I think Griezmann's a fine player, but after going through this process with Mata and Di Maria... I've learned to temper my expectations. If we get him great... he will improve our attack, this will also weaken Athletico and not strengthen any of our CL competitors. However, the only transfer deal that would make me lose any sleep thinking about it, was if we had a chance at Aubameyang.

Football is a business you don't go in offering the release clause that's the last resort, especially if as reported the player has asked to leave that gives you leverage to get a better deal.
well I agree. But to be honest it seemed like we were quite willing to pay the money based on media reports. His contract is up in 2021 and Atletico don't need to sell him and most likely don't want to. From their own perspective I don't see why they would entertain anything less than the release clause. I am all for negotiation, but I would be genuinely shocked if in this market Atletico accepted less than 100 million euros for greizmann especially when we spent even more last year on a midfielder.
Maybe he meant from an Atleti perspective, as in it would be hard on them.

We're more likely to win the Premier League than Atletico are to win the La Liga. Admittedly they have a higher chance of winning the CL at this point in time, but there were signs this year that Atletico are perhaps starting to slide whereas we, at least in theory, should be on the way up.
Agree with this. They've done an excellent job over the last decade or so, especially in the goalkeeper and striker positions.
