Arturo Vidal

 This thread has gone off the deep end.

It definitely needs a novelty item, though. Horribly mistranslated airport ambush interviews are all well and good, but without a message written on a football or someone's baby wearing a light blue coat, we're still some way off the quality of Hazardgate or the Alcantariad.

Shall we put the funds together to get a private plane flying over Juve's preseason training sessions saying "Be Cheerful Vidal, Join Vidal".

Probably only cost about a grand or two, we could easily afford that if we chip in a tenner each.

The message written on a football was incredible. That whole saga was amazing.

Half the caf staying up to feck knows what hour to watch Chilevision, that's got to be up there.

I'm starting to question whether alot of this speculation has to do with his agent creating a buzz to get Vidal a new contract Rooney style. According to some research, his contract expires in 2017 which by then he'd be 30 and not the best age to negotiate a huge deal. At his age and with his standing as one of the best right now, this is the best and maybe last chance for him to land one last huge multi year deal at a top European club. All the media speculation is coming from Chile and Italy, places where Vidal's team will have the most ties. The agent feeds the press stories about Real Madrid and Manchester United, whether true or not (I highly doubt Real Madrid's interest), but it makes other clubs take notice and causes a bidding war where the money offered to player and agent increase.

I can guarantee that if he comes back on Monday and pledges his future to Juventus, a new deal for Vidal will be announced shortly thereafter.

His agent would be far better off negotiating a contract with us. He'd get a bumper bonus from the transfer and be able to skim more off his wages (as they'd be larger here). His agent, as all, would be desperate for him to move for big bucks.

With our current system would we not be better off signing a holding midfielder to play alongside Herrera and Mata? de Jong would work...

My God, I really don't get this De Jong hype..If we sign him, I reckon he'll be used as a squad player rather than a key player. Vidal is three times the player De Jong will ever be and would be a suitable partner alongside Herrera, not sure why people would even question that.

To be fair with a target like Vidal it's a bit like a team who need a defensively sound winger trying to get Ronaldo. You get him, and then make it work. Ok, so he's possibly not exactly the right sort of player, but there are no proper DMs anywhere near his quality available, so we should just get him and do some jiggery-pokery to make it work.

For what it's worth I think he and Herrera contribute enough defensively between them to be balanced enough for the vast majority of matches. Especially (despite my vague dislike for this formation) if we're playing three at the back, because Evans will be stepping up into that DM area and breaking up attacks anyway. In the big games, we can play Carrick behind them if necessary. Hell, we can play Pearson behind them for all I care - I can't imagine a nicer introduction into first team football than playing in midfield with such quality, selfless midfielders as Vidal and Herrera.

My God, who said de Jong would be a key player? We've Rooney, Mata, de Gea and Herrera already as key players, we need supporting acts too.

If he plays alongside Herrera in a midfield 2 he will be a key player since there is feck all competition in that area. De Gea,Rooney are irrelevant they play in completely different positions.

One thing is obvious. He had plenty of chances to say he is staying at Juventus but he didn't. Becouse of that i am confident that he will not be playing for Juventus next season.

Where he will play then? Until now we are the only club who is regulary mentioned and several papers were saying about bids been made and wages been agreed so i am confident that he will be United player before transfer window ends. Other clubs who were mentioned are well stocked in midfield (Real and Bayern) or unrealistical destination (Liverpool).

That 'interview' at the airport . Just watched it. He just wants rid of that journo. Also I'd agree with the fact that it's not him saying rimani. I hate the transfer window :lol:

No is denying Vidal is by far the better player (three times is an exaggeration?) but I also am afraid if the two - him and Herrera will work together or not. Herrera is looking like a proper player...

I have a question to those who have seen Vidal regularly. Is he in the top five players of the world? Or the top ten? I just.. would love to know a completely unbiased review on him!

Ok, i'll play along. Why wouldn't they work together? Vidal is arguably the most complete midfielder out there at the moment, please explain why he would not function alongside Herrera? I reckon the likes of Kroos would actually be a less effective partner in my opinion al though I rate him as a player obviously. Strootman would be a good option but the lad is injured and no guarantee he will keep performing like he did so the logical option is to wait, there is no harm in possessing three great central midfielders, we can always go for Strootman in January, if we want.

He is definitely one of the top 5 CM's and may be one of the most complete all round midfielders in football today

He and Vidal would be an exquisitely balanced midfield, and one that we have not had since Scholes and Keane in their heyday.

Maybe I worded it incorrectly.

But if we want Herrera to be free we might have to make Vidal some of his attacking abilities. In other words we wont be taking advantage of his "completeness"

It's just a small doubt I have and it could be wrong. I'm not saying it is the case for sure.

Herrera can defend well too, so it's not a case of one defend, one attack, they can both do either, and are clever enough to make that an unpredictable partnership.

De Jong would be a great buy regardless because he's better than our other midfielders and can do a job defensively. Carrick, Fletcher, Fellaini, and Cleverley can not do that job. He's an improvement over what we have.

Of course I and many others want a better player than De Jong or a young player with massive potential. Still doesn't change the fact that De Jong would be an upgrade on our other midfielders and a good complimentary player to Herrera.

Yup, exactly. People preferring De Jong over Vidal need to get their head checked. I wouldn't mind buying both but if we had to choose I wouldn't think twice.

No doubt but we should be aiming higher than that. He would be a great squad player, but should not be our main man in midfield.

It seems a bit too "Gerrard and Lampard" for a 4-4-2, but if we play with a sweeper behind them it just might work.

Vidal is different to Gerrard or Lampard. He has more of an engine than them and his defensive game is better. He's good at everything pretty much.

If we were to pair Vidal and Herrera in midfield we'd have to ensure they're both tactically astute, I also feel you could risk marginalizing their talent in such a midfield.

For everyone's sanity, he could have just made a Clint Eastwood-like face before he just says "I have nothing to say".

We all need to calm down and relax. We have Herrara, Vidal is ArturON, and we add Strootman in January. [I'm gonna have a Louis Van Gaazasm if that comes to pass]
