Antonio Rüdiger

Another mercenary looking for one last payday. Must be desperate if he's resorting to using us.

He's been great for us in the last 15 months or so.

He's the type of physicality and aggression this soft side needs but probably not the right player.

I think if Ten Hag does want a centre back it will be a left footer.

What makes him a mercenary? Due to the current ownership Chelsea cannot offer him a new contract if i am not mistaken.
I‘d gladly pay him €12m per year on a four year contract if he fits what my manager wants to do

Every footballer is a mercenary. It's not like he grew up in Berlin with pictures of Dennis Wise and Graeme Le Saux on his wall.

The issue is his motivation levels and hunger for further success, that's always in doubt with a player who is looking for his last big contract and has already won most of the big trophies at club level.

What's the difference between what David Alaba did going to Madrid on a free and what Rudiger is doing?

I'd love both at the club if they perform like they do now over our defenders.

Pretty sure Maguire's salary isn't too far off what they are wanting either

This does not match RR’s views on finding hungry players ready to take the next step. This would be more like an old Woodward special. Don’t want it to happen for that reason.

We have too many positions to fill. Players on a free or on one year contracts will be interesting for us, as the fees will be low and we can save some funds for other positions.

Yeah but he just becomes a problem on the wage bill then...like Sanchez and Cavani and even now Varane by the looks of it. Then you get the young defenders playing well threatening not to renew unless they get paid close to the main man. These types of signings raise the stakes for the rest of the squad. Ronny was somewhat worth the risk. I’d prefer if he was the last.

One of the top CBs In the prem.

Yet united fans find fault. But still champion Rashford, martial and Pogba hahahaha brilliant

His wages would be through the roof. Although I feel he and Dembouz would be great free transfers, I can see us signing them without them being amongst pur highest earners.

I’ve been listening to Rio’s podcasts a lot and one thing both him and Anton keep harping on about is the communication and organization - which obviously we lack at the moment.

I know it’s different systems (2 at the back and 3 at the back) but if I remember correctly, Rudiger only started being the player he is now, since Thiago Silva came in. He’s known to be an excellent organizer and reader - so could it be that he is performing now due to Silva, as opposed to just being in a back 3? Pure question, I don’t watch them enough to back my claims

Rudiger was good under Conte years ago. His only real blip was when Lampard was coach.

Yeah my only concerns is the seeming inflexibility to be able to play in both a back 3 and 4, also the wages but like you say I don't see hi m being amongst our highest earners anyway.

It's probably go like Matic. A good competent player who descends into the midst of mediocrity results in a physical and mental checkout.

Wouldn't complain - United need to shop in the bargain section. Top tier fees has yielded little success thus far.

Spot on. As talented as they can be, a team based around these types of waining superstars will never work for us.

Sign exciting young players with winning mentalities and supplement them with a couple of older leaders, it's the only way out of this perennial rutt we've found ourselves in.

There is no problem for players looking for last big pay check, as long as they have the professionalism like CR7 and give their best every game. Just take a look at Thiago Silva for Chelsea, it is a huge success for them.

A CB of his ilk/quality would've easily cost us £60m in transfer fee alone. A fat signing bonus £10-15m with £200k a week wages wouldn't have been bad. Well, doesn't matter by looks of it as Madrid have agreement with him.

We should be really active around the players who are seemed surplus at the top clubs or about to move on a free. We never seem to get involved while clubs like Madrid/Bayern/Juve even PSG end up making these shrewd pick ups at bargain prices.

A couple of ITKs say there was a meeting scheduled for January, but shortly before that he/his agent raised their demands, Madrid refused and they didn't show up for the meeting. Supposedly, Madrid did not like that attitude and did not contact him again until recently when his agent apparently called again, lowering his requests.
Seeing it from the outside, as a fan, I don't like that kind of thing, although on the other hand I fell in love with him in the Champions League match

Alaba, Militão, Rudiger would be enviable CB options.

Can definitely see Alaba splitting time back at LB with Mendy if that happens given Mendy's recent injury history.

Having Militão or Alaba as your 3rd CB instead of Nacho would be a big upgrade

It's been cool to watch him play for us. Wish him all the best. I don't feel anything particular towards him.

Don't really get it. He'll be moving to be a starter and Militao and Alaba have been fine so who misses out?

Nothing wrong with having 3 strong options. There's definitely a lot of scope to ensure they all get around 25+ games each. Will come down to performances to see who they trust the most.

2 main examples being:
Matip, Van Dik and Konate
Dias, Laporte and Stones

Seen this potential lineup being floated

Honestly could work quite well, decent balance in all areas. That's one of the luxuries of having a Swiss army knife type of player like Alaba, he can play at LB, CB, CM/LM or holding mid effectively if required.

Rudiger has played almost all of his 3atb games for us at LCB. Seems like a very different dynamic to play RCB.

It seems strange that they suddenly start playing with 3 in the back to fit a player. I see more realistic to move Alaba to the LB and maybe sell Mendy

It will be more sensible to switch Alaba & Mendy's positions as Mendy never played in any CB role IIRC.

A backup? Seriously ? he’s not going anywhere to be a backup.

He can't ask to be guaranteed starter for RM. Alaba+Militao partnership has been very good this season. I can't imagine it will be broken that easily.
Rüdiger can be a backup and might break into playing 11. Marcelo contract expires, so Alaba might share left back position with Mendy.

Who knows how things will play out, but it's really nice to get a player like Rüdiger into our squad. Great upgrade over Nacho who has regressed slightly recently. Nacho moves to be 4th option and Vallejo is moved on.

not sure about the formation but Madrid well on the way to showing how easy a rebuild can be

This is one way to hide our mediocre backs. Carvajal, Vasquez, Mendy and Marcelo has all been very ordinary.

I would rather buy another midfielder. Grandpa Modric can't continue forever. This team is too defensive for a RM team. Alaba, Casemiro, Militao, Rudiger, Velverde and Mendy... Too many defensive minded players.

Levi Colwill might find a timely opening in preseason now. Blessing in disguise and all that.
