What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

Which countries end tonight, could we still buy from them?

Surely need at least 2 more...

We can buy from any country tomorrow... But Spain Germany Italy and others all close their windows today. So they can't get on any new players tomorrow which will make it harder for us to sign players from those countries.

Still not talking about "better", because we don't know which one of them will be better. And at this point, Meyer is certainly not worse than Martial and way more proven at an equally high level. By the way, Martial will be 20 soon, too. So, what's the point. 3 months to desperately prove a point?

You overpaid massively on deadline day to get a hot but unproven european prospect and just pray he will become good enough to justify the money. No problem with the revenue you have, but don't try to justify it by inventing a story like he was "the hottest teenager in the world".

A lot of the players you posted will be a year older in September.

Still don't see what's wrong about saying hottest teenager in football, it's not far off the mark even if it is wrong. Not bothered about the fee tbh, our net spend this summer is still like -£6/8M this summer, we had money to spend and he's still a player with huge potential.

In one tweet, it says about the ins and outs today: huge downgrade in quality and experience...

Cant agree more if you ask me..

Also, some report also reveals that this A Martial is a liverpool fan.

Really!?

Who cares?

Solskjaer was also a liverpool fan before he joined United.

Come on man. He rarely got mentioned here and just because suddenly someone throws a shitload of money on him he doesn't suddenly become the "hottest teenager in the world". He wasn't even near that, and you know it. Before this move he was, regarding popularity and recognition, on the same level as someone like Embolo or Timo Werner. There was no bidding war this summer, some clubs like Tottenham were sniffing around (Barca and Chelsea? When?) and now on the last day someone throw cash at him.

He didn't even have a thread on this forum before today.
He's a massive gamble, you can afford the gamble, but don't try to persuade yourself he is like a young Cristiano and you wanted him all summer.
All of this is true. But now he's signed for us, he's is the best youth prospect of the world. Come into his first bad appearance for us, half of this forum would be cursing Woodward for signing Obertan mk 2

I don't see how we can put a positive on today? Martial looks a quality youngster but he's unproven. I don't care what we've paid for him. We've over paid but that's not the issue. To my mind we've significantly weakened our squad today.

Totally agree.

Big day tomorrow, 2 more, or for me it's game over.

Which realistic targets were possible to get ?

Higuain (remember many here immediately dismissed that idea)
Cavani (age and a major salary)
Kane ( mixed, but the general sentiment was that he should get more experience)
Benzema ( Perez's favourite and no chance to sign).
Lewandowski ( No chance of signing two players from Bayern in one window).
Bale ( No chance as it seems apparent that Perez wants him to succeed).

So which world class striker were actually available if we talk about signing a proven striker? If there isnt one available, how then can you ask for 2 ? Quite a standard to have.

Think with his pace and ability on the ball he'll have a huge impact for us. We just need to not expect too much right from the off, but I think he'll turn into a great player for us. Hopefully.

But that is exactly the type of attacker we needed to sign this summer.

So I'm guessing you're working on the assumption that Martial will be useless?

No. I'm working on the fact we have got rid of 5 players and replaced with 2.

If Rooney gets injured, who plays up front? Martial? Come on.

The Zlatan??.. Could have done a decent job. Better than Rooney's current form I suppose.

Cool, thanks for the info, so maybe some savings but not huge.

Certainly demonstrates that he wasn't first choice.
Doubt he was first choice, yeah, though earlier in the summer Monaco were saying he wasn't for sale at all and some have said that it's only falling out of europe that's changed their minds. Other rumours we wanted to wait but had our hand forced by Barca interest...who knows really. Main consensus among sane people that have watched him is that we're paying too much at £36m, but that he has the talent to make good on it and more. Just a bit risky.

Alexander lacazette would have been a good option for a similar price and he had a stellar season last year scoring 31 goals while also being young ( 24 years old ) that also would have been a good option

Well might have helped not getting rid of useful players if we have nothing lined up.

I'd be shocked not to 2 come in.

What would've been perfect is if we could've done a deal like when we loaned Larsson. Rooney + experienced specialist 9 + talented teenager would've probably been enough for this season.

No so sure. Squad is thin, remember DDG was huge reason for top 4.
Our defence is a lot stronger now though, and Navas is a brilliant shot stopper at least. Our defence and midfield improved a lot, and our attack is looking arguably just as shit as before, only now we have a lot more pace to choose from with Memphis and Martial, but much less proven with them being promising youngsters compared to old/past it crocks who could barely kick a ball last season.

The biggest loss is De Gea of course, but I think overall we strengthened well. 1 more player like Griezmann would be perfect for us I think and would give us what we need and a very strong team all around the pitch and plenty of depth. Without that, we're short on depth in the attacking areas and still use Mata on the right (unless Martial will play there).

But would he be able to carry us through at 34 in the Premier League ? Yes Zlatan is quality and can bully defenders, but he would be on a major salary and would be a gamble.

a 34 year old Ibra is still twice the player a 29 year old Rooney is and will ever be. Despite this his salary will still almost certainly be less than that of Shrek's.

So he comes on after 60 mins against Liverpool, score a hat trick, becomes an over night legend, and the doom and gloom merchants will say' It was only Liverpool', 'can't judge him on one game', 'but what about Adnan', 'he is pretty raw'.

Lacazette would have been an option but he hasnt hit the ground running yet after 4 games this season ( zero goals) and feel like he has to do a Kane season to definitely establish himself.

I think we are weaker than last year. Midfield is solid, attack is no existent, defence is average and keeper is worse.

Still a day to change that though and a top quality addition or 2 is now essential.

Makes sense but he hasn't had much different of a start to that of Martial. Nonetheless I do feel there were other options earlier on in the market like Jackson Martinez for example.
