I was just glad to see him finally make an attempt to take on the LB instead of getting into good positions and then freezing like a deer caught in headlights.
Crossing wasnt as good as it could have been but there are signs of improvement finally..

At United there is a very high standard for wingers due to the players that have been here i.e. Kanchelskis, Beckham, Giggs, Ronaldo, Nani etc. and when the player playing on teh wing doesn't match up it can get very frustrating for the fans cause it's not what we've come to expect.

Valencia was quite terrible I thought, atleast he put in a good cross for Hernandez's header and set up RVP's goal.

The match was very open, and he actually got a chance to run one vs one at the fullback a couple of times, which he is very good at. It's when they double up that he becomes rendered useless, and his one footed-ness means he becomes completely predictable compared to someone like Nani/Giggs.

He'll be fine in matches with a combination of anyone of Anderson/Cleverley/Kagawa/Rooney whereby the space that he is creating by stretching the opposition is exploited.

There were some signs of the real Valencia in the second half, albeit they were quite brief.

His cross to Hernandez was an absolute peach though... it's ashame that didn't find the back of the net, I reckon Valencia would have gained a world of confidence from it.

I thought in the 2nd half he played alright. He took men on more even though Newcastle continued to double up on him. Put in a couple of good crosses too, hopefully he can build on it.

Is there any footage flying around of his challenge in stoppage time? I didn't notice it at the time.

High standard is an understatement. We're the club that is world-reknowned in the modern game for Wing-play.. only the best wingers in the world should play for us. Magicians out wide... that's how we roll, watching Tony V at the moment is painful, regardless of his form issue.. I still think we should be possessing a higher calibre of wide player on both wings regardless.

He forgot he hasn't been in form for that cross. That was the old Valencia, got ball, swift correct action without thinking. Should have been a goal.

I think this more than anything has to do with Valencia's fall in form. He constantly has two defenders on him out on the wing. Opposing managers have adjusted. They are not stupid. They have watched him previously as a serial rapist of left backs and have made the necessary changes and have constantly double teamed him. It's obviously frustrated him and has affected his form, but credit must be given to the tactics of opposing sides. I mean you can't just sit there and watch this guy kill your left backs and do nothing. So many times Valencia looks bad cause he isn't able to take on a double team and he must hold the ball up. This isn't rocket science. I think much of the criticism has been unfair such as whining punters demanding he change his style when it's the same awkward right footedness that got him to be a top player at Manchester United. I mean, listen to the bollocks he's critisized for even when he does make a picture perfect cross spot on to Hernandez:

It would have been a miracle had he fecked up that cross. He had so much time and space.

Give the guy a break, for feck's sakes. He also put in a beautiful cross to RVP that led to the sequence of his goal. This seems to be typical though of how Valencia is becoming judged now. Very very harsh.

The guy is obviously going through a rough spell with the new tactics being employed, but it's up to Ferguson to make some adjustments as well to see if he can free up some more space from the constant double teaming, or to use it to an advantage of freeing up other players. I could imagine Ferguson would tell most these Valencia detractors to feck off.

So by your logic noone should ever screw up a penalty or free kick.

And noone who has space should ever be able to missplace a pass either.

His second half performance was an improvement on his last few performances, that's for sure. Long may he continue to improve from here and get back to the level of last season.

No, going by my logic Valencia even when playing as bad as he has been should be able to execute an easy cross once in a while. If you try something ten times in a game it's bound to come off at least once.

That wasn't a particularly easy cross though, it was a brilliant delivery with pace on it as well. Hernandez was his only target in the box.

I don't buy into this double teaming-thing, he's so slow on the ball at the moment. In-form Valencia would go on the inside and play a one-two with a striker or pass the ball quickly into the feet of a striker or a midfielder to continue the attack. But nowadays he seem to just have his usual staring contest with the opponent, spin around the play the ball back to Ferdinand.

It was not a difficult cross, for a professional footballer anyway. Much better compared to some of the Bebe style crossing horror shows he has been having recently, but he needs to do much more. If a couple of decent crosses means he had a good game then standards are at an all time low with this guy. He was devastating at times last season, and this season he has looked a shadow of that player. I'm perplexed to why he has kept his place in the side, especially with Fergie's one mistake and your out policy.

The staring at the defender thing is what's most frustrating. Just kills the attack, the momentum and the players in the box stand there waiting for Valencia only to pass it backwards because he has no variety to his game right now.

He's always had that staring thing going, but before it was usually with one defender.

So no one thinks teams are changing tactics on him? I think it would be ridiculous for a Premier League manager to not, considering what he was doing last year. That's what managers do. It just always seems he receives the ball out on the right and now there's two defenders on him when he starts to make a run and it severely limits his possibilities and slowing him down. You can see his frustration mounting, and it's obviously affecting his play. I think it's up to Ferguson and Phelan to change some tactics. But at the end of the day, we're 7 points clear of a very difficult league, first of our group in the PL, scoring a lot of goals, so it isn't very perplexing to imagine why he has kept his place and Ferguson's seemingly maddening team choices can be rightfully defended and some slack should be cut.

Do you think after about two whole seasons of raping managers thought to themselves "hey wait a minute that Valencia-man is quite good we should double mark him and don't give a shit about RVP or Rooney", and that's the sole reason for his lacklustre performances?

Valencia's been double teamed numerous times before. When he's on form it doesn't matter, he'll find another way round, or take on one of the guys then play in the overlapping full-back or play a one-two.

Of course, when refusing to run with the ball or try and go past your man, instead opting for a staring contest that lasts for about 7 seconds, it's not very difficult to mark you out of the game.

For me it's all down to confidence. He had a period like this at the start of last season as well, but then he suddenly went into raping mode again.

Like playing with 10 men every week. Wish he'd feck off somewhere else at this stage. Though if we tried to sell him, I'm sure he'd just stand still without signing the contract until the other club didn't want him anymore.

Relax, going through a bad spell. If you sell every player that happens to we'll just be left with RVP

Pathetic post.

He really does play like Bebe right now. No technique, just blasts the ball and hopes for the best when he crosses.

Pathetic username. Shark22? What the feck were you thinking? Sharks are hardly known for their wit and you don't even rank yourself in the top 20.

Sure Valencia is a hindrance right now, but to simply sell him because he's going through a bad patch is ridiculous.
I'm not buying the "one trick pony" excuse, he plays in the middle for Ecuador and does it very well when on form.

I will agree that he's not contributing to a great standard lately, but to sell him?
Bah!

Must be dropped until he returns to his normal self. Slows down attacks too often as he is indecisive what to do and his crosses are pointless in this form.

With Kagawa back, there's no reason to keep playing Tony in this form.

Again, pathetic post.

Swim along Sharkboy, I'm not falling for you bait - you're just fishing for a reaction here. Not gonna happen, been around this plaice far too long to fall for it - I can sea exactly what you're up to. Keep it up though, salmon else might fall for it.

He definitely needs to be dropped, there's no doubt about that. His confidence and technique seems to be shattered right now.

He just seems to take a age to do anything, so many times he would be in a crossing position only to check back and pass the ball to Smalling. One of my fav players but since his last injury he just hasnt been the same, maybe hes still carrying a knock?

I thought again there were some decent signs from him but was still quite frustrating at times. The amount of times the ball gets worked out to him 1 on 1 with his full back and we have 3-4 players in the box and the ball doesn't come in is amazing. Still looks like he's picking up somewhat and tbf he's played a lot of games, he, evra and Carrick really are due a rest soon.
