Antony | On loan to Real Betis

Crazy how this guy went from being scapegoated for all our failures, to becoming the most loved/memed player in world football.

This redemption arc is something else. Long may it last.

I think it’s more about dunking on United than genuine support of Antony. One good match and they’re all over it, just like with any other player who’s fallen out of favour.

He was pretty good in every Betis match though, hardly "one good match".

Yeah, he’s been doing well. I’m talking about the general trend though. He could be invisible and play a 5 yard pass at the half way line which turns into an assist and you’d get loads of reactions online about us being a graveyard for players. As evidenced by Rashford and Sancho’s loans.

Antony has a great loan spell. The YouTube comments under the LaLiga video of Betis beating Madrid are something else. Surreal to see what a positive reaction random people have towards Antony, while he gets ridiculed on here like few others have.
Good for him.

Most of the comments are from United fans posted with hints of sarcasm though.

The viewers for Real Betis highlight videos simply exploded once Antony the goat has joined them on loan. That's a good reminder how popular United is.

All the Antony is the GOAT posts seem to me they're ridiculing him. That being said, the normal comments are very flattering.

By the way: United supporters are very easy to identify. Those that STILL can't spell Antony's name properly.

But we're really a graveyard for players...

If Antony came from the academy like Garnacho, people on here would be telling you he had world class potential.

Not saying we aren’t. My point is that the main motivation isn’t to back the player but to dunk on us, and it is often disingenuous. Sancho is now frustrating Chelsea fans just like he frustrated us, but boy was he good to use as a stick against us for a while.

Two things can be true at once.

I completely agree. It’s all about dunking united and laughing at how we make people worse. Antony was playing under the same manager and given many chances to play but all he would do is cut back. No way that’s on Ten Hag. No way he signed a player to play the wing and wanted him to keep cutting back.
People are haters and it consumes them. I’ll be honest I hate Brighton now a days and see myself wanting to see them lose. The “we are massive crowd” offends the crap out of me. They love to dunk on us when they take points but wont admit the fact that caraboa cup final sunk them since they thought they were going to destroy us.

I would say Brighton is entitled to that, given they've won 4 out of the last 6 games.

There is no way you know that, that's just made up. Yes, it's a meme, I get it, all the GOAT stuff isn't serious. I meant the rest of the comments, they are generally positive towards him. He never had that here.

You're that bitter that you don't even contemplate the possibility that he is liked over there? Sad stuff.

How do you explain the number of views for real betis highlight videos that exploded from hundreds of thousands to millions of views once Antony joined.

Do you believe Real Betis fans suddenly shows up in numbers just to comment on Antony?

https://api.youtubecommentsdownloader.com/v1/download/open/single/5uv14r2249i5321.html

You could check the top 2400 comments of that video. Almost half of the comments are about Antony, 1100+ comments. 650+ out of 2400 top commented mentioned the word GOAT.

only 132 out of 2400 comments mentioned Isco.

Your conclusion is what exactly, ironic Utd fans are trolling Betis videos for the lolz? Is that it?
So people over there simply liking him because he performs well is what, unlikely?

And no, I'm not checking 2000 comments.

I've mentioned my conclusion up there that you bolded. Most of the comments are from United fans and not from Real Betis fans. You accused me of made that up.

How else you could explain the jump from the regular 100K views to 1-2 million views for Betis videos once Antony joined them.

I even provide the numbers that support my conclusion, where comments mentioning Antony are 10 times the number of comments mentioning Isco, the motm for the game versus Madrid.

I'm sure we can agree that the Betis fans love him there but the additional million of views on Real Betis highlight video are from United fans and not from Betis fans.

You could say that "most comments" are not by Betis fans, yes. You haven't shown that the other comments are from Utd fans, let alone "most of them".

Lots of them, surely. Many more could be people participating in the meme, ABU trash, scousers, etc. that jump in to make fun of our player.

If your conclusion is accurate, answer me this: why ist this phenomenon not happening with McTominay at Napoli?

McTominay no longer one of us, that's why nobody cares or perhaps only a tiny fraction of United fans care how he does in serie A.

Let's say Betis decide to purchase Antony for permanent this summer. Do you believe the extra 1-2 millions of viewers on Real Betis videos will still be there next season?

Hell no, most of the United fans will simply leave and no longer care how Antony do in la Liga.

I'm willing to bet my house on it, that the Betis video views will revert back to what it was even with Antony playing for them if he's no longer a United player.

United is a graveyard for players though. The number of extremely high profile people that have gone there in the last few years only to have their reputations go into the toilet is truly astonishing.

Already responded to someone making that point. I totally agree, but that doesn’t stop it from being disingenuous when, for example, 1,5 good appearances in 20 for Dortmund (or whatever) was enough to turn Sancho into Exhibit A for us ruining players, despite him in reality being fairly underwhelming for them.

Also worth keeping in mind that Antony scored a goal in all three of his first PL matches for us, which included matches against Arsenal and City. People are waaaayyy too quick to take brief glimpses of players raring to go at a new club as solid evidence of our shitness. Not denying we’re shit, but I don’t think a handful of matches by players with a point to prove, at clubs with faaaar less pressure, is good evidence of that shitness.

Also, it's not necessarily about how good the player is or isn't. It's a bout how good of a fit are they to the team. We've bought too many that just don't compliment the other players so not only do those players look bad, so does the team. This is where a real focus on recruitment and style of play come in. Hopefully this summer is the first time we've gone to a transfer window with that focus in mind.

I have no problem with Anthony and I hope he does well.

The issue with him was always the price we paid for him - he’s like a £20 million player.

He’s a decent player who often works hard.. but for 80 million you expect much more.

The GOAT thing began as and still is a meme, but since his move to Betis, people do also seem to have developed a soft spot for him. It's all exaggerated, of course, but everyone roots for a comeback story to some degree.

But whether they recover from United's toxicity or not is a different question. It's the irreparable damage that is done to their reputations whilst they are at the club that is the real issue.

I'm not claiming that these guys always bounce back and prove beyond all doubt that they can thrive anywhere but at Manchester United. in any case, it's quite difficult to recover football career momentum, once you have lost it.

I hope he continues to do well so we can decent fee for him this summer.

Decent player, works hard but I think it's time to move him on.

Exactly the purpose. So far, it’s working out well for us. He has no future at United, now he’s putting himself in the shop window and fighting for a good opportunity in the summer.

Will wish him well. Disastrous transfer, but not his fault.

I would say Brighton is entitled to that, given they've won 4 out of the last 6 games.
Let them win a title or trophy or something before they start yelling how massive they are.

We’ve been inconsistent and quite poor last three seasons but we still made Europe, but what is bragging how they’ve done to us really do much

“Hey manure, you’re crap!”
“Yeah we know”
“We took 4 out of 6 from you!”
“How about the final, where you would have won your first trophy since before Jesus?”

Speaking to TNT Sports in February, United head coach Amorim said: “Antony is so much better now in Spain. It’s because of a lot of factors but I guarantee you it’s physicality.”

Antony’s agent Junior Pedroso, responded to those comments in Marca, say that “we completely disagree with his analysis” and adding that Amorim’s words “devalue La Liga and the Spanish competitions.”

Pedroso said that the style of play in La Liga was a factor for his success in the competition as it “fits Antony’s characteristics perfectly” but added it was not the only factor.

“The truth is that Antony has not had enough prominence or the confidence necessary to play his best football,” Pedroso said. “Of the 15 games in which Amorim managed Manchester United, he only used Antony in nine, with a total of 252 minutes played. How can you judge an athlete without a minimum sequence to prove his worth?”

I agree that physicality isn't the only thing that went wrong for him. If you put him in a functional side like Bournemouth or a Palace, he'd have done much better than he did here. It is definitely decently big sized part of the problem though. Other parts of course are chaos at the club, the transfer fee he commanded, the media attention / scapegoating that results from a single loss at a club like United and so on.

I mean I wouldn't expect the agent to agree, doesn't mean it's not at least partially true though. I don't think Antony is anywhere near as people tried to make it, but the main problem was the fee. We've had far worse players, but penny for penny? It gets tricky then.

Antony had plenty of endeavour and good ability, but he wasn't quick enough for PL defenders, nor did he have the strength to compensate for it. Even I his first season, when we did well, he also did well, but didn't pull up any trees.

Let's not also forget the accusations hanging over him from several women he's been acquainted with...
