Sometimes I think €100m is a cursed transfer fee. There’s probably more flops than successes when that amount changes hands.

There definitely are. There was an article or something posted a while back that listed out all of the transfers that were 100 million and up, and most of them were flops.

Will be looked back on as one of the worst signings for ETH era (due to the price).

He's at best a £37M development project like Gapko. Maybe an extra £5M cause there aren't as many Inverted RW.

Oh feck off! What a ridiculous statement to make!

I really fecking hope he makes you eat your words so you don't come on this site and post such bullshit again!

He plays for our team, support him and hope he comes good. I'm fecking sick of this habit amongst our own fanbase that insists on shitting on our own players, it's ridiculous.

The guy had an average game tonight and missed a sitter in the second half but do we really need a pile on for another player?
For a site of United supporters, allegedly, more time is spent slagging off players, Rashford, Martial, Bruno, De Gea, Sancho, Maguire, Lindelof etc, etc.
Overall Anthonys performances have been decent but he throws in one that's a bit off in a 3-0 victory and he should be dropped/ sent to Holland?
Try being a supporter and not a critic for once. All this knee jerk stuff is nonsense and toxic.
Depends what the pile on is in relation to, in my opinion.

If it's just calling out the performance for what it was, i.e. a steaming pile of shite, there's nothing wrong with that. That's what a performance thread is for. You can't really dress up tonight. The players have to have accountability for performance.

But yes, I don't like the very quick overall judgements on the player.

He deserves criticism for his performance this evening. Doesn't mean he's a bad player for United, I think he's performed decently he doesn't look a level behind when the full first 11 is out, he was sound against Chelsea so it probably is a lack of sharpness.

I have said it numerous times on this thread this season.... I'm willing to give him a season before I fully committ either way but so far I have not been very impressed at all. He's got to start creating chances for players and he never does.

14 appearances and 0 assists for a wide player playing in a front 3 is quite concerning.

Needs to start producing soon or he won't even be starting with Garnacho around.

Well, when you spend it on a €35m player you know you're going to get it wrong more than right.

Still puzzles me this signing. As much fun as we have with Darwin I think this one was far worse.

We could see his stats were awful, and we could see his attitude was awful, and yet he was signed.

Makes you wonder if ETH even had a second "outside" opinion on him or just went along with it being smitten.

He could come good, but it's certainly an uphill battle. Give him till end of season, then (miracle aside) try to scam some other club.

Worst starter tonight by a mile. Wasted huge chance with a poor left foot shot straight at the keeper after Rashford had found Fernandes with a super pass. Ruined decent counter attacking opportunities with poor passes. Gave the ball straight to a Forest player for one of their rare first half attacks.

Total opposite of Casemiros perfomance tonight. Got pretty much everything wrong.

Will give him time though, there is a player in there.

Thought he was one of the worst players out there, but he’s still very valuable to the team.

The only niggling issue I have is that it doesn’t feel like he excels at anything. He’s got great ball control and technique but he’s not going to take a bunch of men on, he’s not a lethal finisher, and he’s not quite the passer/creator you’d hope given the first two.

Strange player, because I enjoy watching him and he’s certainly important to our team makeup.

Does he really have no assists this season? That more than anything is the most frustrating part of his game. He's very good at keeping possession but when its time for a final pass be it a cross or through ball he always fecks it up.

I've also realised why there was a lot of debate about his pace earlier in the season. He's actually pretty fast but he must have the worst technique of running with the ball, its actually terrible. Watch him closely and you'll see the ball go behind him when he runs with it, so this is why he seems to slow down because he's ahead of the ball. Compare it to Garnacho who is excellent at running with the ball, the ball always stays in front of him when running full pelt.

Antony has so much coaching and development to go through. That's batshit crazy for a player with his price tag but I think we need to come to the reality that he's a couple of seasons away from being ready.

Poor this evening, I think he has been ok so far though considering he is only a few games in to hi scareer here, new culture, came later than most, not much time and off again to the world cup etc etc.

Knew little about him before he arrived. Unlike others I didnt find anythign particularly exciting in his youtube videos personally.

He definately looks over priced, but at the same time I think there is loads of ability and potential in him that needs to be harnessed the right way

Absolutely dire performance. Worst player on the pitch by a country mile. Locked in a fierce competition with Nunez and Grealish who will be the worst 100M signing. And so far he is ahead by circumstance. He has to get better. And soon.

In danger of becoming another of our players to fall to pieces mentally. His first few matches were full of confidence. Now he looks like he’s a couple of weeks away from joining Sancho.

No it’s not far worse, and his attitude is fantastic I have no clue what you’re on about.

I laughed at the muppets in the summer who were drooling all over his youtube highlight reels saying we needed him at any cost. Anyone who watched him properly at ajax knows he's inconsistent and you get these frustrating performances. They're more pronounced now because he's in a tougher league.

Never in any multiverse was Antony worth 100 million. Should have walked away when they upped the price as there are a whole load of better wingers with just as much potential

What we can hope for at best is that he becomes more consistent and solid player. I'd say his ceiling is becoming a valencia type reliant winger who can be a threat and whip in regular goal opportunity crosses, but that is being hopeful

jesus I wonder if I watch the same sport as some of you sometimes. Antony was awful tonight, but the glee with which people go to find their new scapegoat is terrifying. This fanbase is in a very weird place post-Fergie.

To be fair, he's barely played recently so you could probably let him off for that wild performance. Hopefully, he'll be back at it this weekend.

His lack of right foot is a big issue. Even on the rare occasions he does go on the outside, he always chops back onto his left foot and doesn't get the ball into the box quickly (or gets tackled in the process). Otherwise it's him trying a hollywood ball on his left foot from far too deep.

It seems a lot of posters over the last two pages before today's game had problems understanding the criticism Antony was receiving. Hopefully today's performance can open some eyes.

Not saying he has no chance here but I'm yet to see a player that gives indication that he can be top class in this league. His offensive game has so many flaws in my opinion. We were definitely ripped off and most of us knew that already but my bigger issue is his skillset.

In saying that he still has time on his side.
I really think those posters do not watch the games but just live for the transfer period and get hyped up watching YouTube clips of players in other leagues.

That's the mental thing. Those YouTube clips were so underwhelming. I've seen many a YouTube troll - Antony wasn't one. Everything about him just shouted meh.

Him and Sancho are worth half their fees at best. Got fleeced, both are not there yet and need a lot of work.

And people still don't learn crying over Gakpo after getting shafted by Antony. Not everything ETH touches turns to gold

Still early days for Antony but he does look unimpressive and was very poor today. Hopefully he can improve in the second half of the season. It is a real worry that ETH was willing to pay 85m for a player who he nurtured at Ajax and knows very well but has had limited impact.

I hope he is not another "VDB like" purchase (by the way VDB was actually decent today). Any way he needs more time for sure as fancy footwork without thinking (football IQ) is not going to scare PL defenders.

I like Antony but I'm concerned by his crossing, they don't seem to have any direction and are a bit tame (Could just be me)

The problem is, defenders in the PL are obviously better than those in the Netherland. They know by know that he's always coming back to his left side to they're pushing him in this direction, meaning that when he crosses, it's almost a vertical pass, and those are very hard to catch for any attacker, especially with an inside spin. He absolutely NEEDS to start wide and balance his game with deep runs otherwise he's going to be a piece of cake to silent for defenses. He's no Robben, or Di Maria, he can't afford to be that predictable.

If he scored it would have absolved some of the performance tonight but unfortunately he missed it. So ya he was shit tonight

Twitter is calling him 21 average you know. Hope he comes good for us. Our luck with big signings has to turn sometime, right?

I don't think there is anything wrong with people looking for him to step up more , he was poor tonight and needs to offer more but also far too early to be writing him off. This is a test of his character now, when you are at a club like United you need to deal with been under the spotlight and be strong enough to come back from setbacks.

ETH has not got much wrong yet and he thinks this lad is good enough , hopefully we will start to see that soon.

He’s been a bit hit and miss, but he’s also shown his attributes. He’s got a great left foot, has very good close control, can dribble pretty well, although I am expecting more on that last bit. He was labelled as slow, but he is clearly rapid. I think he has all the attributes and the mentality to succeed. He needs time.
Bingo, well said.

I disagree. I’ve seen United play since 1980. For every Cantona there is a Büttner. For every Keane there are five Michael Cleggs. The average United player has never scored three goals in his first three starts.

We need to let that close to meaningless stat go at one point, is a player that scores in his first three starts better than a player who doesn't but scores 6 goals in the next 10 games?
