They didn't though (at around 500 lead with an hour to go). If you look at it from the point of view of history, yes it would smash all records for a winning run chase. But from the point of view of logic, if they bat for 2 days, they'll get it.

The point is that people latch on to the fact they would have to smash records to win, but they miss the fact they would have to smash records to draw... when did anybody last bat 2 whole days to save a match in the 4th innings?
 
Also, the records for highest winning run chase are a bit of a red herring. MOst of the biggest ever were for 1, 2 or 3 wickets, and so could have been much bigger if required. A more relevant stat is the highest ever 4th innings totals regardless of result, and they go well up to 500+, iirc.

I swear half of the people in this thread can't see the wood for the trees.

No one was hogging the strike, Australia were deliberately allowing Bairstow and Prior runs and starving Joe Root of i.

It was good captaincy from Clarke, he realised England were going to declare as soon as Root got out or got 200 so was trying to make it take as long as possible.
 
Shame for Root. I can't see this lasting beyond lunch on the fifth day now though.

Just Hughes surely? Khawaja has showed great promise and Rogers bread and better is bunkering down and batting time.

Strauss's voice is horrendous. I like Nasser, Holding, Warne and Lloyd though.
 
The way Anderson bowls his in swinger to the rught hander is basically how I Bowl any kind of meds. Have never ever been able to bowl an outs swinger. I'm a leggy who bowls a bit of raos from time to time though.

I don't understand why anyone would bother with Sky when you've got TMS as an alternative. All the commentary on TMS is entertaining in my opinion.
