In a hypothetical scenario, would everyone prefer Griezmann, and continue to play a 4-2-3-1, or signing a right sided top class central midfielder (Koke, Saul, whoever you want within reach) to play Pogba at his best in a looser role in a three man midfield?
With Mourinho, Griezmann. Every team that he built played 4-2-3-1 and I think that Griezmann would be perfect for that role (hard worker, scores a ton of goals, fools defenses with ease etc).

With some other manager (Pep, I am looking at you) then a good right sided central midfielder to complement Pogba in a 4-3-3.

Griezmann up-front on his own in rotation with Rashford and Pogba in a 3MM.

Griezmann would be perfect because he is capable of playing in a 433 too. Not as well as when he is a 10 of course, but if we have him, then we can do a 4231 with martial, griezmann and mkhitaryan behind ibra/rashford. Pogba would be box to box and someone would hold. In a 433, griezmann, martial flank Ibra, while Mkhitaryan drops deeper to form a 3 man midfield with pogba in front of one holding (like how Peps ciyy is doing with de bruyne and Silva. Mkhitaryan has played deeper before so being more central could work for him, though of course, pogbas role would still be box to box as that is what he is best at. He isnt a pure 10 and I wouldnt want to make him the pure attacking guy. Either formation would work and with griezmann would have potential world class players in all front 5 positions. Martial with his potential (and rashford), ibra, pogba, miki, and then griezmann. Just the perfect signing to complete our attack I think.

Hasn't Mourinho's #10 always been a midfielder with a major offensive threat rather than a forward?

The issue would never be about Griezmann's ability as a number 10/second striker, it's more about possibly limiting Pogba's ability by restricting him to a less lax role.

I'm not so sure Griezmann would work as well a lone striker. His movement and finishing ability are incredible but I feel he needs that man ahead/in conjunction to make the runs off of.

Most of the time, yes. Lampard however was pretty much a second striker for some time.

I really think that Pogba's best position is a box to box player, whatever the formation, so I guess it can work anyway. And well, in difficult matches away from home, we can play 3 in midfield, with Griezmann shifting on the right.

Agree that he shouldn't play as the lone striker.

They are an awkward fit for each other in the same team. Don't think anyone is keen on a 4-3-1-2 anymore.

@Adisa That OP is a mess. If we want to attract him here he needs to know his thread on the CAF is in good shape.

If Atletico Madrid don't get it together maybe they bomb out of Champions League and we get him in the winter window?

My greed is insatiable.

you got your apple tax money yet? we could club together and buy him
Haha I hope we actually take the money even if Apple end up leaving because we could create even more employment in the public sector with that much money. Apple might even stay too!

Boyhood United fan and hasn't made any secret about it.

Him and I think Martial are boyhood United fans, which is weird for me as I've always assumed Zidane or Henry was the idol in France. Cantona and Evra effect?

Fitting Pogba and Griezmann into the French line up was partly why Pogba struggled, no? Not saying I wouldn't want him, but we'd need to make them work together.

Deschamps played both Griezmann and Pogba in roles that didn't really suit them during most of the Euros. Pogba was famously played deeper than usual, almost in a holding role, while Griezmann was played wide right a lot. Of course, Griezmann plays better as a second-striker and Pogba plays better in a less- restricted box-to-box role.
Funnily enough, one of the only times Griezmann played right behind Giroud was when Deschamps made an in-game tactical switch in the second half, where he shifted Griezmann from wide right to the center, and Antoine subsequently scored twice against Ireland in the first 15 minutes of the half.
I'm not saying that happened solely because of that positional alteration, however it's quite clear that it's his best position, and that both him and Pogba were regularly played in roles that were less than optimal for both of them during the tournament. I see no reason why they would get in each other's way if they were played in their correct roles, and it certainly wasn't the reason some of their performances weren't ideal during the Euros.

Griezmann is good. If we want the best, Neymar plays 10-ish for Brazil and is younger, faster, probably stronger, and scores more goals.

Neymar circa 200m that's why. Yes he's a better player but at 400k per week netto the outlay would be 350m which is crazy and no amount of shirts is gonna pay for that deal.

Beckham is the reason for Griezmann. Are you sure Martial grew up as a United fan?

Monaco's president came out and said Martial begged him to accept the move to United, as it was his dream to play here.

Doesn't mean he was a boyhood fan. United is simply a clear step up from playing for Monaco in the French league.

Lots of stories on Griezmann in the press today mentioning Mourinho plans to replace Rooney with him.

He has to be our priority for next summer Griezmann is world class, idolises Beckham, boyhood United fan and can Play RW, CAM and as a striker. We should pay the €100m release clause without hesitation because he is most certainly worth it.

I have wanted him since we played them in the CL in Moyes' first season. Since then his release clause has gone up from €30m at Soceidad to €60m to €80m to €100m at Atletico. Hopefully, now he is at a price that would make Woody proud paying it. Get it done.

Some transfers just feels inevitable, this is one of them.

You have a feeling that this is Rooneys last season with us, and perhaps the same for Mata. We will have a ready made place in the squad for him. Having mkhi griez and martial as a three behind the striker will be downright silly

Chelsea and Spurs made bids for Martial the same summer.
Spurs made a move for him before he signed a new contract, but he decided against them, and not surprisingly given that at the time Monaco were playing in CL quarter finals and Spurs were getting knocked out of Europa league. Chelsea asked to be kept informed about the Martial situation and thought Monaco would only sell summer 2016 (this summer), so they were very disappointed when Martial moved to us within a space of a day and by the time they made a move for him, everything was already sorted out for him to move to us.
My initial point was Martial, I don't believe, has ever said to be a United fan and if Barca/Madrid/Bayern had made a move the same way we had last summer, he would have asked the same from the Monaco president.

Maybe he did say it just to get out of Monaco, maybe he really meant it. All speculation now. Tbf, who knew Griez was a United fan when he had Zidane and all those French Arsenal legends to idolize.

He loves the club, great friends with Pogba, getting fed up at Atletico, huge buy out clause that Woody is itching to smash out the air like a blue bottle fly.

This is officially red cafe's transfer thread of the summer!

Griezmann has come on record saying how Beckham was his idol and when United played Sociedad, he got one of United shirts and he posed on some paper with the United shirt on. So I'd say very different cases.

Where did you get the bold bit from?

Where did you get the bold bit from?
Just the way he moaned about their poor start to the season, saying if it carries on they will be relegated. Probably just talking in a bad mood after a poor result, but it's still a good sign for us.

Griezmann and maybe Dybala are the only potentially available marquee names in 2017 I think and we know Woody and the sponsors love those buys, but we'd have to consider if either fit with Pogba and then with whoever we are going to use as the #9 after Ibra, as both like a specific type of #9 to play off.

Nailed on to sign for us next season.
