Is it not obvious already when Zlatan is badly injured and we only have Rashford? No matter the striker we bid for, it's man united - they have the money and are light enough in that department. The only way it would also kill us is if Woodie or Jose came out and said "I only want 'Player X' as my striker, no one else".

Well, that's a bit disheartening.I just can't see the sense in it though. Surely if we've cooled interest in the wake of this transfer ban to look instead at a "no.9" then why were we in for Griezmann if they deem him not to be a no.9? Was he just a possible luxury signing then? And didn't he play for Atletico for most of this season as the fecking striker!? And what about Zlatan's injury which we've known about for months!!?

Not really concerned. The reality is Zlatans injury..happened a long time ago and there is nothing to suggest that 1) Zlatan won't recover and 2) won't return. With Rooney potentially leaving, I think there's a lot of posturing to get the best prices. We wouldn't be hearing about it now. Maybe they will let us pay in installments if we pretend to cool off. Then clubs maybe won't know how much Athletico could spend. We just have to wait. Rooneys future is key also. Ideally do we ship out before or after we bring players in? Do we take the risk of selling first? We could end up short but if clubs know our position then they will be footdragging to get the best price.
Also got to consider if Atletico are playing hardball on structure of deal - if they are looking for significant fee upfront, that will be a factor

We played with two strikers under Sir Alex.
Currently, we have Martial, Rashford, Mkhitaryan, Mata, Rooney and Lingard competing for 9 and 10, which is the same as what we had under Sir Alex. Lets stick to facts.
That said, it's obvious that the list above is not good enough to be challenging for the title, and it's looking likely that a few of these players will leave.
What we we need is to get a striker to replace Ibra and get a top class winger.
Griez isn't and never has been a main striker though, he has had a free role, not ideal when you look up and no one is in the box. In reality, we prob need both to really get back in the consistent scoring, a Striker and a Griesmann.

Our need for a striker is important but it has been over rated this last season.
Think about it. If Mikhi, Mata, Pogba, Lingard and Martial had taken most of their chances this last season, wouldn't many of our conversations today be different? What we need are goalscorers across the pitch, especially in the attacking midfield area and the wings and at least one very high goalscorer who does not necessarily have to be a centre forward. We all know that some of the best goalscorers in the world today are not centre forwards. Ronaldo, Messi, Griezmann, etc.
I am keen on seeing how Jose solves this goalscoring problem because it goes way beyond getting a good centre forward. Even if you buy Lewandowski, what if he breaks his leg before winter? Where will the goals come from? I so wish our attacking players had been more clinical in front of goal last season and I hope what we experienced with them will not continue next season. I think the plan to bring in some big name alternatives can create the kind of competition within the team that will make everyone serious about not blowing away chances.
My guess is to save face. The unpredictable (Zlatan injury) vs the predictable (failed appeal). Fans would be giving it both barrels if they thought/knew we'd wasted time on something that hinged on the extremely unlikely event of Atleticos appeal being overturned.

There was absolutely no need for us to brief the media, How many times have we came out and said we are cooling our interest in a player? there has been plenty of similar cases but I don't remember United ever briefing the media about a potential signing. It's really not how United do business.
