None of us know what's going on behind the scenes but it's fair to say that us turning Vidal down is one of the most unlikely explanations.
This latest quote by Mitten changes nothing. The English journos say we aren't after Vidal, while changing their minds on who we are pursuing weekly. They clearly aren't being fed information like they were under Moyes. The Italian and Chilean press are still determined we are after Vidal, and he mentioned United by name in an interview. Anything could happen still.
I'm certainly not saying Vidal is a done deal, or anything close. However Vidal is obviously open to a move as far as I'm concerned and Juve have said they will sell for the right price if Vidal wants to move. All that is missing is public knowledge of LVG's interest. I believe him when he says he wants to give the current squad a chance, but if he thinks we don't need Vidal after this trial period, then the rest of this transfer window is going to be fecking depressing!

The notion that we'd turn down Vidal and Kroos in one summer is a bit ridiculous. This is especially true when you consider the fact that our pursuit of Thiago went down a similar route last year.
I mean what's more likely: A) we happen to hire two of the pickiest managers on the planet who randomly turn down top quality midfielders in favour of far lesser players, or B) we were turned down in some shape or form?

It's more likely that we were never interested in him or that we couldn't get the deal done than it is that we turned him down. That just didn't happen.
The idea that we need to sign someone like Vidal/Kroos to finish higher than sixth is equally ridiculous. Liverpool nearly won the league with a midfield three of Gerrard, Allen and Henderson. I'd take a three of De Jong, Herrera and Mata over that every day of the week (and De Jong is probably our last choice for that position). We're in a much better position than you seem to think.

No chance that Van Gaal turned down Vidal, he loves Vidal and sees him as the ideal midfielder by all accounts. Whether he decided to tell Woodward to go all out for a center back or wants a defensive midfielder is a completely different matter, considering we already have Herrera for box to box. Most likely I think if we don't get Vidal, then it will be because he didn't want to leave/Juve didn't want to sell him or we weren't willing to go to around 50m for a 27 year old. He is great, but not every player we are after we'll get.
