If you think signing anything is better than not signing, you again missed the point. The season is starting with some unknown set of our clubs direction, whether it's aiming for top 4, 2nd, or 3rd... Additional players need to be a boost, not another unknown! If we are spending £32m for a player at this point in time, I would rather go for a 30 year old forward who's proven and been there done that (who can also uses his experience to help our own players who's still trying to know what they can so to help the team).
It will also generate fear on teams playing us. Even that hypothetical player is not going to score loads, the pressure is less and benefit is more (value for money) compared to an unknown at this stage of near the close of window. It wouldn't be too far off when we can say the signing was not really a well thought plan and this is more a problem when it comes to gelling the team.
