Arjen Robben

SAF has already dismissed him. No chance I would think.

I rated Robben in his first season at Chelsea but he hasn't reached those heights since.

I wouldn't put him in the same bracket as Ribery right now - Ribery is above him by some distance imo.

Yeah, me too, even if you ignore the injury problems Robben had, Ribery's much more consistent.*

On his day I'd say Robben's the third most devastating player in Europe though.

*Obviously they're interlinked, but still.

There's a difference between being the best ball-playing central defender in the world, and the central defender who's best with the ball in the world. There are a lot of ball-playing central defenders out there. Dodo might be better with the ball than all of them, but that doesn't make him the best ball-playing central defender in the world, which implies he's actually a better defender.

Nope, it doesnt.

Because in theory every single defender who can "play the ball" would be categorised as a ball-playing defender. Because they all play the ball, right?

So it would just be the best defender in the world. So Vidic - despite distribution of the ball not being one of his main strengths.

The best ball-playing central defender is the player who plays the ball best from central defence. Not the best defender who kicks a ball now and again.

Or at a stretch, the best defender who plays the ball around in a cultured way - which very few do.

Right now I'd say its Pique. Because we're yet to see any evidence that we even intend to use Dodo as a central defender ;)

Pique and Marquez are pretty much in a league of their own for using the ball.

He has played about 25 league matches each of the last 2 seasons...so I wouldn't say he is that injury prone

We sold Saha because he was "injury prone" last summer, having played 22 matches. There's not much in it is there.

I reckon Robben on the form is the best natural left winger out there. Problem is obviously his injuries.

Sneijder would be a better shout I think. I reckon he would suit us well, and I somehow struggle to see him Kaka and Ronaldo in the same team, as they all demand the ball a lot.

Don`t know if Real would sell though.

So who actually watched him a lot last season? He's not the same player who was at Chelsea.

The guy is as selfish as Ronaldo was in the champions league final, only he never has anything to show for it. What was it, 7 goals and 6 assists last season? Thats not even among the top 10 most productive wingers in La Liga last season. He looks good when he bursts past players, I'll give you that. He just has very little end product. He's a left footed Joaquin.

Rumour has it that he's been offered to Spurs, could be his first step on that well trodden path.

You're kidding yourself. Ronaldo is all of those things, but he still took the league by storm.
It's you kidding your self. Ronaldo is a team player. Any one claiming his like Robben is simply beyond mistaken. No one who is like Robben, as selfish and self centered on the pitch and off it, can ever become the best player in the world.

At the least you'd have acquired a very direct attacking threat from the flanks, in Robben.
One incapable of ever passing the ball, even on decent basis, to players in better positions than him. I'd rather have Nani every day of the week.

And 25 is certainly not old for a player. Especially for a player to learn, that's just a ridiculously unfounded statement.
Read what I was saying again before jumping to your usual conclusions. I was instead saying Fergie is too old for the task of bringing the best out of an utter head case like Robben. It should be obvious to anyone that none one can actually be saying Robben is "too old"

I think Robben is a good option, when Bayern don't sell Ribery or want too much.

He's better player than Valencia at the moment (I don't say Valencia won't become world-class, but after Ronaldo's leaving we need to buy someone who can easily fill the gap after him). He used to be a diving cnut, he was injuried often, but he's crazy (positively).

Ferguson always make players better at Old Trafford than they were before. He's 25, which is good. I think Madrid would sell him for something about £15m.

I wouldn't want Robben at the club for the reasons outlined by many here ie the injuries and the diving, I think he's lost a yard or two of pace aswell.

If we were to make a punt on those players released by Madrid I'd go for Sneijder and enquire how much they want for Drenthe out of interest. I'd have Ruud back in a heartbeat if the price was right but would SAF ?

Robben won't be a bad signing at all, nor will Sneijder. They are two signings who could potentially improve the current team.

Transfer listed by Real Madrid, along with Sneijder, RvN, Royston Drenthe and Gabriel Heinze.
Arjen Robben - the best winger in the world,
Wesley Sneijder - new Zinedine Zidane,
Royston Drenthe - new, more offensive Roberto Carlos,
Gabriel Heinze - Solid defender, left-back for years,
Ruud van Nistelrooy - one of the greatest strikers in the world, gives 30 goals every season.

That's what Madrid fans thought when they signed them.

Four of them were bought two years ago, van Nistelrooy was in 2006.

Surprised there's no Huntelaar...

They're not gonna sell both Huntelaar and Ruud, unless they are certain they are getting Villa. Bit surprised they haven't gone for Zlatan though.

Well You can cross Spurs of the list:

Arjen Robben's father has blasted rumours that Tottenham are in talks with the Real Madrid winger, suggesting that the player will definitely not head for White Hart Lane.

Hans Robben, who also acts as the Dutch flyer's agent, has dismissed suggestions in the English press that the former Chelsea wide man is destined for a return to London.

Spurs are rumoured to be interested in snapping up any number of Real's squad players following the Spanish club's mass investment this summer, but Robben Snr has been quick to set the record straight.

"It is nonsense," he told Voetbal International. "Absolute nonsense.

"We are not talking with Tottenham. Moreover, we are talking with no single club at this moment.

"Naturally, that can change every day, but one thing is certain - Arjen will definitely not go to Tottenham."

Robben added that he knows nothing of any plans Real have for his son but he did speak with the new leaders of the Bernabeu outfit last week.

This is obviously bollocks. How can Robben's father be alive when he's clearly 306 years old?

He inhabits the body of his son like a ghost. Possession by ghosts or demons messes up the aging process and leads to inconsiderate, selfish behaviour. Only logical explanation for Arjen Robben tbf. Quick exorcism would sort him out

i watched a fair bit of madrid last season and robben was excellent for the majority of it....his stats are pretty good as well 42 games/10 Goals/ 11 Assists - i agree with the earlier post stating he is one of the best left wingers in the world

obviously his injury record and diving are negative points but i dont agree with the lacking big game mentality criticism - he always played well against us

given that we could probably get him for 10-15 million - i think he's worth the gamble as paying 45/50 million plus for ribery would be really daft i think

Real Madrid threaten to sideline Arjen Robben if he does not leave

Arjen-Robben-is-not-keen--001.jpg

Real Madrid have warned Arjen Robben that they are prepared to leave him out of their squad next season if he refuses to leave the club this summer. The Dutchman is not keen to leave the Santiago Bernabéu and his father responded to reports of a move to Tottenham Hotspur by insisting there was "no way" his son would sign for the White Hart Lane club. But Robben has been left in little doubt as to his position at Madrid.

The club's director general, Jorge Valdano, has admitted: "It would be better if Robben listened to the offers coming in for him." And it has now emerged that he has threatened the Dutchman with the possibility of being banished to the stands in a World Cup year if he insists on staying. Robben risks being left without a squad number and not being registered for La Liga or the Champions League.

Madrid consider Robben too injury prone to stay at the Bernabéu and have earmarked Bayern Munich's Franck Ribéry to occupy his position on the left of the attack. The club's adviser, Zinedine Zidane, has said that Madrid "will do all we can to sign Ribery". Although sources at the club play down its significance, Robben is not helped by his status as Ramon Calderon's marquee signing – the one promise the former president kept.

However, the central reason for wanting to sell Robben is financial, as Madrid seek to recoup some of the money spent on Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka and to raise cash to make more signings this summer. Madrid already have 30 players in their squad and plan to sign as many as five more, with the president, Florentino Pérez, tonight claiming the transfer of David Villa was "just a matter of time". Spanish league rules allow for only 25 first-team squad members.

That has left Madrid looking to offload as many as nine current players and Robben is top of the list. He is the one expendable player for whom Madrid believe they can command a major fee. He joined the club for £24m from Chelsea two years ago and Madrid remain hopeful that, after an impressive second half to the last campaign, he could bring in as much as £30m.

Madrid will have been encouraged in their pursuit of the Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso after he failed to dismiss suggestions that he was looking to leave Anfield. Asked by the Cadena Ser radio station if he would be disappointed having to stay at Liverpool next season, he responded: "I can't answer that question." To which the interviewer replied: "And with that you have said it all."

Meanwhile Barcelona have met representatives of Alonso's current midfield partner, Javier Mascherano. A two-hour meeting was held between Mascherano's agent, Walter Tamer, and Barcelona in the Rey Juan Carlos I hotel in the Catalan capital. Barcelona, however, believe the ball is in Liverpool's court and Rafael Benítez says the Argentinian is not for sale.

...

Robben went to Chelsea after SAF showed him around OT and everyone thought he would come to us. I'm pretty sure he's not coming here, we know SAF doesn't take players back, I'm not sure why everyone thinks that policy has changed (and it is in place, rightly so, for a reason)

That was more due to United low balling the original offer for Robben than anything, similar to the Ronaldinho Saga

Surprised this bloke's name hasn't been mentioned as a possible make-weight in the Ronaldo deal.

Madrid are rumoured to be keen on "de-Dutching" their squad and we already know SAF rates him. Similar age to Ronaldo (despite looking twice his age) which means he's still young enough to put his injury woes behind him and just finished a very productive season.

Thoughts?

if he wasn't so injury prone and if he was more consitent i'd take him without a second thought.

United are a nebula we make stars, Madrid are a star graveyard it seems.

SAF himself has said that Robben 'is not a brave player'. it's a quality he admired in Ronaldo.

can't see him going for Robben.
