Umpire's decision now, which I can understand as batsmen before were taking the piss walking off to waste time. Although in a situation like this, it should be offered to the batsmen.

Did you hear the interview? They asked Cook if he was going to use a spinner to which he's obviously gonna say no. No way is this dangerous to anyone, the Aussie batsmen will bat on and Clarke would bowl 2 spinners if need be. Why's Cook being asked questions and Clarke not?

I think they should build some big sticks and put lights on the end of them and flood the field with light.

Call them light sticks or something, then you'd never have to go off.

And why should he play spin from both sides, basically to deploy a part time spinner at the other end giving Australia to accumulate runs quicker?

Well I never said he had to! I in particular hope there is no play today and it rains all day tomorrow!

That's a good point actually. Oz should have the option to declare now and have two spinners on.

I agree the batsman should be asked, however Cook is under no obligation to play two spinners of which one is part time. If he had 2 full time spinners in the team and then he refused, that would have been a different story.

I know that but it's a stupid question to ask, everyone else would do the same as Cook. Why don't the batsmen have a say? The fielders are gonna have chirp about the light but it's the batsmen who are in the most danger.

Was there anything wrong with the old rule i.e just ask the bloody batsmen what they want to do? At least in such a case there's a chance of play continuing on

Just that when batting teams were playing for the draw, batsmen would use it as a time wasting tactic.

Simple solution - it's up to the umpires, unless the batsmen want to carry on. Not more "offering the light" to the batsmen (which did lead to time wasting).

The weather has ruined the series. 2-1 with Australia clawing one back would've set the series up.. 2-0 now going into the 4th test..

Oh well... It's good.. Theatrics..?? I suppose?...

Didn't see much of what happened but it would be interesting to hear their interviews later.

Always crap when the weather stops the match from coming to a fair conclusion. It would have a been a cracking final day tomorrow. The Aus seamers have been very impressive so far.

True. Siddle and Harris especially IMO. I suspect the Aussies will win when we go down under where we're likely to see some fast bouncy pitches which won't be conducive to spin.

If I am honest, while I am happy with the output of the quicks on paper I still think there are some issues there. I think the English batting has been a bit shitter than expected in some patches.

England's batting's only been shitter than expected by people that haven't been paying attention.

This is about what you should have expected, with Ian Bell taking on Matt Prior's innings saving role and Matt Prior forgetting how to bat.
