Becuase adding a WC player to bring us the Goals and assists we need to take it up a level means we will finish below where we were last season?
like Sanchez did?

we plan to progress but I will believe it when I see it - the quality of our football was sadly lacking last year - let's hope it changes

Liverpool look in better shape going into the new season with Van Dijk from the start, Fabinho, Keita and whoever else added to a team playing in a coherent system

Ok I’ve ignored this thread but it’s not going away so I’ll bite so we do NOT need to sign Griezmann because he’d be a luxury signing and another attempt to fit a player into a certain position that is far from their best position.

He’s not played on a wing for at least two years and not regularly for much longer, he’s very much now a support striker or a 10 and going forward I don’t think we’ll be playing with such a formation based on the signing of Fred.

We need a right sided attacker like Bale or Mahrez or Costa or Bailey instead of another 10 being shunted out wide to fit into the team, we’re not a fluid team so playing Lukaku-Griezmann-Sanchez may work on FIFA or Football Manager but not in such a static team such as ours.

This guy!
Why not just say nothing the whole time, rather than this pathetic whinery.

If he ends up staying where he is, the whole scenario will just be a what the absolute feck.

He is a bit of twat. Just repeating he's not gonna make a decision over and over again. I dont know how he can decide to stay there after all this.

Exactly this.
If he eventually comes out and says he's staying it'll be ridiculous, and a case of why on earth did you even make this such a thing! Stay where you are shut up.

Did he actually come out and say he would announce his future today? Or was somebody speculating knowing he had a press conference today?
Either way, if he ends up with us, I don't care about his antics at all

Some journalists speculated, others on twitter just acted as if he was holding a press conference.

We're almost reaching the peak now, as we've gone from "there's zero in this", to starting to make a compelling case for coming here...

Barcelona are stacked with quality attackers
We need him, and came very close last year
He wouldn't surely cause all this fuss if he's staying put, as he could have said that at any time
His club on the verge of a huge signing, that him saying he's going could compromise.
The reddit guy

I hope it happens, as I sent a mail to colleagues at work about 3 weeks ago saying put some money on it..and they laughed it out of court.

And erm..for the benefits he'd bring on the pitch of course!

I wouldn't be surprised if they booed him every game nor would I blame them.

Rio, Rooney, Ramos, Ronaldo... People do this all the time to get bigger salary..

Thought that was Arsenal? They made a 100m EUR bid on deadline day

It got rejected and Sanchez stayed.

Atletico have signed Lemar by the looks of it. If I remember right they wanted to do that deal last summer when we were close to signing Griezmann, didn't they?
they had a transfer ban last summer

This is looking more and more like Lebron James’s incredibly narcissistic move to Miami a few years ago.

Will we get a TV special on Griezmann’s ‘Decision’? I do hope so...

‘So, this season I’ll be taking my talents to South...of the ship canal!’.

We’d be crazy to turn him down, though, as he’s a world-class footballer.

Some journalists speculated, others on twitter just acted as if he was holding a press conference.

He must have said something, as he opened the press conference today by saying he knew everyone thought he was going to be making a decision today but he wouldn’t be.

I’m surprised more people haven’t picked up on that.

He can't stay after all this. Atletico fans will intensify in their booing next season. He will go to Barcelona.

There is nothing to pick up, he has been asked about it every single time in the last months, he knows exactly that the question will be asked, also some papers wrote articles about a potential announce.

Here is Ball-bag's view, in case anyone was curious:

“Barcelona think they have convinced him but Atletico Madrid believe they have as well.

“No one knows what his decision is, if he doesn’t go to Barcelona I would say it’s a little bit of a crisis. He is the player that I’m sure has been promised to manager Ernesto Valverde".

“If he stays, not only will Atletico have to make him one of the top four highest-paid players in the world, they will have to invest €100m in the team, with big names due to arrive.

“Either way, Antoine Griezmann will win as he will be at a top team.

“But it is surprising that he is leaving a bad taste in the mouth by his handling of the situation.

“He promised everything would be sorted before the World Cup, that’s looks like that’s not going to be the case.

“He did it the previous summer where he wanted to go to Manchester United, everything was agreed, decided to stay, so we’re going to have to wait for his decision.”

^^ Whilst I despise Guillem, the above probably makes sense. And I do agree Griezmann is a bit of a knob here.

Why are people pissed off? He’s not hurting United. The only link we have is some guy on reddit. He may very well be apart of a large team that worked on the Koehler deal and would have some insight, but do you really expect someone from Uniteds side telling people we’re signing Griezmann during a sleeve sponsor meeting?

As usual Ballbag saying everything and nothing. Anyone could speculate like that, and probably everyone has, but this fraud seems to make a living out of knowing feck all.

Yeah he's a bit of a pro at that. He seems to suggest we aren't involved whatsoever for this window, which I guess is semi-obvious too.

Also Griezmann said that he hopes it will be fixed before the WC, he didn't promise.

He has agreed to go to Barca.
He's agreed to nothing yet.

From what I understand, he obviously doesn't feel comfortable leaving Atletico in the lurch so he wants to wait for the Lemar transfer to be finalised before he says where he's heading.

I'm still holding out for that to be us! Keep the faith guys.

There is honestly no reason he would choose Barcelona over us.

Griezmann has been talking about announcing his decision though. He opened today’s press conference by apologising and saying he knows lots of people are waiting. He’s clearly been waiting on the Lemar deal being confirmed and expected it to have happened today.

Why does he have to announce anything? Why does he keep saying he will? Just shut the feck up and if you’re transferred then the buying club will announce it. If you’re not going anywhere then there’s nothing to say.

Maybe he was asked the question initially? God knows.

No, he hasn't talked about announcing it, he talked about it being hopefully fixed before the WC. And he didn't apologize, he politely told them that they wouldn't get what they want today, also there is a reason why questions in spanish weren't allowed because the press officer knew that reporters would push transfer talks again. The announcement is an invention from the press.

We haven't played with that type of player on the right for years so what makes you think that's the plan? A ten who starts on the right gives us extra passing options in the middle and also allows Lukaku to pull out wide to put his crosses into the far post (similar to what Milito did for Eto'o).

Also, why do we need a proper winger on the right? Plenty of teams have done well without width. It seems to be the Man Utd delusion that width is the only way to get results.

Your joking right?

Barcelona are a much better side than us at the moment and he’d be playing with the likes of Messi, Coutinho, Suarez etc.

Plus he’d be living in a climate he’s used too rather than Manchesters rainy weather.

We’d probably offer him a higher salary and make him the face of the club but on the pitch Barca are a far more attractive proposition.

None of the names I said are PROPER wingers as they’re left footers on the right but we’ve played for a while with 10’s or support forwards on the right and it’s hurt us going forward because we don’t have fluidity, we need a proper left back and a proper right sided attacker.

I thought Lemar was more of an inverted winger like Martial while Griezmann is a second striker or No. 10. Why would Griezmann be waiting on a player who plays an entirely different position?

This makes a lot of sense. If you stay because of a transfer ban, then of course you would wait for your club to sign someone post-ban before leaving. Whether or not he comes to United thereafter is a different story.

By proper wingers I meant those that kept the width. I don't see how it's hurt us going forward. It gives us that extra man in midfield to allow us to get a man free on the ball and also allows Lukaku to pull out wide into the space left by the false winger and so so utilise his crossing ability. All of that would seem to make us a lot more fluid than someone who rigidly keeps the width.
