Arturo Vidal

Vidal is everything Matic is plus a fair bit more. Sit him at #6 and he's still a better player for my money. I agree that the Chelsea midfield is very good, mind you. I think the biggest drop in quality is from Mata to Oscar, however. And 'ours' - I wish it was - has that bit more pace and energy.
I can't say I've seen Vidal play as a #6. It would depend on how Van Gaal deploys Mata, with Oscar his not a natural playmaker and Mata trumps him in end product and consistency.

If we do get Vidal I'd say ours is the most complete because Herrera and Vidal can do about everything.

I saw Herrara play deep against Barcelona last season. In the first half, he was absolutely outstanding in the defensive role, clearly the best player on the pitch in that half.

Things changed as Bilbao got tired. He can certainly defend though. And he gets stuck in.

Will people ever stop about this defensive midfielder nonsense? You don't necessarily need a defensive midfielder. All you need is one of your midfielders to hold when needed. If somehow united got Vidal, he is perfectly good at holding as is Herrara. They are both disciplined enough to do their jobs. Box to box midfielders, in my opinion, are better to have than a specialist defensive midfielder. This must be a Football Manager phenomenon or something.
Well most teams employ defensive midfielders to let their attackers do what they do best without having to worry about defending so much. But also the lack of top quality box to box midfielders they are a dying breed these days.

More because of a lack of box to box players around these days.

United's best midfield in my memory is Keane and Scholes. There was no defensive midfielder there.
I've always thought of Keane as a pretty defensive midfielder and Scholes the more attacking.

Keane turned into one as he got older. Scholes also started playing deeper when he hadn't got the legs. Keane in his prime was pure box to box. The defensive aspect of his game was just excellent.

We were interested in Sanchez. But he wanted Champions League football.
Never ever were we interested in Sanchez. LvG has officially stated how bad our squad is balanced and that we already have 6 attackers. If LvG says something, he means it.

Yes there are. There aren't many. Vidal is certainly one and probably the best around.

The clamour for a DM is not a FM phenomenal, but the increased popularity of the 4-2-3-1 formation over the last decade. This follows the evolution of the standard 4-4-2 featuring box-to-box MFs, to a diamond 4-4-2, which saw the beginning of the DM and AM role , and eventually to 4-2-3-1 formation as players roles are very clearly defined into defending and attacking roles. The CM usually comprises of a specialist DM, a specialist AM to support the striker, and a player to keep possession and recycle the ball. In such formations, specialist excel, and which is why you see the sudden drop in of the no. of box-to-box MFs (compared to the 90s and early 2000s) and the rise of Makelele role & the No. 10 role.

This also explains why Cleverly, though largely panned by most of the CAFtards for not being the all-action MF star, continue to get rated by the likes of Sir Alex, Hodgson, Roberto Martinez, and even now LvG for being able to keep possession well.

Keep it on topic people. We need some tweets, news or sthing. At least Vidal in something orange or red which means he's coming and it's on.

Maybe so but I'd still maintain it's due to a lack of box to box midfielders these days rather than teams wanting to deploy specialist holding midfielders.

The reason "box-to-box" midfielders are rarer is that the midfield job is different now.

I've literally just woken up from a dream about Vidal.

I was in the Eden Centre in Cornwall watching the northern lights (?!) and there was a massive silver back gorilla chasing us around, as the dream developed I realised it was actually Vidal.

All the details are very hazy now but that's the jist of it. Any amateur "Joseph's" in here that could decipher that for me? I think it's a VidOn message.

Disgusted with this.

Good post. But Cleverley does not keep the ball well at all.

He does. Just that people would call it "passing it sideways" and "5-yard balls" when he does it.

Cleverly is not the most talented player, but he's good at what he does. He passes quickly to slightly less crowded area in MF then immediately move and make himself available for a pass, which is important but often overlooked given how crowded CM is now with most team fielding a similar 4-3-2-1 system.

His problem is that he plays too safe too often, and is average at everything else therefore incurring the fury of fans for not being special at things that people takes note of (killer balls, goals, great passing range, etc)

I wish we'd move to other targets if this has been all bullshit
When you say we do you mean the club? If so, this doesn't make any sense to me. If it's all been bullshit then we don't need to move from anywhere to new targets. If it's bullshit we've nothing to move from. Unless we as a club have now convinced ourselves we're in for Vidal because Chucklevision says so, and are sitting around ignoring other players whilst waiting for an answer to a bid we haven't actually made.

Bang! There goes Sneijder.

We've gone top three and nobody even noticed!

Even if it overtakes Thiago, it still won't win, because Thiago was shut down by July 20th.

Thiago thread was the best ever. @jeston and @Olly haven't even made gif's in here yet.

Does he???

I have the polar opposite opinion of Cleverley. He is a master at making himself unavailable for a pass by hiding behind opposition midfielders when our defenders have the ball. Partly the reason why everyone was slating Rio's long balls last season when infact, Rio just wasnt given the option of a simple pass often enough.

The problem with Cleverley is he is w@nk. Plain and simple

This thread has the potential to surpass Berbatov, if it wasn't for all the burns we have had earlier it most certainly would.

I meant as us the caftards. Vidal gets mentioned in every parts of the caf, it's annoying.
Some other names will not hurt us. Vidal this, Vidal that, is boring now.

So Vidal met Allegri yesterday and his agent will meet with the club today/coming days? Trying to make sense of this all but I guess Vidal wouldnt be the one to negotiate or present offers so it kinda makes sense.

Thiago's thread was absolutely brilliant, a perfect muppet thread. Which made it even more difficult to let him go :( Those Olly's gifs!

I remember waking up in the morning (noon), turning on my phone and browsing Thiago's thread for gifs and surprisingly clever comments. Good times.

K, flapjack ready, new jug of coffee has finished. I am prepared for the next 3 hours. Let Vidal Watch commence.
Out of interest don't you find two cups of coffee in quick succession gives you the shakes?

Agent trying to re negotiate the deal Vidal signed in january by threatening Juve with phantom offers from United.
