Antony dos Santos (Out)

Unless we pay up his contract or massively subsidise his wages, he’ll be here next season. This is the old Maguire scenario but even worse.
We'll have to give him the Pepe/Ndombele/Kepa treatment. Free/low fee loans and subsidised salary until his contract ends. Sancho too, probably.

How we ended up with two players like this... Blimey.

We are living in dreamworld if we are getting anything close to £30m. Realistically we will do well to get £15m for him. Offers nothing going forward but can carry the ball...very limited footballer. Him going on loan does nothing for us other than depreciate his 'value' so I'd just cut our losses and look for a buyer in the summer.

Can't see anyone wanting him that would get close to his wages, unless maybe a Saudi club wants him. He will probably be loaned out with us paying most of his wages. Another terrible signing.

He's the most to blame as he knew the player best and deemed him good enough for the PL.

Granted but he maybe thought he could make the step up, that wasn't the case and it's backfired badly.

ETH, Murtagh and whoever else signs these deals off need showing the door.

This signing is firmly on ETH. It's obvious he identified the signing and pushed for the signature.

Madness
If a child is constantly drinking soda or eating candy is the kid to blame or the parents? EtH has no money. His bosses were the ones making the deal.

Crap analogy. Ten Hag isn't a child, he's first team manager of Manchester United and insisted on having authority when it comes to recruitment

Yes, he wanted a player. What we paid for Antony has nothing to do with him. It's most definitely the person in charge of the money to blame to pull the trigger on spending 86m.

We are living in La La Land if we think we can sell him for any sort of money. That stupid contract we gave him @10x his Ajax salary is going to be the biggest hindrance in moving him on.

I mentioned in another thread earlier, both him and Sancho will have to be put on the Kepa/Pepe/Ndombele plan where they go out on loans to different clubs for the remaining time left on their contracts. I would be shocked if we can sell them for any sort of money.

Erm, I mean they are not the same in any way.

1.) he was well aware when we asked Ajax back in June and got quoted around 50m and walked away.
2.) even at 20m he isn't worth it. we'd been better off keeping Elanga.

1. We didn't walk way, we bought him didn't we? Long negotiations where our people caved in. If they had sense and walked away we wouldn't be stuck with an expensive flop.

EtH's mistake was believing in Antony. We obviously did need a player for that position, he just went for the wrong answer. Same as the people before him with Sancho. People that deemed Antony not good enough said Sancho was good enough. How about that? People aren't perfect.

Better off keeping Elanga is hindsight copout answer that doesn't have a bearing on reality. Elanga wasn't very good, he's still nothing special and mostly excels in kind of football we don't employ. He also was not happy to sit in the bench and wanted to leave for regular football. An unhappy player on the bench would not necessarily have made us better off. Antony isn't good but he's also not worse than Elanga.

Person A wants a thing. Doesn't matter if it's good for him or not, he wants it. He can only get it if person B buys it for him. Person B is in charge of the money and decisions.
 That has got to be the one of the stupidest analogies I have read on here.
I'm surprised you can even read.

Lads not even Antony Uno Santos.

Hopefully we can get over £20m back for him. Won't hold my breath though.

Somewhere around 51m in FFP amortization will accelerate onto the books if United sell him this summer so it seems unlikely.

A loan to a Spanish club in the Valencia/Sevilla/Villarreal/Betis/Sociedad bracket seems like the best solution at this point.

I don't get how people still refuse to accept this. John Murtough was in a position where he could have told Ten Hag "Ajax are asking for too much money for Antony - here are a list of alternative RW options". As a manager being told this by your DoF, Ten Hag could have no complaints with that. Instead, Murtough persisted with Antony because he isn't very good at his job.

But if person A is a 54 year old multi millionaire paid 9 million per year and supposed to be best in class at what they do, Person B usually (And quite rightly) listens to that advice.

Considering no one has money to spend outside of the EPL and a couple of European clubs, he will be loaned out continuously in my opinion

But whatever happens, it’ll be heavily at our expense because literally nobody will take on his costs, so shipped out on loan or not, we’ll be footing the bill.
That's the price we pay for the mistakes we've made, and people have paid for them with their jobs. There's a good chance the people we've sacked will never work in football again at any meaningful level.

Transfer fee aside, he wasn't that bad in his first season. Goals tally was ok/solid it's just the assists and chance creation that was appalling (and yes i'm aware that's his job along with goals). A poor signing for the money no doubt and probably for the best he moves on.

What's bizarre is how we improved his wages from 20k to 200k! We're not going to be able to get rid of him when he earns that money.

What sort of salary do you propose 86m pound players get? Is he supposed to get 30k or something? The signing hasn’t worked, but the wages are only unreasonable in hindsight. A club cannot show a player that they value him enough to pay 86m for him, and then offer him the salary of a 30m player.

If we keep him we are on the hook for 16m in amortization next season and 10m in wages. So the breakeven is much lower than the 51m.

And regardless, even if we do take a one-time hit, it'll put us into a better position in future seasons. So as long as we have the FFP/PSR headroom to do it, we should do it.

Honestly the best possible deal we could hope for is a free transfer, to somewhere like a top Turkish club? Maybe even with us paying out the difference in wages between what he’s owed the rest of his contract and what his new wages will be.

It’s imperative he’s permanently moved on, otherwise we’ll be stuck with yearly loans to random European teams looking to succeed on a punt.

We need patience. No defender will be able to stop him once he gets going.

Hel probably need to replace Rashford or be in the shop window. Should he say hes well shite so the offers come pouring in?

We would not recoup more than 20m and thats being super optimistic. Hes failed at the PL level so we can rule out any PL club going for him.

We will send him on loan to either the Dutch league or Turkey. Hope and pray he suddenly finds form there for a sale in summer of 25/26 . If he fails yet again then well offload him to a team in Brazil for 5mn or less.

Not 200k when he earns 20k. Muthough must have known we were getting fleeced and still continued to offer insane wages.

True. Chelsea spent a similar amount on Mudryk's transfer fee but gave him a 97k a week wage. Although on a longer contract, it makes him more resellable than Antony.

He scored in his first 3 league games.. Wasn't he the first player for us to do so? He might not be world class, but clearly confidence plays a part and he is going through a really low point right now.. he is better than this.. (ie, he isnt useless)

We cant keep waiting for players who cant stand the pressure or the attention, so I'm fine with him leaving, but he isnt as bad as some are making him out to be..
hopefully he can put together some good performances and get a decent move..

or.. very unlikely, but maybe recover his career here.

Why assume it had nothing to do with him? If Antony was way above the club's valuation, surely they would have gone back to the manager to suggest alternatives? EtH pushed for the signing to be made so he's just as culpable, if not more culpable than anyone else.
