Antony | On loan to Real Betis

One of the best loans out of the club for a very long time. Very successful. If he continues to play like he is doing, then we should be able to sell him for a decent fee in summer. Would be a win-win-win for every party involved

Another win for VAR there..., surely they can see all the angles and that he made minimal to zero contact. Equally importantly, he's tried to tackle on the ground, not high, not dangerous.

The diving pos on the other team needs to be banned for his acting job, same thing happened in epl game yday but without the red. Still acting to get someone sent off should be a 3 game ban.

I doubt he will be able to succeed vs Mendy, probably the best defensive fullback in the world

I knew he was going to be the best Brazilian forward in La Liga. Now he just needs a hat trick against Madrid to show up Vini and Rodrigo.

Watch him spin Mendy into a daze and score q brace while he's at it.

Would love to hear from people like McTom and Antony (who actually worked hard while they were here) what the difference is.

That said, not sure McTom is playing any differently. He was always a bonafide goal threat.

We mock him so much on here but he's a decent player. He was in the Brazillian NT at a young age and impressing, he just didn't work in the premier league at all (Whether it's the league, the expectations etc) He's never spoke badly of the club and he was happy to accept a loan to a lesser team to just play, I have a lot of respect from that and this form doesn't shock me, he didn't work here but no reason he can't be a good player for a decent team and I hope he does well vs Madrid.

Can't think of a single player besides perhaps Bruno who has succeeded here in recent years. We're literally a graveyard for decent footballers, maybe it wasn't him after all.

Most transfers flop, the more you pay, the higher the flop chance is. Pressure as much as anything. Often they then go to a lower profile club and start tearing it up.

Our owners testing this to destruction, spent a couple of billion and the only real fully successful one has been Palmer. Who we only got because if injury to Nkunku and Olise falling through.

Some perspective is needed. None of these players are bad. But that doesn't make him good enough for United. There are two things, first is the pressure at United (and other top clubs like RM, Barca etc) is huge and players need a really strong personality and commitment to succeed. We sign players like Sancho where this was already lacking. Then there is the unique demands of the PL, its the hardest in the world due to both quality of players and its physicality. Most European leagues are far easier. I watched Barca live a few times, there are 7-8 good teams in Spain and then quality falls off a cliff. They were playing a lower half team and it was like a training match, they didn't get out of second gear, jogged around and won 5.1. Those matches now don't exist in the PL. Many players have come from Germany and commented on how much better full backs are, which makes it so much harder for wingers.

Then we overpay for average players, look at Rasmus and Antony. Neither were stand outs in their leagues, Antony is a limited player but can be effective in less intense environments. Same is true of Rasmus. There was utter bemusement in Holland and Ajax when we signed Antony, both for choosing him and then the fee. As for playing for Brazil, look at the likes of Kleberson, some bang average players get into their sides over the years. Also, intl football is slower and less demanding, look at how some championship players turn into worldies at big tournaments. There were other better players there, look at what Kluivert is doing, a player with strength and skills far more suited to PL. Other top teams make mistakes, but cut their losses quicker and have better recruitment to start with. We also let go good if not exceptional players that we develop for the shiny new toy, and too often that doesn't work out.

Compare the stats of Rasmus vs Marmoush before they moved to PL, two players for similar fee. Then tell me who is the better prospect, even without watching them

I saw a social media post the other day saying we ‘owe him an apology’ and 90% of the video was literally a compilation of him spamming the exact same left footed shot he was doing here 10 times a match, with pretty much the same results. He might be doing a bit better at Betis, but it would be crazy to think that means he could have a future here.

Did anyone catch his performance today? 4.7/5 on google seems very impressive against Madrid

He was tidy. Remember the player he was for United in 22/23, when things were going well? He's that player. Tidy, does a job, won't ever be mistaken for a great player, but he makes himself useful

Crazy how this guy went from being scapegoated for all our failures, to becoming the most loved/memed player in world football.

This redemption arc is something else. Long may it last.

Leaves Utd and instantly turns in to a world beater ? Hojlund will be next?

Antony doesn't seem to have helped Betis attendance though, seem to be loads of empty seats considering they played Madrid.

If only. That would be great. Would eventually stop the constant falling over too its ruining football. For me anyway

Anthony was always talented he just didn't translate it well into the league environment. Though when you assess his performances, he was a tidy player here and there I think the reality is he played under a manager in Erik who couldn't organise his team to offer a consistent attacking threat. Not sure why Ruben didn't utilise him more but on account of his recent quotes he mentioned Anthony lacking the physicality for the league which is a fair notion.

Hojlund on the other hand was provisionally nowhere near as talented. Even in Italy his record wasn't outstanding, seems United banked on his potential rather than assessing his actual ability. He had a decent first season because he was getting into the box more frequently, had a diabolical Euro's then has continued that form and experience into the domestic campaigns.

Out of every player young player in the first team who could move on and be a success, I'd say Hojlund ranks the lowest for probability.

Very happy for Antony. Didn’t work out for him in the PL unfortunately, but he is showing it right now. Can only be good for United in the long term.

With Amad out for the rest of the season, we could have used Antony now.

You're probably right but the board and Amorim probably took the view that he needs to be moved on in the summer regardless so rather than keep him for six months and have a few good performances here and there, and really add nothing to any value. It's better to loan him out to a more suitable league where he can play every week and hopefully add £10-15m to his value come the summer.

He plays for Betis, who are a Conference side trying to break into Europa League

If he played for Madrid or Barcelona he'd be getting the same criticism he was getting at United
