What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

The way people go on about transfer fees...! Strewth.

Would people prefer to get somebody who's only 80% of the player, but for half the price? Maybe Mane for £20m? Of course not.

United need to buy footballers who are good enough for where we want to be. That means that there are only a handful of players in the world that we should be targetting. If paying huge fees is what it takes, so be it.
Basically this. I don't see why fans care so much about how much we pay. Maybe at other clubs where they don't have a big budget, but United can basically spend what they like. It's not like it's only Martial or somebody else, we can get Martial and still bring in another few big signings if we wanted to.

To paraphrase Jonathan Wilson's recent tweet, why quibble over a couple of million for Pedro, and then pay £36M for Martial. No panic buys, eh Louis?

He was obviously not convinced he is what we need, which several journalists reported.

Who cares about the price? Expect to see these kinds of prices become even more common in the next two or three years as the premier league becomes saturated with even more money. I'm just excited to see this guy play.

This year has been crazy with big money going all over the place, not to forget the new tv deal starts next year not now. Add to that the "change" in FFP and it's not hard to figure out where this is going.

Complain as much as you like about us overspending, this is what any half decent player will be costing next season.
I'd rather pay 50m for somebody with potential than not sign anybody for our lacking attack.

FFS it's money our club has earned. I spend my money how I like, why shouldn't our club?

People should focus less on the fee and more on the fact that we are signing one of the best prospects around.

It might not solve many problems for the immediate future, but it might. Calling him the next bebe and complaining about the fee seem pretty daft to me.

I don't know the player but I would be happy with the transfer,he could cost 80 after Euro.If United don't pay someone else will do it soon, top clubs are desperate for new talents

I finally understand why English papers always write the most ridiculous prices and stories.

Because people actually believe it. Look at people in here, some journalists were simply saying that we are signing Martial for 80m and they treat it like gospel.

Give it a few months and it'll be £80m

Pedro himself said United and City were interested. There are quotes from him.

His agent even said we 'fell asleep' in negotiations.

But people still want to believe we were never in for him.

I think peoples issue with the price is totally fair

It’s a huge sum for a totally unproven talent. Many thought Liverpool overpaid a lot for Firminio, who has 4 seasons in Germany and 10 Brazilian caps. Well our new lad is nearly £10m dearer.

And it’s even more crazy when we know the club either decided against or fecked up the Pedro deal for half the fee

Its an unbelievable risk the club are taking. But I’m still excited to see what he can do. He kindve has to deliver for LVG/Woodys sake

I'm confused with all the changes in thread titles, how about keep them serious for once?

Good post.

I hope the rumour that Mendes helped us sign him and asked us to let De Gea go are not true. If they are, I'm going to melt down and declare that we've been made Mendes' bitch once again.

It would be the same amount of zero's if we got him for a reasonable fee. Just saying. ;)

We paid what we had to, to bring him in. We've scouted him and he's for the present and the future. Prices are only going up sadly - so we're taking a punt and that's fine providing we're signing other players.

what worryes me is i must have seen him play a few times last season as i watched some monaco games and i can't say i noticed him in the slightest... or even new he existed.

The price whatever it is probably includes add ons and performance/trophy related numbers. tbh I'm not bothered. We need a quality striker. I think we did not pursue Pedro to finality because of his age. We had issues with van Persie and Falcao...

I've no doubt Martial was on a list of prospects that Van Gaal had assembled, how far down at this point is a moot point.

His agent even said we 'fell asleep' in negotiations.

But people still want to believe we were never in for him.

We were clearly delaying because we (naively) thought we could get one of the bigger targets we were aiming for.

Oh, so it's still your money although you exchanged it against tickets and merchandise?

Off topic and do not want to prolong it, but what happens if there are no fans to watch the match at the stadium? I don't care about the money in this case as we needed to do the deal at any cost. But saying it's not your money is being ignorant as the club exists because of the fans and how time and money the fans invest in to the club. Overtime with a lot of expensive buys + plus no output on the filed helps in increasing the cost of the ticket and who bears the extra cost of the ticket?

This is true. The club is nothing without the fans purchasing tickets & merchandise. We ARE Manchester United, so in a sense you have a perfectly fine reason to care about what we spend money & how much on.

I think this will be a good signing for us.

7 years from now Utd will be selling Martial to Real for 150m and Wenger will say I spotted him first and was very close to signing him

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning the lads talent. I just think its absolutely insane money, and stinks of panic buying at the last minute.
why?

LVG has already indicated we have been watching him for a year. Indications are someone else was making a move for him, similar to Depay. So we got him.

People just going on about panic buying, when Monaco still had a chance of CL so probably would not have sold.
