Martial's attitude was terrible last night, no denying it. He couldn't have been more disrespectful even if he'd twatted the ball at Mourinho's face, laughed and flicked him the wanker sign.

That said, I'm not sure how we expect a young and - by some accounts - not especially bright lad to react. The number thing seems trivial to us, but Martial isn't the first footballer to get annoyed about it so it must be a big issue to the players. Then he gets dropped for the shiny new toy and left on the bench even when said toy is malfunctioning repeatedly.

Look at it this way: had the roles been reversed, how would Sanchez have reacted? Had he been the established player booted out to accommodate a new signing, what would he have done? It's very easy to compare Martial's performance to Sanchez's last night, but one has taken a first-team slot at the other's expense so it's perhaps no surprise he is a lot more energetic on the field.

Hopefully Mourinho and Martial can sort this out, because they've got a lot to offer each other.

So what you are saying is that because there are other players ahead of him in the pecking order (which I agree with), giving up is acceptable?
If it were me, I'd do everything I could to score a hat-trick in each of the pre-season games. I'd make people look up and pay notice. And after each of the hat-tricks I'd tell Jose who "the man" is. I'd also ask Jose to bench Lukaku and put me on instead. Jose loves that sort of confidence. He loves it when players stand and up be counted and show fight. Jose will be beaming ear to ear, if Martial did this.
I remember when Rojo clashed heads and was bleeding from his head. He ripped off his shirt, which was full of blood and wanted to continue playing (which he did). Jose was standing nearby and could not hide the joy he was feeling when he realised that he had a player who would run through brick walls for the cause.
The players who Jose tends not to get on with are those that give up at the first sign of difficulty. And this is what Martial is.
It just isn't in Martial's mentality to show fight, stand up and be counted. He is too laid back for Jose's style of management.
Would you mate? How do you know, have you been in a similar situation in your own workplace or personal life?

It's very easy to say you'd react to unfair demotion by coming back stronger. But having worked in the media industry, which is as cut-throat and arbitrary as they come, I can tell you most people react just like Martial did last night.

So he was a difficult teenager and probably made a few silly mistakes. Cool - so are an incredible amount of people who grow up to be perfectly successful.

Well the second tweet clearly says they knew he would go pro...

Anelka wasn't bad and had a pretty good career. He racked up a lot of money in transfer fees, throughout his career.

Alenka was a good player, never lived up to the hype following his debut season with Arsenal - sounds very familiar. Very much see Martial going the same way.

I do agree with the overall consensus that he wasn’t all that great but also he didn’t have much to fee on other than chasing after long punts in to the channels then having no support around him as midfield was resting on their laurels handling back. There were also a couple of good things he did but it just wasn’t enough. Overall the whole team yesterday was quite rubbish and just didn’t function well together as a unit but that is what they are on pre-season to learn how to do.

He was touted as this generation's theirry henry but with each passing months he looks like this generation's anelka.

I like Martial but Anelka has done a whole lot more than Martial has so far done. It's a weak comparison. If he ends up being comparable to Anelka then I'll be okay with that, I'm hoping for more tho. Martial needs to do a whole lot more, hopefully here. Not looking good tho, fans are turning on him.

Really not fussed about him leaving.

If you are 22, have a great opportunity to showcase your talent and you completely don't give a feck, then you are definitely not Manchester United material.

He'll be another Januzaj, and even he showed more passion in the shirt. Martial's taking 100k a week and pissing on the shirt...

I we must sell him so be it, ideally we sell him to clubs outside of England
Whatever it will be, hope we don't swap Martial for fecking Willian on the last day.

If today's reports are to be believed, why couldn't this have been sorted earlier? He should have clearly laid out his position at the end of last season and given us enough time to source a replacement/find a suitable buyer. At this rate, I can see him going to either Juve or Chelsea and us failing to replace him this window.

It's sad looking back on his first season with us and how bright of a future it seemed he had here. We all thought LVG had (somewhat accidentally) discovered the next bright star for our club. The chances of him fulfilling that future now seem pretty bleak.

Not everyone can be like Rashford. Even he gets accusations about being uncommitted, even tho all accounts are to the contrary. Hopefully it's BS and he's working as hard as everyone else...

Average players worth 60 millions each? Oh do feck off please.

Calm it you little weirdo. Just look at what that Liverpool midfield that reached the semi final or what Sterling did last season.

:nervous: blasphemy, Trizy!

 yup. I wanted and defended Jose up until our CL exit now I'm done. Our team play like strangers and very shite strangers at that. Our transfers have been hit and miss and to top it all off Pogba and Martial want out (if reports are to be believed).

I think Martials talent is undeniable but he is definitely lacking in hunger/desire (or that's how it appears). On top of that the guy wants out and his manager isn't keen on him. It's a no brainer to sell him in that circumstance. In an ideal world I wish we could watch him progress here and see the talented kid become the superstar he should but he's not going to be nurtured appropriately under the current regime.

Sell him for a good profit and invest in a winger I say, with slight disappointment.

Aye, can’t disagree with much there. And the start to this season doesn’t show much cause for hope/optimism.

Let’s hope it’s just a lot of pre season rustiness and we hit the ground running when the season starts.

The rumours of him falling out with Mourinho and wanting out have been around for ages.

At this point I’d swap him for Pjanic

Huh? Why? We don't need another playmaker. We have Pogba, we just signed Fred and also Pereira (who has playmaking qualities) has just returned from loan to provide depth. What would be the point of that swap?

I mean Pjanic would obviously walk into our lineup ahead of any of our midfielders but its a weird thing to say considering one is a world class playmaker and the other is a youngish forward that have nothing to do with each other...

The best teams often have multiple playmakers in them.

Because Juve are rumoured to be open to Pjanic leaving, and Martial has been linked with Juve. Could suit both parties.

Far better for Mourinho to keep him than let him go. If Martial goes to Spain and Italy and does well it'll be a massive black mark against Mou, and supporters are split on him already.

You get the feeling that even if it's resolved now, this will return again each bloody window. Both Martial and Jose don't appear to be the type of people who forgive and forget. I honestly can't see how this one going to play out as not many out there who will be willing to pay the money of 70m+. The only way I think is some kind of exchange where the figures can be manipulated to suit both parties.

The one thing I know is Martial doesn't appear the easiest person to work with when he's happy so god knows what he must be like now. He must be stinking the place out....

Mourinho will probably get himself sacked at some point this season. Problem solved.

I don't understand why United's management not sell him in the beginning of the window and buy a replacement asap. Just imagine the disappointment of Martial not being picked for the NT and France won the WC. He is so determined to leave and restart his career somewhere else.

I am just curious how Martial is valued at 70M. Is it based on his "potential" at age 22 or his output on the field in the past 3 seasons?

We could swap him with Willian or Perisic, players that Mourinho would actually play. His last two performances looks like a player without the desire to perform.

If a player wants to go, and it's noticeable how unbothered he seems in the last two games then sell him.

Pre-season or not, he missed a World Cup where his country won, he gets a chance in his preferred position and has the opportunity to impress the manager - he's fecked it.

We will have to disagree - as I think the comparison with Anelka is spot on. Anelka never hit the heights if his first season at Arsenal, and it doesn’t look like Martial will either. Anelka turned into a journeyman striker who had a good season every now and again to earn himself a new club, he clearly lacked motivation like Martial.

However, you are right in respect that Anelka has achieved more than Martial at the same ages, which unfortunately doesn’t bode well for our no 11 - give it a couple of years he will be at a mid-table PL club (Bolton), or plying his trade in Turkey.

Tbf I'd probably do a double swap of Pogba and Martial for Douglas Costa and Pjanic (and some cash because of the marketability of Pogba/martial and them being a few years younger then both Costa and Pjanic). Pursly player quality though we'd be better off getting both in.
