What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

It is exciting to have a young upcoming talent but just worried about whether or not he'll fulfil that potential. If the fee wasn't so ridiculous we could relax a bit but as it is - huge pressure on the lad and lots of anxiety for us fans if he doesn't start firing sooner rather than later.
Well said there! It beggars belief how this simple assessment is not being understood by some on here

I can't believe 85 people believe that this is a 'brilliant buy'.

Nobody knew who he fecking was until this morning. The fee (even the conservative version of what is being reported) isn't even close to being in any way sane. It seems that we're paying a fee that would normally buy a world class proven player for some kid who has less experience than many of our own kids who we ship out on loan (e.g. Januzaj). It's fecking madness.
The only way I knew him was because of FM, Real Madrid bought him and he became their top player. Nuff for me

The whole point of buying young players is that you spend less money on them because to mitigate for the chances of them not developing as expected. Spending this much on a prospect is ludicrous tbh. Obviously I'm excited to see him play though.

So what is the alternaitve? Overpaying for another youngster? Not buying anyone? keeping Chicharito? Trying for Müller?

I dont udnerstand. Yes pressure, but if he has a good season, good luck competing with the creme de la creme next season for him. OPn top of that we are desperate and dont have targets/choices.

It is either pay the feckig money or not. So Martial for this price or not. Thats what i meant. I dont doubt that people like him and would take him for 20m, but the price is higher. I take it how it is.
You still missed the main point here! the price tag will generate expectation and pressure. If he's £20m he would still be expected to deliver instantly but with this price tag now, it's hugely unfair to him, to his future team mates, to the club (which is spending too much for an unknown who never experienced something too major), and unfair to fans having to speculate and being nervous what's wrong with our club transfer policy and what it had become. It's like a circus!

If you think signing anything is better than not signing, you again missed the point. The season is starting with some unknown set of our clubs direction, whether it's aiming for top 4, 2nd, or 3rd... Additional players need to be a boost, not another unknown! If we are spending £32m for a player at this point in time, I would rather go for a 30 year old forward who's proven and been there done that (who can also uses his experience to help our own players who's still trying to know what they can so to help the team).

It will also generate fear on teams playing us. Even that hypothetical player is not going to score loads, the pressure is less and benefit is more (value for money) compared to an unknown at this stage of near the close of window. It wouldn't be too far off when we can say the signing was not really a well thought plan and there will be more a problem when it comes to gelling the team.

Obertan was the new Henry.

I hope this Martial fella can reach those heights or close to but he's got a lot of pressure on his shoulders and he's going to have to cope with meeting expectations while also continuing his development. He's 19. Depay is 21. They're new to this league and need time. Depay is ahead of him age and experience wise but he's finding the Prem difficult. Are we really having to rely on two new youngsters to carry the burden? Rooney, Mata, Fellaini and whoever goes into that 10 will have to shoulder the responsibility far more than they currently are.

Was he?

Not many will agree with you. Although i agree with the added pressure and the club doing things the wrong way. We loaned Falcao, was shit. You automatically assume that he will fail and cant cope with the pressure.

He was very highly thought of definitely. Actually his early appearances for United were encouraging

Obertan's early appearances for the club were shit and he has always been shit. He and Bellion were just terrible wingers for us.

He was thought highly of when he was young but his career had taken a turn for the worst before we signed him. He was closer in status to Hatem Ben Arfa than he was to Benzema.

An 'unfulfilled talent who might come good' rather than a nailed on star.

Is Martial an out and out striker? Looking at one of those scout videos with incredibly annoying music, he seemed to attack from the left wing.

The money involved in football now a days is ridiculous in my opinion and I'm not just talking about this transfer. Nonetheless 36M for a 19 year old who has only played 50 games of top flight football if I'm not mistaken and scored 9 goals in Ligue 1 is absurd. There's no doubting Anthony Martials talent but that kind of money makes no sense and the pressure on the young lad now will be immense. He is not going to be Uniteds goal scorer at leat not anytime soon and in my opinion he should have stayed in France to continue his development I have no doubt that he would benefit from that. If united wanted to give a chance to a 19 year old young and talented forward why not use one that's in there ranks already in James Wilson who seems to be a talented player ( I enjoyed seeing him in his league debut where he scored 2 goals) along with being English . This is of course just my opinion on the matter but one thing I don't think anyone can doubt is that the money and fees payed for players now Is ridiculous .

£36M is a lot of money, but I'm excited. This guy is quite possibly the hottest teenager in world football and we're signing him. What's the problem?

Chelsea and Barca wanted him, we're going to get him before the vultures round next summer.

Really? The general theme of comments coming out of France were incredulity about him getting a move to United. Blanc actually came out and mentioned how mentally weak he was.

Irish Red has it right. He was extremely raw but there was something exciting with his dribbling and skill. Blanc predicted his future spot on.

I think that crown belongs to Hachim Mastour but I think you meant teenagers playing first team football

I think that is a good assessment we moved a season early when we could and got it done

He may be a talented player but how we can expect a 19yr old to come in make an immediate impact on our team? He will need 3-4 years to reach a high level.

We have a young talented team but we won't winning the league or even challenging for at least 2-3 years which is a shame.

Giggs must be rubbing his hands at the prospect of taking over in a couple of years though

Agree with every word said there 100% If the club wants to sign someone just to generate buzz, and with a desirable effect that teams playing us will think twice we are an push-over nowadays. But to sign an unknown with this fee what signal is it going to give?

Apart from the "potential" he can become the next CR7 or Bale (Any potential with lesser fee can do that) what goal is going to be had? I wonder what our players think of this signing but we will never find out because everyone will be toeing the line.

Even signing back Evra or RvP is a better option in my opinion haha

Well City will be expecting the same from a similarly aged player in Raheem Sterling.

I'd love to know how many people that haven't answered 'who?' on that poll have actually seen anything more of this guy than a Scout Nation video and a few stats on his Wiki page.

Why do people care so much about transfer fees? Honestly I've never understood it. It's not like we are being asked to chip in.

All that matters is that we are bringing in a much needed option in our attack. I've never seen him play but I'm looking forward to doing so. If we are spending a chunk of money on a young player then the club obviously believe he has something about him.

Great news. Stop whinging
Well given the money most of us spend on merchandise, going to games, paying for tv packages etc. we kind of are chipping in, so yea people are entitled to have an opinion on the signing of a 19 yr old for $36 million given the young players that have been sold / dropped from the starting 11 in recent times.
