Amazing what running at your man can do. Phelan should just stand on the touch line shouting "run! run!" every time he's facing his man.

Really don't know what the issue is with him atm, he just seems unwilling to take people on in one on one situations and atm is relying on rafael a lot in an attacking capacity. I'm not sure if some teams have figured him out or if it's confidence or both, but he's just not doing enough over a whole game. He's still produced here and there but at the end of the day given how much of the ball he see's you'd expect him to pick up the assists even without playing well, but that doesn't take away from the fact that he's not being productive enough.

To be fair to him though most players when out of form aren't expected to continually still be the main supply. We really do rely on that wide ball too often, we need to introduce more variety to the attack as we did in the second half.

Definitely better in the second half, a few nice contributions including the run at the end. His crossing was a nightmare today though

Yeah, not a great first half, but he was our only attacking option, and it wasn't like he had anyone to play with. And as Sir Alex correctly surmised, the problem was on the left side and in midfield. Much better second half as well. Hopefully it will lift his lagging confidence.

was much better in the second half only because villa was attacking and there was more space for him to operate.

Still hopelessly ineffective when teams play defensively and defend deep like villa did. Can be used for big games like park was but in these kind of games, should never start over Nani

Awful today. Pissing me off now. No confidence at all. All our wingers have been fecking shite this season.

His crossing is dramatic at the moment. Never a lack of effort, but please Valencia, rediscover your old attacking form.

His crossing is the most frustrating thing atm and his unwillingness to take on players. Seems totally out of confidence.

True and I thought before the start of the season that we have too many wingers

Really I can't trust any of the 3

Just have to wonder if playing at right back have properly screwed him over mentally

Got better as the game got on.. Not at his best at the moment.. will get better.. We know he is capable of a lot more.

He was horrible, absolutely horrible.

But that's the thing with Valencia. He's a good player but he IS one-dimensional so when he's off form he's just horrible to watch because he keeps doing the same thing poorly again and again.

The problem is that he doesn't cross, he doesn't apply the "normal" technique to cross. He just hits the ball very hard towards certain areas of the box.Sometimes it can work beautifully and sometimes like tonight it can be bad.
Most importantly tonight he wasn't creating space for himself to drill his crosses. That's why he was so predictable

Worst player out there today. He didn't have one good cross all game, and considering that's what his game is all about it's quite frankly woeful. Almost cost us at the end too with giving the ball away in our own half when trying to go past a man (Who done that a couple of weeks ago...)

Not his best game but occupied 3 players at times. We need Rooney back on the other flank to ease the burden.

He had one run towards the end that was brilliant. The Valencia we know, where he just breezed past three players, but for most of the match he was a shadow of himself.

i only saw the second half, he did look ok to me.

Indeed, he was good in the second half. Made a mockery of the idea that passing backwards is negative...it created countless chances, picking out players in loads of space just outside the box and that led to Rooney, Van Persie and Rafael linking up nicely a few times. Picked out some great passes to Rooney and Van Persie just inside the box too.

Shocking first half though, playing him at right back could be part of the problem actually given it coincided with Valencia's worst form in his United career early last year.

Then he lost the ball 20 yards outside our box in the 92nd minute, when Villa were piling on pressure.

Moaning at half-time is always funny.

And people are thick.

It's either a hammered low cross or an ineffective clip that has no pace on it.

Yeah that's probably the biggest issue atm with him. If he can't get to the byline to drill it then he just turns back. It keeps possession but it kills momentum. Picking out someone with a lofted ball is either something he doesn't want to do or isn't confident with and then he doesn't offer much variety coming inside. Not terrible or anything but this has been going on for a sustained period now.

Tends to struggle during tight games but when the space starts to appear, he's devastating.

Terrible first half but thought he did OK in the last 30 mins.
