Louis van Gaal’s World Cup homework has re-ignited United’s interest in Chilean powerhouse midfielder Arturo Vidal.
The Reds boss has been studying the form of Holland’s Group B opponents Chile since the finals draw in December.
On Friday, the Dutch kick off their World Cup in Salvador against holders Spain while, three hours later in Cuiaba, the Chileans will start with a game against Australia.
Van Gaal will have his spies at that match and has also prepared a dossier on the South Americans in the run-up to the finals.
He will have that file updated on Friday and will also add to it when Spain play Chile in Rio de Janeiro a week on Wednesday while Holland are in Porto Alegre playing the Aussies.
Van Gaal will finally come face-to-face with the Chileans two weeks today in Sao Paulo and though his focus will be on Holland’s Group B fate, there will also be a keen eye on their opponent’s midfielder Arturo Vidal.
The Holland coach has already warned his side that Chile have ‘very dangerous players.’
He was keen on taking Vidal to Bayern Munich when he was in charge of the Bundesliga side between 2009 and 2011 and went on to admit: “I always wanted to buy Vidal when he was at Bayer Leverkusen but he went to Juventus.”
The 27-year-old was heavily linked with United before the January transfer window in the David Moyes era.
The then-Reds boss identified that United’s engine room desperately needed a box-to-box midfielder and Vidal, nicknamed ‘The Warrior’ ticked the boxes for the job. He also adds goals to the party with 18 coming in 45 appearances last season for Juve.
Now Van Gaal is considering a second effort to land Vidal from Juventus where he has formed a formidable midfield partnership with ex-Reds FA Youth Cup winner Paul Pogba.
The French ace has also been linked with United but Juventus want £60m for him and, after letting run down his Old Trafford contract and leave for Italy for nothing three years ago, it would be an embarrassing financial U-turn and hardly a sound business move for the Reds to buy him back.
Clearly, however, Van Gaal wants to find a dominant engine room force and, as well as Vidal in his mind, he has also given executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward the task of exploring if Bastian Schweinsteiger can be lured from Bayern.
Schweinsteiger, who scored against United at Old Trafford in the Champions League quarter-final but was the sent off and missed the second leg, was a key component of Bayern’s double win in 2010 under Van Gaal after the Dutch boss converted him to a holding midfielder from out wide.
Schweinsteiger can also play in a more advanced midfield role which appeals to Van Gaal’s ethos of having flexible players in his squad.
But with fees of around £40m bandied about for a 29-year-old, United would have to do some knockdown negotiating for a move to succeed.
Van Gaal is also waiting to discover whether a move for another Bayern star – Thomas Muller – has any potential. He has revealed he is seeking a meeting over his future.
Muller was one of Van Gaal’s successes at Bayern when he promoted him to the senior side. The forward has admitted he has a special relationship with the United manager.
Fellow German, Mats Hummels, the Borussia Dortmund defender, remains a United target.
