If only Fergie had scouted Germany in the first place we might have got him for about £16M a couple years back. Pretty odd move by the club really.

Mate, you can't sign every promising player on earth. The same could be said of every club. "If only Liverpool had chosen Ronaldo, "If only Wenger had signed Ibra"..."If only Big Sam had gone for Falcao" and so on and so forth.

? He was more than signable when he left Leverkusen. People were crying out for us to sign him and he had a stand out year in Germany. He was exactly what we needed but we didn't even attempt.

That happens all the time, all the players are mentioned were signable for those clubs at some point. It happens, teams miss out and later regret it. You can't blame the club for not signing every player that later turns out well.

Indeed. I very much suspect plenty of sides would look at him moving to Juve and regret not buying him - not just United. Its easy to look back with hindsight and say "we should have signed x" well after the event.

It's not the fact that he has suddenly turned good - he was already amazing at Leverkusen.

He should have set the radar off big time when we were crying out for a new midfielder, but instead of we signed more wingers and strikers.

Got a bad feeling about this one.....I hope its not 'all eggs in this basket', we've been stung before...

If LVG wasnt coach I'd be extremely anxious this window, but I think he has the bases covered... if Vidal doesnt come I think we'll move for Carvalho.

Then if by the end of July you don't have Vidal, then move for Carvalho.

Transfers are strange things, as we found out last year, options can run out very quickly. Like I've said elsewhere, not convinced the signings to date were LVG's anyway. Not saying he didnt endorse them, just they felt like they could potentially happen before he got here. We have a lot of business to do and would be good if new signings were going on tour considering we could potentially be introducing 5 players into the starting 11.....

Most of the signings probably played in the WC knockouts, meaning they wouldn't be joining the current tour.

We can if we are signing players or keeping faith with players we all thought would not turn out as well......

Yea and imagine Fergie had played Pogba instead of Rafael and Park and bringing back 36 year old Paul Scholes, we might have had Vidal and Pogba in our midfield right now.

He messed up with our midfield simple as that, we paying the consequences of it now.

Vidal was high profile player at Leverkusen, not just "promising ". Anyway, I always feel our scouts are particular bad at judging South America players for some reason or maybe Fergie just had few bad experience with the like of Heinze, veron, forlan, kleberson, Anderson, tervez (yes) so he wasn't overly fond of signing them.

True, and his obsession of buying from the premier league because they are proven was another one which i didn't understand we have seen countless players are good enough bought from abroad being amazing here.

I'm going to throw more gas on this fire:

In 2011, Vidal and Gundogan both left their clubs for a combined fee that is reportedly less than what we paid for Ashley Young that same summer.

All right, Fergie made a mistake of not buying mids and not giving Pogba enough chances but I dont understand the need of some people to repeat that ove and over and over again..

What makes it worse it that we scouted them both!

Yes but Young was a winger - we didnt need midfielders ........ just a fit Fletcher was the difference between us & Barcelona - Fergie said so

Haha I was so fuming when Fergie said that!

We definitely didn't scout Vidal. I can't remember who said it - but 1 of the coaching staff (may have been Meulensteen) said we didn't think the German league was very strong, so was not any point of scouting it at that point. Only when we saw Dortmund in the CL and noticed Kagawa did we start scouting it properly.

Because we didn't think the league was strong enough, doesn't mean we weren't tracking their players, it just the reason why we didn't actually pull the trigger. Maybe we didn't actually scout them, however they were on our radar.

I remember reading about us tracking Gundogan before he went and signed for Dortmund, at which point he said United was his dream club, however we didn't put in a bid for him, I remember because it pissed me off at the time!

Anyway maybe it was just creative writing by reporters.

Yes I believe Gundogan was always heavily linked with us, but we never took the chance. Vidal though we were never linked with that I can remember.

:wenger:
I dunno whether to laugh or cry, but that is total bs. We got absolutely smashed in that game bar the opening 10 minutes, Fletcher would have made little to no difference in that game. It's amazing how much people overate fletcher from 3/4 years ago, he was good but nowhere near the level people make him out to be.

Praying that after spending £37.5m on Mata, £30m on Shaw and £28m on Hererra that we aren't going to be put off by £40m for the best CM in the World :nervous:

Yeah Gundogan was even better than Vidal during the 2012/13 season, second half of that season he was the best midfielder in the world from what I was seeing. That performance vs Real Madrid ...

Anyway back to Vidal, this has gone kind of quite (which I'm going to take as a good sign). Hopefully we wake up some time in the next few days to see this transfer wrapped up.

reading that the Glazers unwillingness to spend seems abit of a strange tag...

If it was Keane in his prime for that game we still wouldnt have won it....Keane and Scholes and prob not much diff. They had 2 of Scholes.

You'd hope all these noises are just either bullshit or leaked mindgames. You'd hope we'd done our research, identified him as the one we want and will pay whatever it takes rather than having a shortlist of 5 and going "Oh, any of them will do." If he's the one we want i don't think we'd be put off, at least i hope not.

Its all probably negotiation technique. If we aren't ready to spend 40 million on Vidal then we wouldn't be in for him at all. No one expects to get a player like Vidal for much lesser than that.

Yeah fairplay to the Glazers since 2012 :

RVP - 24 m
Kagawa - 17 m
Zaha - 12 m + incentives
Powell - 5 m
Henriquez - 3 m
Varela - 2 m
Fellaini - 27 m
Mata - 37 m
Shaw - 30 m
Ander - 28 m

That's 180 million + in a little over 2 seasons will not much going the other way. Possibly more to come this summer.

Don't forget our biggest "signing" every year, Debt Finance! Probably what, 200 million or more during that time (I know it was over 100 million in 2012/13, if you count the Glazer's debt, as well as the club's)? Yey, Glazers! feck this idea fair play to them.

Oh no I don't support them. The debt is definitely toxic and infact my first mains thread ever was in criticism of the Glazer ownership. But they have loosened the purse strings a bit since 2012. Just a bit of credit there. Even though it's essentially the club's money...

I much preferred it when Fergie was scabby and still won trophies

A few pictures of Twitter of Pogba leads to us needing to close down the Vidal thread.

Really is silly season.
