Couldn't care less about what the media says, he seems confident enough to take whatever comes his way. It's good to have a player who draws attention since the rest of the team seems quite timid.
My concern is about opposition trying to kick the shite out of him.

Totally agree! Nice to se a player who is not afraid of attention. Absolutely love the fella.

It's easy to enjoy it now because we won, but it'd be a different story if we hadn't.
How? It was a couple of seconds of a 90min game. No one outside of England cares, if he kept doing it I get it but once is such a random thing to make such a big deal of. We have this weird idea of skills and expression being deplorable because of the dinosaurs we have commentating our games - Antony doing a slightly pointless pirouette on the ball which took, what, 3 seconds and then misplacing a pass is about as relevant to the result as a player making a bad touch or a keeper taking a bad goal kick. It’s inconsequential.

Massive overreaction from the pundits as usual. Robbie Savage is just embarrassing. To be honest his pass wasn’t that bad. You could say if Casimero had been quicker it could have been inspired skill to distract and a brilliant pass.

Rubbish showboating but who cares.

Fuming I've even posted about it.
We deserve our current situation with the fans we have. No memory at all.

Scholes wouldn't make any fecking needless move to showboat, he would put a long ball for the strikers to score, yet this guy can't even put a simple pass and can't take on a man.

But wait, he can turn with the ball at his feet.

More Scholeses and less Antonys please.
I don't mind it as such, do a little trick if you like.

But does it have to he so naff?
The showboating would have looked a lot better if he actually brought something more to the game. Pundit reaction is over the top, no surprises there. The entire thing was just bizarre and unnecessary. Whatever, moving on.
Scholes was spot on about that 'Skill' tonight , it added nothing , had no real function and is not really a skill. You could see ETH was not impressed by it either
I think it's simply stupid and embarrassing. Almost all trickery has some purpose. Standing alone and just circling to show ball control when it has no purpose......
I love watching players do awesome tricks during practice but in the game where you play against much weaker team.....
I thought it was a bit silly.

Was pretty stupid and random given it was still 0 0
Look at the state of some of these posts   . Absolute dullards whose lives have been turned upside down just like British pundits’s by that one harmless move from Antony. Bloody hell.

If Ronaldinho had done it, Robbie Savage would think it was the best thing ever

Keep spinning just to piss off the joyless feckers.
I swear, you'd think he'd refused to come on as a sub and left the game by some of the pundits comments.

Must say, I was a big advocate of his in the summer. I first watched him properly in the Olympics last year and thought he was breathtaking. That said, not sure really, he looks kinda dead to me. Well, not dead, but not what we need either. I know it’s always new player positivity - but I’m not willing to sweep his inability to go past a full back or to use new age geek lingo ‘progressive carry’ the ball under the carpet. It severely hinders us in the final third, and we are one-dimensional and slow there as it is and struggle to break teams down.

I only said as tricks go its a bit rubbish. No problem with showboating in general.

Not sure how that means my entire life has been turned upside down. Bit overly dramatic from you

I don't see the problem. It was just harmless showboat.
If the pass had been on point or better yet Sheriff player had decided to two footed tackle Anthony then we would have something to talk about.

Scholes seems to forget young Ronaldo had shit ton of useless tricks in his bag too.

I thought the spin was meant to make the opposition lose concentration? Like "look at this dickhead showboating" and then bam, through ball attempt to someone (Casemiro I think)

The game must have been really boring for neutrals to see so much commentary about Antony doing a trick. Honestly, who cares? Its not a big deal.

100mil fidget spinner. To be fair though, he can do whatever he wants if the opponent doesn’t want to close him down.

Grew up watching Ronaldinho, am sure Antony did too.....football needs this!!

For the record, with this being the caf, the above views bear no relation to any trick attempted against Sherriff!

Not your life mate, not yours. I said the state of some of the posts. Yours was mild compared to others. :D

:D Exactly. Ronaldo does that and pundits are all defending him. Antony spins twice in 3 seconds and he should be taken out of the first team

People are allowed to dislike things you know,

Plus at least half the posts you quoted are hardly that damning about it either.... almost like you had your own narrative you wanted to make?

My kids enjoyed it and they are the future fans.

Pogbas haircuts
Antony spins

kids lap it up, who cares about the old miserable farts who just love to whine

My biggest concern is that he has to take his first touch on his left foot. Whenever a cross field ball is hit to him, he can't take it in his stride because he refuses to use his right

That’s why I said some of these posts. And yes they were damning about one skill from our player. You want to dislike it? Fine if you can’t see the ridiculousness of disliking it.

i hope he does it again if this many people get wound up by it.

I liked ETH's comment that he expects so much more from him. He pushes him hard and he'll only get better.

I don't mind flair or showboating, but you should do it when you have a decent lead. Otherwise it is time waisting

I personally would prefer a piece of elaborate skill that goes past a player - that's just my personal preference. Unless you're upset that I have a personal preference?

Also the fact that he lost the ball immediately after made the whole thing look a bit silly - which is what my original point was.... but then as I also said, it's not the end of the world or anything.

He's had such a good start and it got the price tag vultures off his back, but this will have got the 'pundits' circling.

I think you should be allowed to do whatever skills you want on a pitch, but yes ideally functional ones. Taking the piss is fine (if you're winning) imo, and no different to winding players up other ways (shouting in their face after scoring, pinching them, etc...).

However it was probably best for him not to do that due to the attention it brings. It shouldn't bring attention, but it does. It's like having to get a taxi home when it's dark to avoid trouble. You shouldn't have to on principle but it's just easier if you do.

Same.

Said this before but being one footed isn't just about shooting and crossing. It's the little touches with your weak foot that get your body in the right position or shape. His whole game is incredibly left sided.

He sometimes slows the game down because if its too congested to cut inside he has no options but to stop. Going on the outside of his fullback isn't even considered because he wants to go left.

I like him but he needs to sort that out. I don't think its even that hard to change. More a mentality thing than actually having to spend hours practicing with his right.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not blaming you for not liking it or disliking it infact after seeing your initial post again I must admit it was fine but the pile up on Antony for that one single harmless skill has been so over the top by some people that I was surprised to see so many posts on that.

Cristiano was doing stupid shit 15 years ago and it didn't seem to be a problem, the crowd actually cheered him.

Now, Antony does one skill and it's an issue. feck these pussy ass fake football loving pundits, the feck is wrong with them?

Yeah exactly and I think it's a bigger problem because he's on the right.

Maybe he's another winger who's better on the left :wenger:

Didn’t catch the game, but the skill being talked about, is it not the same he did vs Chelsea (or possibly Everton)?

No mention of it from anyone then.

Media yet again stirring drama about a whole lot of nothing.

Had it been Phil Foden doing that helicopter skill under no pressure they'd been creaming themselves.

"I don't have a problem with that [trademark spin by Antony on the ball] as long as it's functional. So, also from him, I demand more. More runs behind, more often in the box, more followings in, and more tempo dribbles especially. And more playing in the pocket. So we demand more dominance in this game and, now and then, there is a trick like this, it's nice, as long as it's functional, as he's not losing the ball, as he's attracting players, then it's okay. But if it's a trick, because of a trick then I will correct him."

Good comments by ETH, yes.

Yeah, they annoyed me, I wanted Antony to keep fecking spinning just to annoy the cnuts.

His crossing was his best attribute at Ajax though.
It was literally the thing most highlighted in all videos of him though.

Really? That would surprise me, but can’t comment on it, because I haven’t seen any of his highlight videos (no need to when you see him play every week).
In my experience from watching full matches, I remember him having to cut inside to his left foot before crossing, which takes away the element of surprise and giving the opponent the chance to regroup in the box. Then what would follow most of the time is a chipped cross, without any real curve/tenacity to it.

I would definitely not say crossing is one if his strenghts. What I would say is a big strenght of his is receiving the ball out wide, taking on his defender with his left foot and creating the space/opportunity for either a shot, or a killer through ball, setting up a team mate with a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. For me, that is signature Antony.

btw on the double spin: needless, but entertaining. That’s what you get with him. Hopefully he keeps that element in his play, because other times the skill will be more impressive and functional.
