What do think of the (supposedly) imminent signing of Anthony Martial?

Huge pressure on his shoulders then.

Should've brought him in before he signed his contract for half the price.

He went for 5 million euros just 2 years ago.

Let that sink in.

Judging from the videos and not having really seen him play my first thought is that he basically looks like a slightly better version of Welbeck. Pace, strength good dribbling ability but altimately more of a wide forward rather then an out and out goal scorer.

Well yeah, since we've been monitoring him for years you'd have thought we'd have bought him before he signed a new contract. I suspect he was way down on our list of attackers.

He was 17 two years ago... Now he is 19, turning 20, and is one of the highest rated u21 players around. Maybe the highest. Chelsea and Barca both apparently bid 40m for him and were rejected saying he's not leaving at any price.

I finally understand why English papers always write the most ridiculous prices and stories.

Because people actually believe it. Look at people in here, some journalists were simply saying that we are signing Martial for 80m and they treat it like gospel.

Although I've been somewhat pessimistic about this buy the last time we paid big money for a relatively unknown forward from a foreign league he didn't turn out too bad. He now wears number 9 for Real Madrid. I'll be all kinds of ecstatic if he ends up anywhere near that.

And somehow in those 2 years he did enough to be worth £36m. That's more than Alexis Sanchez.

More then Hazard, Sanchez and Pedro. Potentially more then Ozil too.

Its insane money.

This.

Looks like a panic buy. Hopefully it comes off. But I'm not impressed by how we've played this transfer window, the DDG debacle to top it off.

Why the feck are people bringing up his past stats and how much he went for a few years ago? The kid is 19 years old, do people expect him to be scoring 30 goals a season when he was 18 in his first season of professional football basically? The price of players goes up the most in their first few years because they go from young, unproven players to world class talents to world class players in the space of a few years.

If he turns into as good as what many people say he can be, and what we clearly think he can be, then nobody will give a feck about the price and he'll be worth even more then that. That's all there is to it. Would people on here complain if we had bought Aguero a year or 2 before City did for 30m? Yeah right. Same with Hazard. If he fulfills his potential, he'll be comfortably worth more then we are paying now.

No need to resort to abuse!!!! There is something called smart buying and if you're convinced this is a smart buying then it's your opinion. It's not mine.

I am not judging this player per se, but to be paying this fee for a potential hoping he would be saving/improving our attacking is a dire action with no well thought plan!!! LvG had the whole summer to consider our options but unfortunately these plan to buy potential on the last days before close of window cast doubt in our minds.

If you can't accept some civil and reasonable discussion, then you shouldn't be on the forum.

totally agree.
If he doesn't come in and start smashing it from day 1 (not his fault), then we've massively overpaid for a 'potential' talent yet again.

People keep saying this as if Monaco was waiting with open arms just for a club to come and make a bid. Is it so difficult to understand that maybe Monaco just didn't want to sell? Perhaps they thought they had a chance to progress in the champions league and needed their promising youngster? I think it is completely reasonable that once it was clear they wouldn't qualify for the CL that they lost some bargaining power with the player.

It is like saying saying we should have bought Bale, Henry, Rooney, Ferdinand back when they were "unknowns" and costing pittance. But then you have fans who will moan why we are going after unknowns instead of established players.

When he was 16...

How much would Harry Kane have sold for at 16? £10k? Or Bale, or Ronaldo or any player for that matter.

People on here defending this signing lost sight of the fact that from now on Anthony Martial, a 19 year old is now going to be nervously trying to adopt new clubs, new team mates, new living environment and has to score so as not to disappoint. Why is this signing at this stage a good signing indeed? if LvG has wanted him long before, like you said why wait till he becomes more expensive? We really have lacked planning have we!

If the redcafe meltdown thread doesnt get some nice bumps today, i dont know. Hilarious some tweets. The United is a shambles and anti-Martial brigade is truly out today.

oh someone just deleted my factual post re: he signed a new contract at the end of June when we've supposedly wanted him all summer  blimey

You have no soul if this signing doesn't excite you as a United fan. The fact that the fee is so crazy and none of us really have much of a clue about him just makes it more exciting in my opinion. Just hope the lad can handle the pessure and scrutiny that is bound to come with it.

no - not anti-Martial. The deludeness of some people that think this sort of signing is what we need (at this point) and let's not even get into the price....

3 years ago Kevin De Bruyne cost £7million. Whats your point?
Fecking De Bruyne was nothing more then a pretty good player a year ago, and now City buy him for 55m and suddenly it's a great deal for them because he's a great player and they don't care about money? Well we don't give a feck about money either, and Martial has the potential to be one of the best around. It's like the press and many fans on here can't wait to suck City's dick and praise them while find any way to put us down.

He's one of the best youngsters around. We want him, we have more then enough money, so we got him. Who gives a feck how much exactly we paid for him? If he fulfills his potential, he'll be more then worth it. That's all that matters. With our financial strength, we shouldn't be getting priced out of deals like we were for Hazard and Lucas.

Isn't it almost as much as Aguero too?

Martial is going to be our 3rd most expensive signing after Di Maria and Mata

Potentially more, Aguero was £38 million.

Why did this lad leave Lyon anyway?

This is scary. £36mil for a relative unknown. It really does stink of desperation.

Especially as we are selling possibly the world best goal keeper for less.
Why would this be so difficult for some on here to understand? They even resorted to name calling when we were asking questions instead of cheering over the signing! Some terrible fans on here

Hippies.

It is exciting to have a young upcoming talent but just worried about whether or not he'll fulfil that potential. If the fee wasn't so ridiculous we could relax a bit but as it is - huge pressure on the lad and lots of anxiety for us fans if he doesn't start firing sooner rather than later.

Why did we wait so long? We should have signed him when he was 3-years old. What a lack of foresight!

Because Lyon don't have any money, and particularly at that time. They needed to sell a player before the end of the fiscal year.
