I think he can put in any kind of cross its just that he prefers to stick to pinpointing a player in the box. Young when on form puts in almost nothing but in swinging crosses so it will even itself out.

I don't even think he's pinpointing a player in the box atm. Sometimes he fizzes it in with someone in mind, but so far atm he just seems to want to fizz it across the box and hope, which is fine, but problem is, if he can't work himself in to that position he won't try and float one in, he'll just play it back or for the corner.

He is clearly focusing too hard on finding someone, why do you think he keeps stopping and staring into the box before putting a cross in, he needs to start trusting his instincts.

His hesitation is effecting the strikers too, how can they make the runs when they have no idea the ball is coming in?. Rvn was getting annoyed with ronaldo because he did so many step overs he never knew when the ball was coming, he would be pulling his hair out with Valencia.

I don't think that, I think he's lacking confidence to take on his man for some reason and that he's trying to get in a position to fizz it across but can't cause he won't take on the fullback. If he was trying to pick someone out he could at least attempt to float a ball towards someone but he's not, it's pretty much fizz or nothing. Most the time he has his head down as well.

I understand that when everyone's fit, Valencia should sometimes start on the bench, maybe Ferguson is more happy with off form Valencia than off form Nani - better defensively, understanding with Rafael, an option as a right-back etc.

What did you expect yesterday? Welbeck on the wing? And then read "why is Welbeck playing there when he's not a winger"?

In last two games his defensive workrate is awfull too, Garrido was overlapping yesterday in their every attack and created two or three great chances for them, Valencia rarely tracked him back.

I don't agree with a single word you have said here

Well, Young looked far more effective on the right, maybe we should rest Valencia for a while and try out Young. I'm not sure that is the case either, Valencia yesterday had no saving grace be it in defence or attack.

Yesterday we were at our best on the wings with Giggs out left and Young on the right. I think we will use Nani as soon as he is fit though, even when this badly off form he offers more.

I can't see SAF dropping Valencia though. He has had no issues dropping other players through shit form this season (Rooney included) but he insists time and time again on playing Valencia despite him being quite awful bar one or two games.

We should be using 3 in midfield and sacrificing the wingers, like we did a while ago.

(the foot thing was a joke by the way)

Seems to be suffering from a lack of confidence a la Ashley Young.

Yeah, the goal for one.

Why do you think that is?

Probably because he was so effective last season, bought himself a bit of leeway.

He's been dropped before in the midst of great form, so I think SAF will drop him again if if it's the right thing to do given how bad he has been recently.

Yeah true but in terms of who is likely to be replaced it's surely Young over Valencia. When Nani is fit he deserves a chance to start as niether Young or Val are performing anywhere close to good enough. As I said before, if it's one of those two who should be dropped then I reckon Ferguson will choose Young as Valencia was so good last season he has earned more of an opportunity to play his way into form.

That's another thing that's been off actually. In the past you could always be sure that no matter how poor he was going forward he'd put in a good shift and work his bollocks off, but I just haven't seen that in the last couple of games. Rafael has been left alone with two players more than a few times with Valencia strolling around half way up the pitch.

As I see it, any player is better than Valencia off form. He's horribly one-dimensional (i.e. use speed to get past man and cross the box) and when he's lacking confidence (or whatever it is) he's offering nothing at all. It'd be better to play Welbeck out there as he can at least pull inside and contribute to the short-passing with flicks and such. Valencia just gets the ball and stands there with it on current form.

I might be a bit harsh on Valencia, but watching him play a game like yesterday is incredibly frustrating. I'd much rather see Nani at least trying something and failing than Valencia trying nothing and still somehow failing.

Ye Wowi, Valencia was nowhere to be found when I believe it was Johnson crossed the ball to Pilkington

EDIT: Garrido not Johnson. Thanks kouroux

The play before that was a warning as well, someone played a 1-2 past carrick and Rafael had to tuck in to prevent the player a clear run on goal. As soon as Rafael tucked in the pass went out to unmarked Garrido who luckily put in a poorish cross.

He's playing like Nani used to play when he first joined up. Trying to be perfect every time.

It's either that or he's gotten bored of beating his man and putting crosses in. Which to be fair has to be taken into account as a possibility when you're talking about someone who has shown he can do it almost at will. After about the five-hundredth time that's got to get as boring as licking stamps.

He did beat his man quite often against Norwich but instead of putting in a cross he used to stop, turn back and pass it to Rafael.
I can remember the last time he put in a cross that he didnt try to smash across the penalty area.
Young put in more crosses in 20 mins then Valancia has done in 5 games i think.

Depends on the glue...

Heh the first post in this thread shows he goes through ups and downs. Only a matter of time until he gets back to his best. The dilemma is whether he need a rest or whether he need to be played into form. I assume Fergie and his staff think he needs to keep playing in order to get back his form.

He was shite last season until about mid-november, when he decided to basically rape any opposing full back dumb enough to give any resistance.

He can still get past his man with relative ease, it's his decision making and execution (or lack there of) that's the problem.
He either decides to stand like a statue for 5 seconds or delivers a cross that is nowhere near where it's supposed to be. Last year he was excellent regarding his crosses in the box, and made more runs inside as well. Like I said, he still beats his man without too much trouble, so it's not like he's completely lost it, just seriously surprised by his crosses and stand-still moments.

Somebody get him a fecking camera

BBC Sport's Howard Nurse at Old Trafford on Twitter: "Antonio Valencia missed Manchester United's win over QPR because of a sore hip which has been bothering him for a couple of weeks."

Hopefully this is what has been causing him to look so poor and a couple of weeks rest will get him going again.

Antonio Valencia missed the victory against Queens Park Rangers due to a hip problem.

The Ecuador winger could also be forced to sit out the visit of another London side, Sam Allardyce's West Ham, on Wednesday night in the Reds' next Barclays Premier League assignment.

"He had a hip injury," the boss revealed to MUTV. "Just towards his back.

"He's had a bit of pain there for the last couple of weeks but he's been playing with it. That's the type of guy he is. He never mentioned it and plays on.

"All of a sudden, you ask him and he says: 'Yes, it's sore.'

"It won't be too long and he should be ready for maybe next week."
